Semi pro is closest to my preference. I like stealth utilities almost as much as I like stealth itself. This is the Thief, Deus Ex or Splinter Cell (up to Chaos Theory) approach, where you can't really brute force your way through a level, but you have enough tools to creatively get out of a situation if you're caught instead of just getting a failure screen.

I guess a tie between semi-pro and average. Depends on what kind of game it's meant to be, really.

If it's meant to be a survival horror game, then it should be pro or semi-pro. If it's a game where you're meant to be stealthy it should be somewhere near semi-pro and average. If it's a game where you're a master assassin, like Dishonored, it should work harder to give me more non-lethal options be average.

If you can just buttpound all the enemies you meet then you're on too low a difficulty or Stealth probably isn't the main selling point.

I really enjoy semi-pro, though. When given the option I stealth it up to the point where I want to be little more than a whisper on the wind.

I'm gonna answer the question a slightly different way, and say I like my stealth optional.

That is to say, I hate forced stealth in a game.
That and...

That. Something like Dishonored, if that makes sense. If you give me too many toys, I'll go kill everyone instead. If you make me try to make the stealth fun and creative, I'll take stealth.

This might be a bit shocking, but I don't THINK I have ever played a "stealth" game.

I have played Fallout 3 and Elder Scrolls and that has a stealth mechanic, but I am guessing that doesn't count.

I plan to play Deus Ex:HR soon, but I haven't yet. I haven't played any Thief games, Splinter cell games or original Deus ex games..

It isn't that these games don't interest me, I have just never played them yet.

It depends entirely on the game that I'm playing. I've played games that are harsh and unforgiving the moment you are seen (Abe's Oddysee is quite a good example of this), I've played games where if you try to stealth and get caught you can still try to hold your own (sections of Metro 2033 and to a lesser extent some of the Timesplitters games). To be honest as long as you're not trying to shoehorn either forced stealth or forced combat into a game where it really isn't fitting then you're good.

I'm inclined to agree... mainly because I've spent the last three weeks addicted to that game... -_-

However, that and Deus Ex:HR (minus the bossfights, that is... :/ ) make good stealth games wherein you can make merry with the sneaks and knives to the neck, like how AC games are when you fail because you're detected (which isn't a mission requirement often enough, unfortunately).

I like games where stealth is a viable and well-supported approach, but I like it to be optional. I don't like insta-failing the mission just because a guard saw a tiny sliver of my ass poking out from the car I was hiding behind. I like to play as a character that can be as competent in a firefight as they are in stealth. With deus ex, for example, I carried around a large powerful gun that I saved for emergencies while ghosting about and occasionally knocking out guards. The playstyle prioritized intelligent planning and analysis of the situation over brute force, but didn't revoke the latter from the toolbox.

Get This... http://www.gog.com/gamecard/thief_gold and this.. http://www.gog.com/gamecard/thief_2_the_metal_age then throw this..http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.389431-System-Shock-2-Thief-2-Get-Surprise-Patcheson Thief 2 on Thief 2. Best stealth games right here.

Don't forget those great fan made missions I referenced either. As far as Splinter Cell goes, the best one is Chaos Theory. And I'd play the original Deus Ex before/over HR, btw.
Those Thief games really do seem interesting, thanks for sharing, you have peaked my interest. I know very little about these games so now I am looking into them a bit more. But with the steam sale and christmas coming up, I have to be careful about running into any purchase for the next few monthes.

Buying old games is always scary for me since I am on Windows 7, even though there is those unofficial patches, things tend to go wrong for me when it comes to computer games.

I'm not sure what category the MGS series would fall into. I happen to like it since its not too hard nor too easy imo

"Semi pro" (althougt I dont know why would you call it even that. It depends on the game) is the best one imo.

You should have *some* way to defend yourself, even if it is something very minor and that delays the enemy for just a couple of seconds. Otherwise they might as well show you the game over screen as soon as you are spotted. But, then again, it all depends on the game itself.

I'd say... If you get caught, you can't just shoot your way out. You can shoot, and use it as a distraction, but you can't just shoot it out and walk away. Instead, you get caught, you run, and pick off your pursuers one by one. If the situation permits, you can spray them down, but only if you manage to position yourself just right.

I also like Splinter Cell: Conviction, but mostly because it's stealth-action. Not stealth.

my favourite stealth franchise is the Hitman series. You can either be so sneaky you are never seen or you can simply go in guns blazing. You're given a choice and a rating based on how you did. I love it.

semi pro: same as pro but you can use traps to kill, stun enemies
Average: Can knock out/kill enemies only from behind

I voted Semi-pro but these two are my prefered one, specially if they are done at the same time.

Games that implement Backstab mechanics are usually the ones i enjoy the most of stealthing them up, like Deus Ex.
