Your name sounds vaguely familiar....

To respond to your comment: Actually, my history classes (at university) rarely asks dates. Only High schools ask dates on a regular basis.
Of course, when you are asked to remember dates in Uni, you better remember them.

OT: No, it most certainly is not a useless subject. Were it not for learning history, so many errors would continue to be made, even though people will not recognize that those same errors have been done in the past. In other words...

Of course, there is the other side of repeating history, as in the part where history repeats all of the greater works of mankind in some form. However, there would be too much of a risk to do so with all of the negative historical moments. While all moments in history will not apply to you, it is still important to learn at least a small amount of them. Is repeating history worth the risk of future tragedies? Personally, I don't think so. You, on the other hand, are free to believe what you want. Just keep what has been said in mind.

Yep, this is pretty much it.
Aww shitfuck, you're right!

How very embarrassing! Either way, my point still stands. I'll just edit the idiocy out of my original post :p

Just because it was useless to me, it dont mean that it's useless to everyone else.

In short, open your fucking mind.
I'm going to be honest here, I can't explain for shit.
Anyway, I understand that it might be useless to me but it doesn't mean it's useless to everyone else, what I don't understand is, if it's useless to me why learn it.

Don't bring up what everyone else already brought up the..."well you're going to be a doctor and you won't know how to deal with this thing because you didn't learn history"
I'm not talking about history as a whole I'm talking about certain things, I plan on learning medical history, I just hate learning about thing I will never use.

Without the knowledge of the events leading up to and around major events those things that led up to the events will happen all over again leading once again to the major event.

I've been thinking about this for a while now.
I don't see a point in History class and all that, yeah its boring, I do all my work in there but seriously, what benefit will it have when I become a doctor?
I've noticed that people either find History very interesting or find it incredibly dull.
History is probably my favorite subject...

I could be way off here, but is it the younger or immature members here saying "history is crap and rboring and I dont see why I should learn it.", and the older or more mature members who understand its importance?

Like I said, I could be way off there but thats what it looks like on paper, and hell when i was at school, I agreed!

But take it from me history is very important, and very interesting.

EDIT: was the poll set up so people would answer the thread title and not the poll question, to make it look like people agree with the OP? Apologies to the OP if this isnt the case.

Is History a useless subject? If not can you explain why?
No, it isn't useless. Why? Because it interest me. Why do I have to take English classes? I speak English. Why did I have to take Trig? When am I ever gonna use that in real life? Or Calculus? Wait... I wanted to take that one... erm... government! Why should I have to take a class to learn about that? I don't give a shit about that and nothing I do can change what they do so meh.

I'll probably understand this more when I get older, its just been bugging me and my teachers never wanted to discuss it with me so I figured, just make a thread.

[HEADING=1]HERESY TO SPEAK SUCH WORDS![/HEADING]

"Those do not know history are doomed to repeat it."

Not only that, it's pretty entertaining. For me.

But have you ever heard the phrase, "History is bound to repeat itself"?

Yeah, well, it's obvious to see how history would help us to at least try to prevent the repeat, if it is a bad repeat. History also helps us develop a different view of the world, and maybe a little insight into the mind of humanity. When I was ten, my view of the world split into two. And did I love my second view.

Also:

[HEADING=1]HISTORY. IS. ENTERTAINING![/HEADING]

Millitary History Channel ftw!

This. I love you. <3

Seriously, OP. I study History in college. History is awesome. Insight to human behavior, understanding the world as we know it today by what has come to shape it in the past--it's all incredibly relevant.

Some teachers do suck at teaching history; sometimes you just have to get the right professor for it to click. (American history always came off as dull to me--until I got to college and had my amazing liberal hippy professor.)

But yeah. Seriously. History is insanely important.

Fair enough, they didnt make me understand that when I was at school either, either that or I just didnt want to listen =P

Nearly everything has some pretext to the past. Its cliche, but those who don't learn history are truly doomed to repeat it. Everything thats happening has happened in some form or another in the past. You can predict the future based solely on past events.

I'll go with 'sorta'.

A) The way it's taught by our current schooling system is bad, so I can forgive you for dropping out, but
B) for any sort of intelligent thinking, history is damn important. If you want to give answers to important questions in life (what are morals? why is there so much hate?) you need to have knowledge of mistakes we made in the past to do so.

How does the "those who don't learn history are doom to repeat it" apply to someone who is going to be a doctor. I will learn medical history but other than that what is there that I could possibly repeat.
Once again, I don't mean history is useless as a whole I mean some is useless for me because I'm going to be a doctor.

Well to take it into your point of view since you want to be a doctor you have to know your history to help your patient. If you don't know how to cure a disease or symptoms simply cause you don't want to look it up on a book which was made by countless doctors in the past and more to perfect the cure. So to think history is pointless HAHA

Now learn your History you Ignorant Dumbass

It's certainly important, but I don't think it should be as extensive as it is.

I mean, in American History, I've been learning about the New Deal for weeks now. That's ridiculous. And everyday it's basically reviewing the basic information from the beginning, and then maybe one or two new bits of information.

how about some new quotes?

David Ben Gurion:
Anyone who believes you can't change history has never tried to write his memoirs.

David C. McCullough:
History is a guide to navigation in perilous times. History is who we are and why we are the way we are.

Etienne Gilson:
History is the only laboratory we have in which to test the consequences of thought.

Context my friend, the context of this thread demanded a slight revision on the saying.
