Usually I just make sure to get to certain points each sitting (usually chapter beginnings) before finishing, then memorise where I'm up to from that. Haven't used a bookmark in years.
I do the same, or generally leave it face-down if I get distracted by something that needs my attention.

I just remember. At most I have to look for 30 seconds to find the right page, but usually I just stop at a chapter or something.

I usually look at the page number and remember it.

on the e-reader thing I just press bookmark or turning it off does the same job. no point remembering page numbers when they change with the font size.

cant stand people who are overly protective of their shit
Sounds like the way I treated my lotus ("if the working parts are good then who gives a shit I probably break the body on a track anyway") but not my books. When my children get their fingers on my books they'll be worn worn with suitably thumbed pages but otherwise in perfect condition.

Unlike the books I borrow from my dad who apparantly subscribes to you method of book care. I'm lucky if there's a spine attached and all the pages are still around.

I use a tag off of a Doctor Who t-shirt I have as a bookmark. Sometimes I also use my bus pass, but that's only the three days a week I go to college.

Bookmark, usually a piece of paper. But whatever I choose to use as a bookmark the first time, I use the same all the way through until I've read the book. So if I happen to pick a corner ripped from a trash mail ad, I won't throw it out and switch for a better even if one would be readily available.

Currently I'm using a playing card, a joker to be exact.

Random piece of paper used as a bookmark.
This. I usually grab whatever the nearest and least important piece of paper and use it as an improvised bookmark.

Unless if it was a book that belongs to the school I'm in, I normally use dog-ears. Otherwise, I'd use a bookmark.

Dog ear for me. I don't know why, but I just can't stand bookmarks. I don't know what to do with it when I'm reading and I feel like everyone is looking at it to see what kind of bookmark I have. Yes I know I'm weird. Oh and they always seem to fall out.

I often use the receipt I got when buying the book.

Oh, and one time I also tried to lie a paperback spread out, face down, in the sun. This, it turns out, is not a good idea. The book was sort of ruined, but it's not like it really matters. The book in question was after all *Ahem*[sub]eclipse[/sub]*Ahem*...
