After seeing the huge about of controversy that minecraft has generated throughout the march mayhem, i think one of the main problems is that people vote differently.

You can either vote based on what the developer has created over all.. (i.e. voting for nintendo because of super mario on the nes etc.).

Or you can vote based on what the developer has released recently and the quality of that.

Now for me personally, because march mayhem happens annually, I vote on what was released in the last year, (otherwise the big names like Nintendo will always win, because no one can trump over 2 decades of game releases).

Now I think that this is what is causing all the controversy with minecraft, it's the people who vote based on what the developer has released overall against the people who have voted in the last year.

Now it's arguable that if you only concentrate on the last year, that Mojang would beat Nintendo based on popularity and just the way it took off. But you could also argue that Nintendo deserve the title due to the large quantity of games that they have released, and also that they deserve to win based on their large time in the industry.

So, how did you vote for the march mayhem, was it based on the last year or based on the developer as a whole, and what's your take on the whole minecraft fiasco?

(Note: I'm trying to keep this thread as biased free as possible, because i've seen a lot of threads either for or against minecraft and they seem to cause a lot of rage amongst the posters, so I'm trying to make this as neutral as possible).

Companies that are huge, and companies that have popular games behind them.

Mine ended with Bioware fighting off against Valve and Valve winning solely because of Steam.

On last year. That's why I have Mojang winning it, and Bioware as the runner up for ME2.

I voted based on who I liked out of the two devs competing in each match-up. Oh, and Zynga. ;p

Simple:

If it's Bioware, I vote for them.
If it's Valve, I vote for them.
If it's Bioware vs. Valve, I go get my suicide gun...or just vote Bioware. Still in love with Mass Effect, I guess

i voted for the companies whos games iv most enjoyed, if i hadnt played a companies game then it was likely i would pic at random. but i also voted for blizzard without ever playing one of their games because i also can appreciate a company is good.
i voted for mojang to get past the first round because (i dont like minecraft) i appreciate they are a good company that have made a good game, but i honestly believe they shouldnt have beaten nintendo

I voted for them overall, otherwise it isn't really fair on the developers who made something brilliant a few years ago then haven't really followed up on that. Plus it gives a slightly unfair advantage to developers like Mojang who might never do anything other than Minecraft so saying that they're better than Nintendo's massive library of fun games is a little odd.

Well Capcom went really far in my matchups just because they made the Phoenix Wright games, only losing to Bioware.

And since i decided everyone and their pet hamster would be voting for Valve i didn't vote for them once just for sympathy's sake.

I voted for the developers I personally preferred. The two exceptions to this being matchups where I've only played a game from one of the developers (in which case, they got my vote), and matchups where I haven't played games from either of them, in which case I went for the one I thought had the better reputation.

My thought process was like this--

Which company do I like best?
Which company do I think the Escapists like best--based basically by looking at the output of the company as a whole and noting that Escapists tend to skew a) young and b) PC over console.

I go for a combination of the two. For example, Game Freak have really impressed me with the Gold/Silver remakes as well as Black and White, not to mention I've played and at least had a little fun with the entire pokémon series.

As for my stance on the Mojang thing, my opinion is that the 3DS, decent console sales and causing competitors to produce "Wii-like" peripherals beats Minecraft. Isn't always about the games for me.

I voted mostly on what the developer has done recently. That's why I didn't vote for Valve (besides the fact that I don't like their games).

The reason I've voted for Minecraft on every round so far is due to a combination of 2 things: personal experience (never played anything by Epic or Obsidian), and the desire to watch the huge explosions that will occur when Minecraft faces off against Valve.

For everyone else, it was history/my own experience.

I voted for whose games I liked better period. That's why Mojang didn't get very many votes from me because Nintendo has made my favorite game of all time (Wind Waker), Namco Bandai has my favorite JRPG series (Tales series), Obsidian made 3 of my favorite games (Mask of the Betrayer, New Vegas, and KOTOR 2). Voted for Mojang over Epic though, Epic hasn't made anything I liked since Jazz Jackrabbit 2. In my eyes, it wasn't fair for Mojang to actually be pitted against such developers, and I am really shocked to see how far they got (okay well, this is the Escapist, and with the huge amount of Minecraft fans on this site, I shouldn't be surprised).

Game Freak made Pokemon, so I voted for them. Only exception to this rule is BioWare, I really don't like where they're going, so I voted for Bethesda over them, even though KOTOR is another favorite of mine.

I look at a developer's entire history.

If Developer A released my all-time favorite game in 1993 and Developer B released a couple I thought were decent last year, I vote for Developer A.
