Well I pretty much just run around and shoot whatever is available to me. Of course I miss because, living in Australia, the lag is always awful. That's my strategy in multiplayer.
Single player, I just select my weapon according to the situation and generally fuck the AI up. Its not generally that hard.
Then I get bored and go to play something more meaningful.

I don't have a particular class. Playing Bad Company 2 recently means I play as my class demands.
If I'm assault I'll go in first, though I'm not gung-ho and will be cautious when i need to be. If I'm a medic I'll try to keep myself alive as long as possible to heal team mates, and so on for the other two classes.
In modern Warfare, I like the idea of sniping but never manage to pull it off that well. I'm somewhere in between camping and rushing. I'll hold a spot for a while but never like to stay too long. And I don't use any class that involves continuous sprinting and knifing.

Although I avoid it in every other game because I like being in a team but going lonewolf, behind enemy lines. I don't like playing directly with others because I find too often that they will give our position away too easily or they will betray me... Counter-sniper. Long range rifle as a primary, with a pistol for those close quarter encounters. Preferably with some kind of explosive on the side. You'll likely find me (though you really won't) hidden in the trees half a km up the map, booby trapped with C4 taking down enemies before they even knew what hit them.

I stay back and pick off enemies with a sniper rifle. Especially on higher difficulty settings barricades and a sniper rifle were my best friends.

I like to sneak around and jump people when they least expect it. I love it even more when I scare the shit out of them as well.
I'm not a great FPS player, but I did enjoy Bioshock quite a bit and I like Left4Dead 2 as well. I like having a nice weapon that sprays a lot of ammo. No one shot, one kill for me. I like to see tons of enemies falling at once.
It varies from game to game, but for the most part I just pop my head out unload a shit load of ammo in whoever's face I see first, hide again, reload, and repeat. Sometimes I get bored and just run around gunning down everything with a pulse. Fire is always a good choice too.
My best friend is hilarious. He cannot shoot for shit, like seriously he can't get a head shot on a still target 5 feet from his face, but if you give him any explosives or fire he will turn into a fucking monster. If you see him with a rocket launcher or explosive, you'd better run because he will fuck you up. I think that probably stems from his lack of regard for his own life though, because many times he has backed me into a corner and dropped a grenade at both our feet and just stood there blocking my escape.
