If the protagonist is silent, then that means there's a greater chance the game is a zelda game. sweet...

TheBluesader: Seconded! But even Raz would say "See you in hell!" after setting fire to seagulls with his mind.
Yes, well...he IS at summer camp. I recall feeling like saying "See you in hell!" a lot when I was at summer camp. Summer bible camp.

I kept praying for psyonic powers and a wacky dream conspiracy, but all I ever got was shirts-and-skins soccer and not being allowed near the girls' bunks. St00p1d reality.

Eh, I wouldn't really call Raz naive, he's just optimistic and friendly. :p

Although I like Raz, I prefer my protagonists to be cynical and sarcastic (tbh the sarcastic nature of Psychonauts, where there are characters created for bigger things, but there's always somebody throwing a sarcastic remark at it, saved it :p). I hate too heroic and epic characters ("And from the depths came the savior of the world!"). Whenever there's a scene where some character tries to make the viewers/players cry or smth like that I get ashamed for the creators for their pathetic attempts (I'm too empathic and it doesn't really suit with my cynical nihilism :( ).

I would like to see a game protagonist with the personality of Dr. House.

(oh, and I mean first-season-caliber House, not the wishy-washy "humanized" version they've been pawning off on us since about halfway through season two)

well about the protagonists, im not sure, but i like when they have a bit of personality but that they dont be those heroes that want to show their badassness

Cynical, sarcastic, and funny, are all good, but it's a fine line between "occasionally a good one liner" and "being a dick who thinks he's witty"

Aha you beat me to it
In case you dont know who House is, he's the most sarcastic, misanthropic, manipulative, king of one liners that will stop at nothing to get the job done

The cynical, gruff, reluctant hero is typically my favorite, like Snake or Garrett.

I dislike silent protagonists. Seems like a cop-out to me. Typically there is some side-kick or other type of character who basically speaks for you. Makes me feel like I'm playing some sort of spineless tool.

Oh then there is also the kind, gentle, honest hero who always does what is right, except while occasionally going on murderous killing sprees as his alter-ego personality.

I really dislike playing as the incredibly corny good-guy-at-all-times-love-and-justice-always-prevail crap, mostly because the game will try to find a way of giving you solutions that don't compromise your cornyness, there are no impossible decisions, no compromises and no harming innocents for the greater good. Bullshit always prevails

A silent protagonist is as good as the cast around him (GLADOS !!)

I like my protagonist to be cruel and merciless...I just can't wrap my head around giving and helping (shudder) when I could be stealing and killing lol.

You've got me thinking about the Mass Effect cop-out ending again. Curse you.

I generally like silent protagonists the most, but sometimes the silent part can feel a little forced. In HL 1 Freeman's role was perfect. However, there were a few times in HL 2 I felt that any normal person would have been saying something during a few moments in the game (like meeting with Breen). I'm certainly not suggesting that they give him a voice, that would ruin everything.

I really like Garrett from Thief and Sam from Splinter Cell. They come across as guys who know how skilled they are, but also know their limitations. They're as cool as can be without turning into caricatures like Duke Nukem or Serious Sam.
