I can't recall ever seeing a popup on this site, and I'm not a pubclub member. The only ads I've seen are at the end of videos, which doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I love how people get put on suspension for saying that they use addblock. Stay classy Escapist.

The most irritating thing about the popups is that I OWN Dead Space 2 and Dragon Age 2 and have absolutely zero intention of playing Mass Effect 2. They don't really slow down my processor at all, but I'm not gonna try a demo for a game I've already finished... Twice!

The really annoying ones for me are the ones before the videos, but it seems usually I only get a certain number of them per day... Besides, we've had adverts between TV shows for decades. Second, it's not as if it's the Escapist's fault that the marketing departments that pay them to use their advertisements are using moronic, outdated marketing concepts... I've always felt that the best advertising is subtle and unobtrusive anyway, kinda like the borders around the videos, you can ignore it if it doesn't interest you >>

Me neither. I don't remember ever experiencing these pop ups the OT is describing.

I do believe advertisements are annoying in general. But hey, this site has to make money somehow. And not everyone is going to join the Pub Club.

I cannot tell why some people are getting suspended, other just a warning, and others nothing at all, when they are all saying get 'adblockplus'. Honestly, these ads are annoying as hell, if only because I keep accidentally clicking on them(especially that mass effect one, it pretty much invisible when it starts up.)
I don't see why this whole thing is make or beak with some people though. I mean, woopdeedo, you need to press an X everyonce in a while. Frankly, I feel they are a disgrace to gamers. Haven't we done for more tedious crap in our medium for decades? You know what, maybe if we put a badge system regarding the ads, people would be less inclined to complain. 'Exit an ad 30 times' to get a badge. or click on an ad to get a badge. Something like that?

I HATE the new popups. I'm fine with the pre-video ads, I can turn the speakers down if I don't want to hear it. I'm fine with the 'put the video into a new fancy window' ads, even if they're annoying becuase they don't load properly on anything other than the desktop. I'm fine with the banner ads, and I was even fine with the first popups that were just lil' things in the corner. However, I am NOT fine with a screen-filling animated dragon demanding I pay attention to it by covering up the thing I was trying to see in the first place. I really hope these go away FAST, becuase I'm quickly finding myself discouraged from exploring the site for cool articles I'd missed like I have been. I can't read ads if I quit coming to the site, y'know.

What are these popups people are talking about? I've never seen one, and I don't have any kind of adblock, and I'm not in the Publisher's Club.
These ads (see image)

I've had enough of them, they wait just long enough for me to realize the page has loaded before they pop up RIGHT where I'm about to click. Other people have said it so I'll just reiterate; if your product become assotiated with something frustrating and annoying, you're advertising wrong.

Buy PubClub memberships for friends! We have talked about a donate button before, but I'm not sure as to the exact reason why we don't have it. I think you can just buy multiple years on your own account for a lifetime of no ads or worrying about renewals. :) I'll bring it up at our tech meeting tomorrow in case it's not easy to buy multiple years currently.
I haven't seen these pop-ups either and I find it quite strange. Im going to buy Pub Club membership this week anyway but Im cruious why they dont show up. I have no adblockers at all (and I am not endorsing them) and no NoScript plugins or anything like that either. Running Firefox 5.0.

Also out of curiosity how come TheEscapist doesn't seem to run "out of site" banner ads anymore, like for gaming related products or other websites. The only banner ads I see are all for Escapist shows or Pub Club, I'm sure you guys know more about marketing than me but it seems a little odd.

They annoy me but I've come to terms that either way if I want the services of the escapist magazine I am going to have to pay, wether it be with my time and download bandwith, or with 20 bucks to join the pub club, its simply illogical to ask someone to put money time and effort into something without anything in return... I mean would you work for nothing?

Its specifically in the rules not to include, link to or advocate adblockers among racism etc. Its an all encompassing rule to stop discussion about them and its fair enough. If you mention them offhand ie that you dont have them (like Ive said) I presume its fine, but if you say "just get an adblock" then its not and your breaking the rules for obvious reasons.

I understand why you dont like some ads, but as far as Im aware the escapist isnt going to have much control over specifc ads. I presume they will take a contract with specific companies that deal with multiple products and design various ad-types. Saying, "we dont like X ad because of Y" is going to be more trouble than its worth unless its a large scale problem.

Probably region based. If you connected to an american proxy you would probably see them.

On topic: Ads are fine, necessary even, but when the ads are so intrusive that you need to explicitly ban any mention of ad-blocking plugins in your forum rules it is obvious that you are trying to sweep the issue under the rug instead of addressing it.

Oooooh...duh..that makes so much sense now. Suprised I dint think of that. Seems odd that something as general as "Mass Effect 2" would be region based though, maybe its just the legal range of the ad companies, Im not sure.

oh, I know WHY its not allowed to talk about the ad blockers. What I just dont get is why some people are getting suspended whilst others nothing at all when they are both blantanty saying 'get adblock plus'.
And I don't really know what control the Escapist has over these ads, but I'm not complaining about the Escapist. It's the ads themselves. I don't like them because they are intrusive and do often make me accidentally click on them(so job well done I guess?). i just hope it ends soon.
(and why are they advertising DeadSpace 2 and ME? Surely some promo for upcoming titles is in order?)

While it's probably been said, it's no that there are advertisments on the site. The Escapist needs money, so they provide ad space, no biggie.

The problem is when said ads take up half the damn page and, for some low-end computers, drastically slows down everything (which is incredibly ironic considering what Gaikai does) and gets in the way of the content you want to look at. There was a brief time when the ads were changed to smaller ads on the bottom corners, I don't know why they got rid of those. Better than the old/current ones, anyway.

I don't get why The Escapist doesn't dictate some guidelines for their ad space, they have the ad space the marketers so desperately want and most of them use the top ad space or the side banners. Why does Gaikai get this hugeass, disruptive ad?

I had no clue about them either until this thread and I disable the ad blocker that comes standard with Google Chrome when I'm on The Escapist. I went out and tried to get one to pop up and the only luck I had was running Internet Explorer and boy do those damn things bog things down to hell and back. Needless to say I'm thankful they don't show up for whatever reason because if they did I would probably avoid the site completely except a time or two a week to watch the exclusive videos.

I personally believe the ads in question are too obnoxious if you are going to actively solicit your members to disable ad blockers. If people are going to go out of their way to manually disable the ad blockers to support the site, and anymore you do have to actively seek out the option to disable them as they come standard, then I think that the site should do it's part to make sure the ads are as unobtrusive as possible and those giant pop up ads are not only obnoxious but also bog down the entire computer for some folks. And that, in my opinion, is too much.

I'm not in Pub club and don't use (OR ADVOCATE THE USE OF!!!) ad blockers but I've never seen a pop-up.
