And I don't mean new in a "FPS MMO" or "RTS MMO" way.
A new Genre for games that can thrive in the MMO universe,
I'd like to think that the thing that will eventually bring World of Warcraft down isn't only World of Warcraft losing it's magic.

Something else, new and fresh is still in the unknown.
Maybe Genre isn't the answer, I'd love to know what you dudes and dudet's think about this.

Cheers

Maybe noir, or something based around criminals and law enforcement.
Pretty sure there was something like that already. I'm fairly certain the servers were closed after about a month.

APB, you mean? It's actually being rereleased pretty soon with some bug fixes. It's in closed beta at the moment.

I can't wait for The Secret World. Modern day urban setting + shittons of awesome monsters and guns and magic powers? FTW.

Sci-Fi would work, but the only people I see trying to make MMOs out of it are the guys doing The Old Republic and that one Star-Trek MMO. We need an ORIGINAL one, not one made from something already popular.

Noir could be amazing but in order for a game to truly feel Noir it has to have a very deep story and a strong naritive, that focuses on a very main and influental charecter. MMO's tend to give a story arc, rather then a plot. It might feel laking but perhaps that is another interesting point! (better story telling in MMO's)

Eh, I'd like to see it as a more social thing. Like Second Life, you can wander round all day just talking to people without any sort of combat at all...but wander into designated danger zones and giant leeches try to eat you.

TheTaco007 I think that "The Secret World" has an amazing potential to it's own right. I hope that Funcom can live up to it's potential as an MMO. Though I doubt that a company like that could support it's own product without a big help from a major publisher. MMO's are damned expensive to make and even harder to sustain..
...Let's just hope EA doesn't buy it and turns it into Dragon Effect.
(Just kidding I love mass effect and dragon age but that's Bioware not EA)

Do you mean to say that you don't think "World of StarCraft" would be awesome?

Hmm....

A photography MMO, where you have a camera, and are in a fantasy land, filled with monsters, aliens, cyborgs, zombies, wars, celebrations, natural disasters and all sorts of stuff, and you have a massive checklist of things to photgraph, from simple - a unicorn to nearly impossible - smuggle yourself onto an alien ship and photograph an alien autopsy. You could steal objects to bring back to normal cities and sell for money - a jar of dragon blood, or an alien material, and get points and prestige for interesting things you have photographed, and use the money to buy yourself a better camera, more film, more durable clothes, more informants in media/goverment to give you tip-offs for interesting things happening.

The whole MMO would basically function off exploration and experiencing things in the crazy "anythings possible" world, like a constantly updated capital wasteland in Fallout 3.

Atlantica Online is a turn based MMO, but you get a party of NPCs to fight alongside you. When you reach level 100 with your main character, you can reset them to level 1 as a 'Chainsaw Knight' class that has incredible stats...and a chainsaw!

I don't think a new type of setting will help, unless developers also stop copyting WoW's structure.
"Look at this! It's a completely new generation of MMO! So there are these two factions and..."

Supposedly, World of Darkness Online is going to be like this. If it ever comes out, that is. And you play as the leeches.

Funcom should totally make an Anarchy Online 2. That game was so awesome in its day. But unfortunately they won't for some reason. The Secret World does look cool though.

That would be a brilliant game!

Actually, that'd be amazing, but Blizzard has put too much into WoW to make another MMO. Which is a shame, since I don't like WoW.
