I've read a lot of comments on these forums about people hating Hip Hop, or Rap. I think there was one thread to do with what music you'd bring your child up on, and people said "not Rap", when I for one would encourage (not force) my child to listen to it. Also, I'm not talking about the Hip Hop you see on TV, I'm talking about songs like this:

<youtube=H9mhfJfVWdY>
<youtube=J4-N3ZT9Zrs>

That's the Hip Hop I know, and I'd like to know out of genuine interest why people say it's bad so much to the extent that they wouldn't allow their child to listen to it.
Because anything good is so far removed from anything a child would access. most hip-hop is all the same dance-rap about how big that girls ass was, or how drunk the singer is/was

and then most rap is even worse. just... ugh.

Also you fail to realise that many of these bands have some beautiful lyrics, try Emperor or Burzum and then come and tell me that their lyrics promote killing.
Before I say this, please understand that I agree with what you said. Now that that's out of the way, I think it's pretty funny that you mention Burzum. Lyrically perhaps you're right (which is the topic here) but Varg is hardly an ideal role model for not killing.
Yeah, I meant lyrically. But then again, bands should be about the music, not the people who make it.

Sorry then, my mistake. I don't think most people would react well to ignorant stereotyping. I reacted so harshly because I get it almost all the time at school and home...
Hip Hop fans get it all the time.
Yes someone once told me that, but I didn't really beleive him because I never heard any of it being around people who 75% of listen to techno, rap and hip hop. Maybe he was right...

I used to have the same feeling about rap and hip-hop, until I was introduced to a group by the name of Atmosphere. Their songs have meaning, unlike mainstream rappers. It opened up a whole new world to me, filled with loads of good things to hear.
Plus, y'know... Frontalot.

Although I prefer MC Chris.

I see your point, old skool was the shit. But what about Lupe Fiasco, Mos Def, Common, Nas and other rappers who actually give a fuck about their lyrically content unlike most rappers today?
You know, you're right; I haven't listened to most of the ones you mentioned, but I like what I've heard from Mos Def. Both the lyrics and the music in general is okay to me. He strikes me as someone who's actually attempting something artistic and musical rather than just trying to get on the radio. The Roots are the same way. I guess in general it's like most popular music today, you have to really look beyond the mainstream and the charts to find the good stuff.

no hip hop and rap ruined FUSE along with pop
And then throw in a "Rad", "Cool" hipster ready to rap about "Christ"
One of Kanye West's first and best songs was one about Jesus. You know, before the fame got to his head and he became an outspoken dick.

AS long as it promotes a positive out look on life but then again I would love it if my child listens to Cannibal Corpse or Slayer both are awesome.

While I hate Hip Hop, I would let them listen to it.
My parents aren't a fan of metal but they don't mind

I'd allow my child to listen to whatever he/she wants to listen to. It's their choice.

People who think that hip hop is just about money/cars/women etc. are ignorant

listen to atmosphere, immortal technique, aesop rock, mf doom, the roots

hip hop is by no means my favorite type of music but i wish people wouldn't just judge it by whats popular/on the radio
Thank you. I was about to type something similar but you saved me the effort
and on that note i leave you all with a quote

"Thou shalt remember that guns, bitches and bling were never part of the four elements and never will be."

you shouldn't put blinders on when looking for something genuinely excellent in any matter, music included. There's some good rap it's just hard to find, but the same could be said for any type of music out there. In fact I'd say that most rap has the potential to be good, just not the rap common for today ( is the new auto tuned stuff still considered gangster rap?) Some rap is good you just have to look for it. A lot of my problem with music is how one note a genre can be, we all know the stigma placed on rap/hip hop, but you could make similar accusations to even the precious metal. By the way those two songs you posted especially the second one were fucking great! Hell even country, which may be even more hated than rap is sometimes good (anyone who saw crazy heart can back me up on that [even if it wasn't your thing [[which it wasn't for me]] you have to recodnize talent when you hear it]) As a final note how the hell have I heard about Ke$ha and never heard of the girl you posted?

EDIT: What the Hell? Nobody told me that there was such a thing as alternative hip hop! This is un-be-lieveable not only is everything new I'm hearing at the very least pretty good, it doesn't have that bullshit 14 year old trying to act tough bravado of mainstream rap, and just about every artist from the past decade that I liked (which were few and far between) could be considered this! Seriously if you don't like rap in it's current form, look at this stuff! I'm shocked! Too many excelmation points.

Yes I would. Because if I didn't that would be hypocritical and I wouldn't want to deprive them from that bit of culture.

This is good! This is the story I hear from a lot of people- they never knew there was anything past the platinum grill, but once they found out there was, loved it. About Dessa, the second link you're talking about, you might not have heard of her because she's still kind of unknown in context, probably because she hasn't really done anything until this year. She had an EP in 2007, plus she's a member of Doomtree (who I really recommend) so she's been on those albums. She's done the odd collaboration with other members on their solo albums, but only released her first solo album in January. The first link is a member of Doomtree too.

On a side note- LMAO at MC Chris. Up until now I thought you were all talking about the little shit that was on that Rock School TV show in the UK a few years ago.

Haha yeah of course. I may be their parent, but I have no right dictating what they can/can't listen to.
