Tried watching the show. Watched the first five episodes, got bored, went back to watching Futurama. I honestly do not understand the appeal. I watched the amount of episodes that people generally agreed was enough to get "hooked", but I never did. It was just kind of bland and samey...

I'm a girl, but considering I've never really been into stereotypical girly stuff, I like to think that I qualify as a brony.
Yeah, as a female fan (since G1 - I've been into MLP since I was 5) I really don't like the term brony as the only term for fans. For the guys it's great (and very cute) but for the girls... I'm no one's bro.

I've tried to get away from the term before (even suggested a few crappy alternatives, but none of them stuck) but I keep getting stuck with it.

So welcome to the herd, sister. ^^
I want to figure out a term for both... I'm plotting right now >.>
It seems to me that the most appropriate gender neutral term would be "MLPeople", or "MLPeeps" or whatever. In return to full use of this wonderful newly minted term, you guys have to keep the talk about ponies down to a dull roar, okay? I get that you like a show, I wasn't grabbed by it, that's just how personal taste is. Some of you take it waaay too seriously, but that's true of any fandom. I don't have an issue with you guys until you just keep on bringing it up over and over and over. Surely there are dedicated forum sites for your show, and you could use those to your heart's content without bothering the rest of us? I don't think that there are many more converts coming, at this stage we're pretty much all either MLPeeps or not. Good fences make good neighbours...

Welcome to the Escapist:
Eight Zero days without a pony thread.

OT: Love the show, though it was a bit embarrassing when dad caught me watching it. :p

*sighs*
not again...
*cocks gun*
What is it with you people and MLP threads?
*takes aim*
I mean, i would be technically qualified as a Brony, for i have seen the show, know all the characters and quite liked it.
However i'm more into it for the community, you should probably join some MLP user groups, for they are some of the most popular on the site.
*steadies rifle*
I'm so sorry- this is the way it has to be.

I have no problem w/people liking it but why do you always have to be so in your face w/it? I'm sure a lot less people would hate it if you were a little bit more mellow and would keep it to yourself even a little bit more.

Everyone would like it if every single fanbase did exactly this. But people don't, and people won't. It's why flame wars exist.

At this point I am only responding because people are still posting. Again, I wanted to throw myself into the brony world. I have, now I am going to be quiet as long as everyone else will stop saying the same thing over and over...

Yeah but Bronies kinda took fandom too a whole new level, the amount of threads posted and avatars changed doesn't even start to compare to other shows. I myself think it's kinda funny and I don't mind it that much but you gotta admit that for non-believers (or haters), it can be hella overwhelming and annoying.

Okay, okay... I finally got around to finding out what the hell is going on around here. Not that it didn't bother me before, but now I guess I just felt un-lazy and decided to check it out. Now, I'm gonna be as delicate as possible in saying this: You need help, sir(s)(and madams, I suppose) I TRIED (emphasizing on 'tried') to watch the first episode and this is by far the corniest, most cheesy, childish thing I've seen since Teletubies(or however the f@#k you spell that) and that thing about a bloke called Spartacus. At first, when I saw the title of the first ep "friendship and magic" I thought it was a parody of some sort, you know, making fun of the whole concept of friendship and stuff, using ponies and all, that would've been cool. 2 minutes in, still holding on to the theory about the parody, but after that whole "prologue" in the beginning, the stunning realization hit me - these guys actually take this SERIOUSLY! And now, don't get me wrong. I am an anime fan, I've watched a lot of animes, and let's be frank, some of them are very... awkward. As in cheesy, childish, outright stupid. But nothing, such as this, can even compare itself in that aspect. I guess, the only way I can explain this phenomenon, and the fact that it actually became a phenomenon in the first place, is that there are too many people who have not had a propper childhood, if you get what I mean. This is just my opinion, so... you guys just wait for the big men in the white coats to arrive and take you to "The Happy Hotel", m'key...?
Yeah, that's the first episode. The entire rest of the series is quite different from the pilot. If you're willing to give it a try with an episode indicative of why we love the series, try Sonic Rainboom. It's at least 20% cooler than any other episode.

The show kind of saved my life, so yes. I'm a brony.
Ok, I just have to ask:
How?
Haha, well, I was in a very, very, VERY deep depression. Was of course contemplating suicide, the sensitive one I am (Over what is not the point). But when I saw the cheeriness of the show... well... it helped. Seeing all the bright colors and silly cast. I just felt... better. I know, I'm stupid for even considering suicide and that I was saved by a kids show, but hey, I'm better now and that's all that matters to me.

I don't get the appeal. I tried watching it, and got half way through before getting bored. The jokes are cliched and repetitive, like every kid's show. Why is it so loved?

That's not rhetorical, I wouldn't mind knowing so that I could maybe give it another go with a different mindset. And if anyone's kind enough to reply, please no 'it's all opinion' replies. I'm not criticising, I'm genuinely trying to see the appeal.
Well, I think you do need to take a different approach at it. When I was watching I wasn't aiming for any gritty jokes or any high brow, I was listening for the fun, child friendly, silly and cliche, but still funny jokes. You don't need to be dumbed down for it, but you do need to look at it for what it is, not expect it to be something else.

I can't vote.

It's not that I think there's something wrong with you people, but I do have a problem with it.

In terms of comedy, it has not redeeming factors. It just plain isn't funny.

It's like skinny jeans to me. An rather annoying fad.
