Graphics really don't bug me. I don't even want to think about how much time I wasted on my Tamagotchis and Pokemon. <_< Either way, I'd rather sacrifice graphics and have all that time spent on story writing, gameplay design and game length. Plus, there's a kind of retro charm about cheap graphics too.

if it looks like a duck
if it sounds like a duck
if it renders more than one duck polygon
i'll play it if it's a fun game

Well I used to like games kinda like that (Wonder Boy in Monster Land, or just Wonder Boy), but 2D Japanese games lose their appeal after a while. I prefer 3D games ATM.

A jrpg that forces you to finish it in under 30 seconds? that's fuckin novel!
And that's not bad graphics, that's pixel art. It's completely intentional, so it's considered aesthetic affect. And I really like it btw.

Of course, I'm the guy suggesting everyone go play Deus Ex and would gladly pay real cash dollars for a working atari 2600 with dial controllers (Super Breakout, baby! THE BIGGEST PIXELS EVAR)

That really doesn't matter to me seeing that it's a sprite based game. Do people truly honestly care about sprites?

As long as I can make out whats going on, I don't care really unless it isn't fun. Looks good though and I am not even a fan of the genre.

Leaving aside my strong dislike of JRPGs and tackling the question of graphics vs. gameplay, ever heard of something called "pak64"? It's a graphics set for an open-source game called SimuTrans, and barely beats Civ 1 on resolution. Do I care? Fuck no. The game is awesome even if it's butt-ugly.

sadly, these days with my awesome new computer, pretty graphics are a huge plus in my book, and often can be a deal breaker.
Hell I put 30 hours into far cry 2 even the the story and gameplay were sub-par.

That said, I still enjoy playing old awesome games with shitty graphics. I am currently playing through half life again and enjoying every second.. :)

Who cares its all about the gameplay. Its like judging a book based on cover art and font, and personally as long as its not in windings im cool with it.

I used to play games like this when growing up. I'd play it for nostalgia.

Are poor graphics a deal-breaker for you?
Initially, I can be quite concerned with graphics quality. I remember being instantly disappointed by the graphics in the demo for the most recent Hitman game. I have noticed however that once I become immersed in a game and how it plays, the graphics become much less important.

In short, bad graphics may stop me from not playing a game, but they won't prevent me from enjoying a game once I'm into it.

I don't really give a damn about this game but bad graphics are no reason to not play a game. If the gameplay is fun they I will get it. Some of my favourite games has really bad graphics. Namely super mario 64 and ocarina of time.

Depends on the game, man.
A game can come out in 8bit even now and still be great so long as it embraces that fact.
It depends on what the developer is going for and how it matches up with the gameplay.
Style is pretty important too.
Like, Borderlands doesn't have super high res realistic textures or anything, but it still looks damn good.

I don't mind the graphics being old, as long as it looks good. New graphics aren't necessarily good-looking either. I feel uncomfortable playing Warcraft III because all the units look like colourful golf balls, and the same will probably go for Starcraft II based on what I've seen of it. There's a difference between nice graphics and new graphics to me. That game had decent graphics, regardless of how dated it might look.

That said, I still wouldn't play it because of the awful, awful time limit.

Look I come from a time era when your character model was a square block, and your enemies were not that much different. And the soundtrack was bleep.bleepy.bleep bleep blooop - or maybe that was the sound effects, it was hard to tell the difference. And you weren't really sure if you were this square or that square, or even really what you were suppose to be doing, or why.

And this was in the dark ages of the Industrial Age, before the Civ advance into the Information Age.

So there was no way to even look up much information (this was prior to direct connect BBS even lol)
