In a show I won't really care if I like it, but in the diagram have to go with 6. 5 is pushing it, but I can't really decide if it's too big or not. 6 is where I think it instantly.

Also I thoughtthis thread would be about... you know pies.... they're never too big

5 is tolerable, although I'd say 4 is a sensible limit- coming form someone that isn't into their anime. 6 and above look like some kind of horrific genetic defect, although I reckon some of them might work in a really stylised art style. I mean, usually I'd think rugby ball-shaped heads are weird, but I don't mind on Stewie. His dad has balls on his chin.

i prefer the eyes on the lower end of the spectrum but the size of an anime characters eyes is not something i ever game any thought to until this very moment. Seems like up to and including 7 is ok with me before i start to sense any oddness. although if the surrounding art style fit better i doubt i'd notice

4 - 7 are the only ones that are well balanced enough. Everything under or over that is either purposely small or large. What matters is that the eyes are in balance with the rest of the head, then it doesn't matter how big or small they are.

But then only anime ever seems to get criticized for having huge eyes...

As many people said, it all depends on the style of your characters design. In the picture, presented by OP, the 6th choice I think has eyes that are too big. Also, choices 2, 3 and 4 are quite nice.

8&9 are probably to much, if it's used all the time. Some mangas change their style for chibi-scenes and then it's np.
And sometimes like in the case of PPG it's no problem either, it depends on the whole manga/anime i guess.

Not too create an echo chamber but has some other post has pointed out it depends on the style
and what kind of story it is.

Serious drama? Something from the 1st row.

Slapstick comedy? Do whatever.

Al though if I have to choose 8 and 9 are way to big.

7 and up looks more alien than human to me, so I'd say 6 is my limit. That said, as others have pointed out, any of them could work depending on the art style and tone.

It amuses me that people are saying 1 is "too small" or "creepy" when it's the only one that reflects what real humans look like...

I've never watched anime myself, but I do enjoy the art style.

Too big for... what exactly? Anything 4 or below is a preference but it doesn't get to the point where it's bothering me until 6-7.

Ehhhh- I'm not sure why people are off put by the larger anime eyes, truth be told I don't think I've watched any with what this list considers medium sized but really it's a ...gonna get some hate for this- it's a cartoon in the end, drawing exaggerated things like that isn't exactly new. Are people bothered by the size of dots that represent Mickey Mouse's eyes? How they've changed?

Either way who cares how big an anime girls eyes are, everyone is typically looking at their tits or ass apparently (DEM LINES), why not go over how big is too big in that dept eh?

If the character is meant to be an adult then no higher than three. I'll let it slink up to 4 for juveniles an 5 for outright infants.

So yeah the tendency towards putting infantile heads on sexy bodies that seems to be so common is right out.

I wouldn't touch the subtext of this thread with a moderately sized pole. :/

I usually prefer 4 and under, but some shows -like the aforementioned Azumanga Daioh- get a pass based on other merits. I mean, come on, how could you not love this face?

I only really like the 1st row. All the others, the eyes begin to go over other features, for example the fringe and I always find that weird to look at.

It depends on the overall style and what the rest of the characters look like, and how old they are supposed to be.

For example 2 and 5 could easily be in the same series, the latter the same person in a flashback as a child.

And then 9 could be when the show has these comedy/fantasy-segments.

A big benefit to having an animated show or a comic is that you can change the proportions to make them fit the mood of the scene.

This is my personal two cents

But in all seriousness when it comes to anime, I find #1 just as creepy looking as #9. It just doesn't work for me, style wise.

Wow, I hate to criticize but that's the pic they used to advertise the show?! Tell me the series doesn't have this many messed up human features all the time!
