Hen-tie is the way that you're supposed to pronounce it. I don't think I've ever heard anyone pronounce it hen-tay.

Well, guess it doesn't matter how someone says it.
If you want to be correct it's hen-tie.

Otherwise your wrong, and no debating it. It's not a Final Fantasy term with maybe a hidden pronunciation. It's a Japanese word, that's how you say it.

I always used to pronounce it Hen-tay till I saw some comics that had hen's wearing ties and making jokes about 'oh this is what them Japs are into' and I corrected myself. Easy mistake to make if you never heard someone pronounce it before.

Seriously, though, it's good to know that some people are actually familiar with Japanese pronunciation.

Fun fact: they mangle English loan words just as bad as we do theirs. Let's play a game. Can anybody tell me (without the aid of Google or Wikipedia) what "terebi," "puroresu," and "bijuaru noberu" mean? Hint: the first two are abbreviations.

That is one funny comic.

I wonder if I should show my group of friends this thread. Maybe I can finally win that arguement...

You mean the "tie vs. tay" argument? All you have to do is a little Wikipedia-ing. Here, I'll cut out all the work for you. Like others have said, Japanese is not like English. Each vowel has one specific pronunciation. Combining different vowels, however, augments the sound. The "ta" in "hentai" is pronounced "tah." The "i" is pronounced "ee." It's technically "heh-n-tah-ee," but when you say it fast and it comes out as "tie."

*Blank stare*

Do you mind if I use that? I can so win with that arguement.

I know Terebi means TV, but the other two...I haven't taken enough Japanese to know them without looking it up.

EDIT: looked them up and laughed my ass off at how obvious they are.
