I like the Unreal Tournament way (#2), I don't even bother picking up the flag if I can't shoot. Plus, grabbing the flag and camping the enemy base in UT is a great way to get kills.
Call me crazy but I could have sworn UT was category 4?

Ah, it is. I read #4 wrong, I thought it meant when the flag touches the floor it's returned instantly.

I like the TF2 way (not 2fort, but Turbine and Doublecross), where the carrier can use most weapons, but no invulnerability, and the flag has a timer before it returns. Forces the defense to work as a team, while still giving the offense a chance to leapfrog it out of the base.

Like a few other people have said, Halo does it well. In the more recent versions it works like this:

The flag carrier moves slightly slower than everyone else.
The flag can be used for a one hit melee kill.
The flag carrier can't drive vehicles or be the gunner, but they can ride as a passenger.
Generally speaking, the flag carrier isn't marked on the map for the other team, but the flag is if it's dropped.
The defending team have to stand near their flag for about 15-20 seconds in order to return it (it's slightly faster with more people).

I like this setup. I once made an epic flag dash on foot across the entire length of Sandtrap (the largest map in Halo 3) and I managed to get five kills with the flag along the way. The way the flag carrier works with vehicles is also good, as you have to have team mates working with you to escape which often made the capture feel like a heist.

Yeah I'm worried a lot of people read it that way. Maybe I should do this again with better written categories.

I miss the old day of CTF in Mechwarrior 4 : Vengeance. It was so much fun.
What made it good imo was the fact that there was some sereous skill and teamwork needed to capture a flag. Basicaly it worked like this.
Each team had fee choice of what mech they would pilot, light, medium, heavy, and assault (i.e. really heavy). To actually stand a chance of winning a team would need to be a mix of at least three of these classes.
- Flag runners (my fave to play) would run a light mech like an Osiris, Raven, or Cougar.
- The flag defenders/chaser would run a medium or heavy such as Shadow Cat, Bushwhacker, Loki, or Thor
- Base defenders would run a Heavy or Assault, such as a Mad Cat or Dashi
- The flag would be dropped if the carier was killed and had to be returned to the base or defended where it was until it would auto return after 2 mins.

You needed good co-ordination between the whole team to win because the runner was virtually defenceless (having had to strip most heavy weapons so they could use the extra fee wight to fit a bigger reactor for more speed). You needed to actually communicate with your team because as well as few powerful weapons you would be running with no radar for most of the time so your team was the only way to really know where the enemy was.
Your defenders would be your support, taking out the other teams defenders and chasing down the other flag carrier. Your base defender's job would be to try and blow the living snot out of the enemy runner or defenders if they got too close

I really cant remember ever having as much fun playing CTF in any other game since, man i miss the Mechwarrior games.

P.S.
Dunno if anyone in my old clan is on these forums but if you are then... Hey! How goes it?
Oh and i was Raven of Clan Wolf USA, Alpha Trinary Coln. and our Kahn was Red Kerensky.
That sounds good, I only dabbled in Mech 4 online and never played CTF... sounds like I missed out. I used to just join team DM's and weave though the terrain in a Cauldron-Born to get up close to the pop tarts, then tear them apart with dual UAC20's... never got old.

OT: UT style for me

This Mechwarrior 4 stuff sounds amazing. You guys know that at http://www.mektek.net/ you can download Mech4 for free? And they've been putting out their own patches and updates for years, the last one like, a month or two ago. I always preferred Mech 3, but Mech 4 is the more popular online one that's been kept alive with mods and such. :)

That said,

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
UT/Quake 3/Tribes 2 flag rules are what I prefer most.
However, I like Instagib, and I like all-weapon, and I like the regular old CTF from both games. That said, the rules with the flag and the flag carrier are always the same.
UT2K4 and Quake live are probably where I've done the most CTF, and although I like flag carrying what I do/did most would DEFINITELY be flag/base defense.
So for me, it would probably help me more if the flag carrier couldn't shoot or whatever, but I like it as option 4 for the fast-paced play and everyone being a threat. One might say it facilitates a lack of teamwork, but I think it's the opposite.
This way, teamwork is more important in other ways. For example, you'll have to work together to secure armor, weaponry, and powerups for everyone on your team, especially your flag carrier. I couldn't name the amount of UT or QL games that were decided by a big team-fight in the middle, with the lone man left alive grabbing the U-damage or a Haste powerup, and pushing to get to the flag, either slaughtering everyone in his way, or running circles around them.
And coordination becomes CRITICAL once the enemy team has a powerup - you need to position yourself, trade weapons. It's possible to time it so when they're escaping (EFC ESCAPING HIGH) to have a crossfire set up. Since he can't kill both of you at once, the other one of you can get a good rocket or rail shot on him before he can nail ya, and even quad-damage won't make someone invincible... :)
Damn that takes coordination.
Ahh team D.M was a hoot too. Fave Mech was a Mad Cat with x6 Clan ER Large lasers, x2 Clan LRM 20's, and x2 Clan LRM 10's...with no Heat Sinks for NH/UA. For games with heat enabled I'd drop the LRM 10's and fit 4 Heat Sinks instead...still ran hot but if you were careful then good times ahoy. :eek:)
...Edit...
Oh and Valiance yeah i know but unfortunately MTX refuses to work on my rig. This makes me a sad panda :eek:(
Unreal Tournament style. I at least want to defend myself and rely on others at the same time but share the blame whenever the flag carrier dies.
Mechwarrior 4 CTF was one of my favs too, and I played CTF almost exclusively because it was the only game mode that truly made use of all the classes.
It was awesome, I too was a runner, i loved just running around like your life depended on it(because it did) and unlike all other CTF in other games you had to decide what rile you would play b4 the mission started and take the right mech for the role.
Ironically I came to this thread while looking for MW4 CTF maps as i just installed MTX today.
My all time favourite is CTF in the Far Cry series. I love Steal the sample so much that I even made an account to post about it.
Similar to Timesplitters with carrier only able to carry half a dual weapon. However, the flag carrier could throw the flag (a baton) like a football.
An excellent way to destabilize any sort of camping in the base, it really made teams fight it out for control of key points on the map.
Add to this that the flag carrier was able to sprint and drive vehicles (the quad is the best vehicle in any game) and you have a very difficult to defend flag.
The focus wasn't so much on offense and defense, but moreso on who was where and who had what spot in the middle of the map. If the flag carrier wasn't supported by teammates in the middle then he wouldn't make it to the base unless he pulled off something amazing or sneaky.
It could go from a slow, controlled game to a frantic mess so quickly.
That game rewarded skill so much but was accessible to any sort of play style. It's sad that no game has matched that to this day, except for maybe TF2.
I miss that game so much.
