Today was my third day at my new job. After a long day of labor we decided to take a break. We talked about all sorts of things, but somehow things eventually got to homosexuality. They were asking what would they do if they had a gay son. A lot of the stuff was pretty harsh. When it was my turn I simply stated I would be fine with it, and that it was something they cannot help and there was no reason to dislike them for it. I found their views interesting, mainly because these are seemingly kind people who seemed very normal. These guys were all from different towns though. In my area homosexuality is accepted and nobody has any issues with it. I find it strange that neighboring towns have such different views on things. So, how does your town/school/area treat homosexuality?

(We are all in our late teens, just in case you are curious if they were adults or not)

I'm from an area filled with xenophobes who say that anyone unlike them in anyway deserves to die.

I'm around a military post, which was conventionally polled to see what the general opinions on homosexuals were.

The results were typical for a soldier, though they seemed to surprise everyone else. The answer?

We don't give a shit one way or another.

In my area, people seem to be polar opposites. There are a lot of really awesome people here, but then there are a bunch of people that are unimaginably homophobic. It's kind of weird. : /

Well I can't really say I know how the adults in my area treat homosexuality, but most of the teens I know consider it to be a choice and some even consider it to be wrong. It's very disappointing, but they are all teenagers.

Nominally, we're all tolerant of different sexualities and whatnot.

In reality, it's very easy to come up with a justification for harassing people who "just happen" to be homosexual, if you feel the need to justify yourself at all.

I really don't know. If I were to stereotype, I would say no since people around here would probably be classified as "rednecks."

In the NY-metro area it's a social faux pas to be overtly homophobic in public, which is nice I guess. It still varies from person to person though. Most of the people I've met don't particularly care if you're gay, though many of them still hold prejudices and see LGBT people as some sort of stereotyped "other".

Staten Island may be exception to this, being Staten Island and all.

I would say so. But, in the town I used to live, about 15 years ago some high school kids beat a homosexual young man to death. :(

Alsong as they werent a total stereotype i wouldnt mind my son/daughter being gay
But that wasnt the question, so anyway i'd sayy its a total mix, sometimes people will be cool with it, and other times you'd get a brick thrown at you (true story)

Judging by the people I know in my area, I'd say Homosexuality is highly disliked, even hated. I live in the middle of the country around a bunch of rednecks. They hate anything that isn't like them, including any other race, religion, or way of life really. But that is judging by how most of them behave, not everyone is like that. The ratio is around 60/40 for those who don't like them to those who don't care.

Well, it's not good to be gay here. However it is accepted. Hear me out.

No one I've met here really wants to discriminate against gays, and most people are very okay with the idea of same sex marriage. They have no problem with them ideologically. However, when a gay couple walks past them at the pub they'll laugh and make jokes to each other.

It's weird.

I haven't seen or heard of anything homophobic happening. I'm sure there are people in my community who hate gays, but there have been no major incidents.

It's alright, If they keep it to themselves.

IF they go making out in the middle of the park, someone will say something.

We do need an "other" option. My "area" doesn't have an opinion on Homosexuality. I live in a tiny area with maybe a dozen homosexuals living here. There are so few that the community as a whole doesn't really have an opinion one way or another. It's such a small area that we know every single person in some way at least. it's not, OMG he's gay, hide the children. It's more like: oh look it's Frank(not a real name), Jenny's friend. Isn't he gay?

The street and the surrounding estates I live on don't seem to care and that suits me fine as I accept homosexuality one of my first friends who lives about 5 minutes away from me told everyone his sexuality at the school prom most he got was a 'meh'.

Though I'm not sure I can talk for the rest of the town around us.
