I usually use them for games that after an hour of play, I've realized that I could miss something that'll effect me later (which, the last time I was aware of this before it was too late, was Fallout 3. Damn medicine bobblehead... though, I could've used console commands, but that's worse.)
I'm a quite a bit of a min/maxer type.

And after I've beaten a game, if I feel like I want to play it anymore, I'll use a guide on my own free will. (like to find all the tapes in Bioshock, but that was more for the story. I missed Sander Cohen's Bunny-man tape.)

Edit: Damn, thinking of achievements gets me worked up to do the Rocket Gnome HL:Ep 2 achievement. But I hate those antlion tunnels...

Edit: Edit: And yeah, the times I'm stuck beyond all belief and or have hit a glitch I don't realize.

I really only use a guide if I'm thoroughly stuck in a game. I usually try to figure it out myself, though.

Same here.
Same here. I sometimes use them for fetch quests or treasure hunts as well. But only if it's 'hey I need thing. Go get it.' without telling me where thing is.

I don't mind guides. Sometimes it's just nice to be able to not have to crunch the mind too hard trying to figure out a puzzle or where to do next. Then again, sometimes it's just nice to have something to read on the toilet when you take a break during gaming.

Yep. I figure as far as achievements go, if it's a decent game I'm going to play through again.

Typically, I'll use one when absolutely stuck on something, to make sure I'm not missing something terribly important, for advice on really difficult fights, etc. I even find a lot of them to be pretty good reads, on their own merits.

I have a Fallout 3 walkthrough. There isn't a chance in hell that I'm going to explore every dirt clomp and side spot in the wasteland looking bobble heads, especially when I would have missed at least one without it. Finding the location of difficult to spot collectibles is a reason I buy walkthroughs.

I never use walkthroughs on my first playthrough but on my second one I want to see how other people do it. It can be very interesting and helpful.

Oh and sometimes I have to use them when I have no idea what I have to do or where I should go.

my mom won't play a game without them.. I find they cheapen the experience, so I like to play through at least once before using them, and then using them to get all of the secrets..

Solving the game's puzzles yourself sometimes results in Eureka moments, like recently when I was playing oblivion's main quest through for the first time and I deciphered the Mystic Dawn's Commentary book.. I was like "Yeah, I'm smart." felt good :p
This, play once though yourself on easy or medium. Then with walkthrough for 100% on hard. My dad does that sort of thing for FF, he still hasn't beaten Emerald Weapon on FF7. But he did come up with an awesome strategy against the Don Tonberry in FF10, got himself 99 sphere levels for everyone without even killing the thing.

You gave a perfect example there

The last and probably only guide i have used is getting the accursed bobble heads in fallout 3

lets face it :p i was never ever EVER going to find them without it, even with someone pointing me in the vague direction they are in or even telling me the name of the map :p
Yeha it is a long tedious process, but your bobblehead collector stand just looks so annoyingly unfinished without them all...

That medicine one is sneaky, but at least you can go back to vault 101. i missed the energy weapons one on my first playthrough and as raven rock blew up I had no idea I'd just screwed my chances of ever finding the energy weapons one...

I've only used a guide to find out how to get characters on Super Smash Brothers: Melee & Brawl, skulls on Halo 3, and Bobbleheads on Fallout 3.

For stupid puzzles, weirdly constructed levels or fetch/trading quests usually. Or for games that expect you to acquire things without telling you how (I'm looking at you, Majora's Mask)

I only use them for extra stuff after I have already beaten the game, or if I get to a spot that is too hard or confusing that I run the risk of not playing the game anymore.
