Same. I've tried to get into Fallout 3 but it was just so dull and boring. What was round the corner? Another derelict building.BathorysGraveland said:

Elder Scrolls, largely because the Fallout games, while great, are victims of the whole "Gritty Realism = DARK BROWNS EVERYWHERE, ARGH" problem.
That, plus the fact that you can always shoot guns in about 99% of all the other games that come out each year. So going for a bow-and-arrow combo with the occasional dagger stealth kill is a nice change.
What hasn't changed, on the other hand, is the AI, which is still as dumb as a ton of bricks. Oddly enough, it just makes sneaking around all the more entertaining.

As Fallout 3 is my favourite game of all time then I have to say Fallout.
Literally just finished my 10th full playthrough and I am still finding new things. I also still find the characters and settings genuinely fun and interesting. There is also some really good scripting and enviromental storytelling.
Skyrim was good but nowhere near as good as Fallout 3. And yes, I've played the originals and still prefer Fallout 3.

I really like Fallout, but I'm going to have to go with Elder Scrolls. I guess I just love tolight people on fire.
The Elder Scrolls. Reasons:
NOTE: I'm not going to consider Fallout: New Vegas here, since it was made by Obsidian, not Bethesda.
1) Loot, there is much better loot in TES. Most dungeons in Fallout are empty of good loot, it's dull.
2) Better looking world. Fallout 3 is bland, very bland. It's got a sickening green tint and everything is rubble. Skyrim is astonishingly beautiful by comparison.
3) TES has books, some of which are actually pretty cool.
4) I prefer swords and magic to guns.
5) I feel the writing in Fallout 3 was worse, while in Skyrim it was... decent.
Edit: 6) Better leveling system, Fallout goes for the generic XP method, Skyrim's system is unique and makes more sense in game.

I think point 5 is questionable, the leveling system in skyrim was a joke with speachcraft useless, smithing and enchanting broken and there was no unarmed skill any-more.orangeban said:

I like both, but Tamriel is just way more interesting than the Wasteland. That's not to say that Fallout isn't interesting, but it's culturally and visually dead. Other than a few individuals like your father in Fallout 3 and Arcade Gannon in New Vegas, there is no hope, no progress. The entire plot of New Vegas is just the survivors banding together and picking over the remaining scraps of civilization.
When is the last time you met a painter in the Wasteland? A sculptor? A writer other that Moira and her survival guide? The world is culturally dead, with no hope of revival.
Tamriel is a living, breathing world that has a sense of progression. It's also vibrant and much more visually appealing. Also, Skyrim (and to a lesser extent Oblivion) have incredibly well-written lore in books. I love finding a skill book and reading it, seeing how the story relates to the skill and how my character learns from it. Plus, leveling skills by using them makes way more sense than allotting skill points.
On a side note, I find the Mage/Thief/Warrior dynamic of Elder Scrolls games is much more interesting than the Melee/Guns/Stealth? dynamic of Fallout. The latter doesn't allow as much interesting mixing and matching.

This is a very hard question if you count Fallout New Vegas, which is a brilliant game that I spent 100's of hours on. The story was brilliant, the companions rocked and gameplay was fun. Seeing as you said Bethesda fans I don't count New Vegas because it was made by Obsidian and published by Bethesda. This makes the decision easy. To me fallout 3 was complete and utter shit. The story sucked which is one of my favorite things in a game I can look over that like in the Elder Scrolls if they have other brilliant stories and/or make it up in other parts. They didn't so I was very disappointed. Oblivion was my first Elder Scrolls game and I loved it to death. In my eyes it presented never ending opportunities and it had one of my favorite quest lines ever, The Dark Brotherhood. While the main quest wasn't brilliant it was servicable and made up by the guilds, except for fighters guild(aka dungeon hunters guild), tose were brilliant. Then came skyrim which while lacking in story made it up in gameplay. I prefer Skyrim to Oblivion but I had more fun with Oblivion because of 2 reasons, the stories and It was new to me and my first and you never forget a first.

Elder Scrolls, It's always more engaging. in fallout it does nothing to pull you into the story and after trolling around in Megaton or Good springs depending on the game. you loose all interest and quit. Elder scrolls knows that you'll get bored and tries very hard, if not too hard to keep you involved with the story.
