If I'm talking about a hand-to-hand attack in a game I've always used "Mee-Lee". But if its refering to a brawl at a football game (or similar) I use "Meh-Lay". Weird I know

Me Lee. Its how it is spelled and that's how I learned to say it.

Meh-lay, with the stress on lay. But in a small corner of my heart it is still "mealy". I first encountered it as the name of the first island in Monkey Island. To me that island will always be Mealy Island.

Where's the vocalised 'g' in 'thought'? Why isn't 'corps' pronounced like 'corpse'? How did 'ti' come to be pronounced as 'sh' in words such as 'caption'?

If there is any language that fucks with 'rules of pronunciation' it is English. And anyone who knows anything of English etymology can tell you that a massive part of our lexicon is derived from Latin/Greek/Arabic/French/German.

It does, it sounds less weird because everything else you say sounds weird anyway. But in a good way!

I say "may-lay", which I believe is good enough French pronunciation to be expected of an American.

I pronounce it "May-Lay." As long as we all know that we're talking about the same thing, I really don't think the pronunciation is all that important. It's like that whole Poe-teh-toe/Poe-taw-toe(Potato) thing. As long as we all know that we're talking about the bloody vegetable, who cares?

Like my name is Lee and I am trying to tell a foreign person, "me lee". I wonder why we do that, say it louder and more stupidly.
