From UK, hence Zed. Standard.

What really confused me a while ago, and I'd forgotten about until just now, is why some people pronounce J to rhyme with the letter I. "Jaye", as opposed to of "Jay". Anyone here do this and can explain what the deal is with that?
I have never in my life heard someone doing that. It must be some kind of slang?
I haven't heard anyone do it for several years now, actually, but I distinctly remember a few people doing it when I was younger. It might have died out by now, I've no idea.

I say zed because I come from the land down under, and have a mate who has a go at people who say zee and aren't from America, he doesn't do it so much after I got him to say it by asking which Dragon ball he watched as a kid.

I say it zee even though Aussies are supposed to say it zed.
This.
One of my mates keeps having a go at me for saying it, but I don't give a shit.
I pronounce it how I think it's correct, unless I'm corrected by a large number of people.

Because this question has been done and redone (and is only the outcome of a silly culture difference), I'm going to answer it in a simple to read format.

Switch ( country_of_origin ){
Case "Uk":
 z_pronounce="Zed";
 break;
Case "USA":
 z_pronounce="Zee";
 break;
default:
 cout << "Stop being awkward, and pick one.";
}

... or at least that's how things should go.

Fantastic. More of this attitude.

"You say 'tom-ay-to' whereas we pronounce it 'correctly'"

When I read the letter it sounds like 'zed' in my head. This is because I speak British English. It's a learned preference and also why I don't call them stripy horses zeebras. Others pronounce it differently and that is usually because they speak a different type of English. Or they've watched too much Sesame Street.

Anything else? Want to pick up on the pronunciation of leisure? Or smaller details like whether or not the past of travel has one or two ls? How many people say fortnight? Which part of the body is a fanny? The verb "row" is the same, but what about when two people have a row? Tell me, for the love of God, what do you think a vest is?!

Eh.

I live in Canada, so it's 'zed' most of the time. I did spend most of my toddler years in the States, thus learning the alphabet from American Sesame Street, so sometimes 'zee' slips out.

Because I work for the military, though, it becomes 'Zulu' when I'm on the job.

I pronounce it "zed" - the way the entire english-speaking world other than America pronounce it.
and me, dont forget me!

I mean, I was taught to say "zee", changing it would be like changing the letter "bee" to "kareem abdul jabbar" for me...

As far as I know the sound I make when pronouncing the letter Z doesn't even exist in the english language. Here it would be "zett" [tsɛt] and the Z-sound is made by pressing your tongue against your palate and removing it while making a hissing sound without actually using your vocal cords. Describing it like that makes me glad it's one of the least used letters in my language. German that is.

Also hate when people pronounce H as "Hey-ch"
Is there another way of pronouncing it?

OT: Zee, which I should probably stop doing because it's easy to confuse it with C.

Well usually I would pronounce it 'Zed', but since moving to Germany 5 months ago, I now pronounce it 'Zed' and 'Tss' when speaking English or German respectively.

Something like Zimmer becomes Tssimmer.

They're an odd bunch, the Germans.

Zee. I didn't even know Zed was the correct way. Doubt I'd stop though, since "zee" was what I learned when I was little.
