Poll: How Hard/Heavy do you like your music?

5-7. I quite like bands like Gun's and Roses, but most my music tastes fall into around the Iron Maiden and power/prog metal area. (Listening to Blind Guardian right now) I probably won't go further than a 7, bands like Rammstein are probably about as heavy as i would go.

When I'm gaming, I'll tolerate up to about 10ish.

If 10-11 is maximum, Disturbed cant even come close to being that high.

It is a very soft band, no harsh sounds or atmospheres at all.

They can't come close to 10 or 11, but that's the point of having a scale. You seem to be rating things as 'heavy' or 'not heavy'. Either that or you're just joking, which I think must be more likely.

I must say the stuff above 8 is barely pushing it. Overdone rhythm, that's all. 8 sounds best. Will try looking for something heavy, but I'm not sure I'm sure about what I'm talking about myself.

I can listen to anything on the scale, from calm ambient to psychotic death/grind.

But as Novskij said earlier, I often listen to stuff that goes leaps and bounds beyond the 11 range.

Also, OP, I'd swap out number 1 on the scale for the Dead Can Dance song I've posted, and move the top 3 on the higher end down a notch. And probably fill the 11 spot with anything in this spoiler of mine.

I like Fleshgod Apocalypse, but they're around the 9-10 range. Just saying.

well it kinda depends. If you were going to do it on a scale of how low tuned the guitars are in SOME of the music I like it would easily be 11 (I'm pretty sure that song didn't have 8 string ), but I kinda dislike more screaming than, say, Periphery

Your scale seems very broken. Sorry, but I think the leap from regular Death Metal (Cannibal Corpse) to whatever the fuck your 11 is supposed to be is retarded. You do know there is heavier stuff than Cannibal Corpse that is actually music? The Faceless, Suicide Silence, The Black Dahlia Murder etc.
Plus, Anthrax to Slayer makes sense, but what about Black Metal? Much heavier than Thrash, not as heavy as Death.
Anyway, I can listen to the heaviest stuff, as long as it's still musically correct, and it still sounds like music, instead of idiots screaming and hitting instruments.
However, my favourite bands sit around your 8 and 9. I do really like Cannibal Corpse, but I love bands like Judas Priest, Iced Earth, Slayer, Dream Theater.

I fixed the eleven. I'm not very familiar with that level, so I was kind of guessing a bit.

The link had some examples of black metal, I wasn't familiar enough with it to really put an example. The more ambient stuff would start around nine, with most falling in near ten. It's not as musically heavy as, say, Brutal Death Metal, but it's very harsh. Some black metal goes to 11 though.

I've heard some Iced Earth on youtube and enjoyed it, what would you say is their best album?

That depends. How much do you like Judas Priest?
The Glorious Burden (get it with the Gettysburg bonus disc, thank me later) has Ripper Owens on vocals. Me, I love that man (he filled in for Halford on Demolition and Jugulator) and I think that is easily their best album. The rest have their normal vocalist. He's good, but nowhere near the levels of Ripper IMO. Anyway, check out a few songs from Glorious Burden, Gettysburg is amazing to just listen straight through, takes about half an hour. If you don't like his vocals (I have met a few crazy people who don't lol) then I'd suggest Horror Show.

I like some epic orchestral music, but i like SOME heavy songs too.

I don't really mind how heavy some bands are - it's whether they have something that can be identified as a tune or not. You know, with verses and shit. For example, I didn't have a clue what Trivium were screaming/ vomiting about in their second album but the actual tracks were well structured and the guitar was amazing *gushes*. I'm too fond of guitar solos so I'm probably a 9 at most. That Cannibal Corpse song was quite boring for a 10. It just sounded like someone shouting, 'Rwooooooaaaar' down a cardboard tube for five minutes.

So in their production they made sure that their chugging is particularly audible and heard.

How does that even make them harsh?

Their on 1, their a very soft band, their sounds are very mainstream and accessible, anyone can handle those sounds.

Did you even look at the examples in the link? Smoke on the Water is on level 5. Disturbed is definitely "harder" than Smoke on the Water.
