Being an American, I'm afraid giving a true opinion on this topic would single me out for termination so...oh wait, Bush is out of office: HELLS YEAH! I'd love playing games based on the Korean War, Civil War, WW's 1&2 with the option to play as someone who isn't American or Allied. I loved Civilization Revolution for that reason: Napoleon nuking Lincoln was always pretty damn funny...but imagine a game where you bust a cap in Lincoln's noggin!

If it wasn't for all the damn radical Americans who can't take a single wound to their pride without acting like infants; then it could be possible for a game like that to come out. By the way, I am an American.

List of Vs. America games.

-Deus Ex ( Vs. American Goverment)
-MGS (most of them are PMC companies and people with realtions to America or American related goverment shtuff)
-Borderlands (Red neck machine gun massacare)
-MW2 (American PMC)
-Army of Two (Again)
-Bioshock (most of the antagonists are American)
-GTA (trying to work against the American Law system to acheieve your American dream.)

Bear with me most of these are just generalisations that can be argued against.

This would be massacred by Fox News and their friends, and the pressure would be massive to cancel it. Won't ever happen, unless they don't mind not releasing it in North America.

God yes. I was actually impressed by Infinity Wards attempts in Modern Warfare 2, when you are attacking American soldiers. It felt good (from a nationalistic view) being a British commando slaughtering the shit out of our "allies".

Thank fuck I'm not a diplomat!

In all seriousness, I loved playing Dimitri in World at War, but that was still against the (eternal) bad guys, the Nazis. However, playing a badass russian (Russians are ALWAYS more badass than Americans. Always.) against America would complete my life.

Reading through this, it seems quite negative of America, which makes sense since I'm certainly no fan of America. Individual Americans, yes. America as a whole, no. Still, this isnt a politcal thread, so I'll try and stay away from that.

OT: I'd respect any developer who makes a game where Americans are the primary antagonist. Itd be against the usual stuff, and I'd probably love it.

Also, it'd be interesting seeing protest groups spring up like fucking weeds. I'm not sure, but I dont know of any Russian protest groups against CoD etc.

Weird, that.

Hang on a second, folks. There have been LOTS of games where you could fight the United States. Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, Silent Hunter 3, Aces over Europe, Aces of the Pacific, Aces of the Deep, Wolfpack, Red Baron, the Red Alert series, Il-2...I could go on and on. Hell, Chuck Yeager's Air Combat allowed the player to hop into a MiG in the Korean and Vietnam wars and shoot down F-86 Sabers and B-52 bombers!

Granted none of these are FPS games, but my point is I've killed many virtual American servicemen in my gaming career. There are few things as hectic (yet rewarding) as braving a hail of .50 cal fire to shoot down a flight of B-17s in an FW-190.

I liked that in COD MW2 we ended up fighting against americans, but not because they were americans, just because IW had the balls to stop making America the source of all good in video games.
I guess I missed that part, where was it exactly? I don't ever remember shooting any americans in MW2.
In the end you fight against the PMC's and Shepard is the bad guy.
Oh, the plane level or whatever that was after the credits?

That is the first Modern Warfare, the second is where you chase a helicopter in a litle boat while dodging missiles and other crap.

It wouldn't be a fun game, you'd spend all your time losing every fight.

Seriously though it would be fun. I'd like to have a game where I could try other countries tech and combat techniques. Also playing as some countries special forces groups would be fun. It'd be like reliving playing as the S.A.S. in COD4 all over again.

Villains are always more fun. I always want to play as the bad guys. They could still be portrayed as evil dudes or whatever if you wanted to keep it politically correct, and make America look good. But, you know, seeing as I've played other games where you can play both sides, I don't see why this should be any different.

The one reason we will never see it can be explained with 5 words: Number of sales in america.
Producers play it safe. Shooting america would never be met with cheers for it's bold aproach on things. It would be called unpatriotic by some, others would call it a terroristsimulator (you know who I'm talking about). And the media would blow it WAY out of proportions. (One station who I will not mention by name in particular.)
Stategy-games gets away with nuking americans because they have never been shocking or killing people up close so the general people wouldn't feel offended by it like dark skinned people don't get offended that the black chesspieces don't begin the game. The people in strategygames are faceless and identical. They don't give the same reaction as someone you shoot in a FPS.
All in all, I blame the media for the fact that I will probably never shoot americans as an british/russian/chinese/korean etc. in a videogame. That is unless one of the gamecompanies in Asia or Europe wants to give the US the finger at one point.

Hmm... I really don't remember that. Then again, just rented the game and played through it once...

This reminds me of something. A completely crazy and ridiculous idea I once had. Allow me to link.

Never mind that you can't see the little annotations (still haven't figured out how to make it zoom-in-able) the basic gist is an all-out war between everyone ever - completely tongue-in-cheek, of course. It would make for some pretty hilarious gaming, when you think about it. No matter which faction you're a part of. And some of them would get to fight Americans...
that is an awesome idea, quick sell it to a large game developer company!

You could play as a German who had enlisted in the professional army, then tiptoe around the controversial parts or put into context why the behaveiour wasn't raged against, then have him injured or somesuch on the eastern front in '42 and be sent to the French or Italian fronts.

No serious controversy since it's basically educational and doesn't meddle in the holocaust or other such nasties, and you get to play a variety of fronts, meaning different styles of combat, weapons, enemies and situations.

Heck you could even play at the invasion of Poland and feel yourself having the massive advantage of full air support, and you'd have the American conscripts at the end of your iron sights near the end of the game. Would put the insignificance of individual infantrymen into context too when you'd constantly have to withdraw due to American firepower.

Wasn't the last level in MW2 had the Americans as the bad guys? They can't advertise the game as "American are bad guys". Instead, it just needs to happen.

But Americans are a major source of video game income and a game where you are the Russians invading America won't fly for Fox News.

All "it wouldn't sell", it'd "be too controversial" comments aside, I would like to play a game that pitted you against the US. I think it'd be interesting.

I used to drive the M1 Abrams, and I think it'd be fun, if the game was somewhere towards realistic, to try taking one out as a ground pounder.

Yeah id play such a game, mostly because it would be nice to get a play from a different perspective, remember that good is simply a point of view. it wouldnt have to be set in the past either, could be china vs america which is something people have been talking alot about lately(north korea blah blah) but yeah, however most american companies would see this as being anti-american, anything that doesnt support america is against it by their view (only a sith deals in absolutes btw) but meh, it would be a nice change from all the pro-america shit out there atm.
