I'll leave the decision of which one I am talking about up to you.
But, in all seriousness, I'm remembering that butcherization.
On topic: I usually sound out each letter. Eff Ay Cue.

That's happened in English with "snafu" and (to a lesser extent) "fubar", even though neither one is even remotely similar to a related English word. (Interestingly my spellchecker even accepts "snafu" in lower case.)Cowabungaa said:I just say fak, making it somehow sound not like fuck. I don't know how, but I manage.
Unless your Dutch, where "lol" is an actual word as well, having a meaning pretty close to the English acronym to boot.WOPR said:lol --> lawl
As for why that's happening, some acronyms get so integrated into, by lack of a better word, regular language that they at one point get treated like regular words.
Yep damn all those people who pronounce L.A.S.E.R, R.A.D.A.R and S.O.N.A.R phonetically. All those people are annoying. This is a totally new thing that's lame.WOPR said:the normal way is "F.A.Q." because it's an acronym; I have no clue when people started trying to pronounce acronyms...C95J said:The normal way...

This doesn't apply only to the poster I'm quoting, but everyone who's used the word acronym erroneously everywhere. Please learn the difference between acronym and abbreviation. An acronym is deliberately shortened in a way that makes it a pronouncable word. An abbreviation is just a shortened version of a series of words with no concern for whether it can be spoken out loud in it's abbreviated form.WOPR said:the normal way is "F.A.Q." because it's an acronym; I have no clue when people started trying to pronounce acronyms...C95J said:The normal way...

That reminds me of when I use to watch Lost before it went stupid, they had that Muslim dude getting interrogated in Australia and guy playing the ASIO (Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, think MI-5/6)Agent actually said it as "A-S-I-O", a massive "WTF?" moment followed, I've never heard it said that way by anyone ever, it took me a while to work out what they were talking about.incrediblegeek said:When you use a lot of acronyms, you start to sound like an idiot when you actually spell them out.WOPR said:the normal way is "F.A.Q." because it's an acronym; I have no clue when people started trying to pronounce acronyms...C95J said:The normal way...

High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMVE)= Hum-vee
Government Purposes(GP) = Jeep
Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA) = Scu-ba
Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile(AMRAAM) = Am-ram
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) = Na-sa
It's not unusual to create phonetic pronunciations of acronyms, especially considering cumbersome these acronyms can be.
Try making a sentence using a couple acronym-words, and pronounce each and every letter. Tell me you don't sound like an ass.
Pretty much this, I say "F-A-Q" normally, but occasionally (like when I pronounce GameFAQs) it'll come out as "Faq".chromewarriorXIII said:I'll usually say "Eff-Ay-Que" but sometimes I say "Fack" for some reason.
