I like the older stuff.

Everything from the past 6 to 7 years (not counting Ghibli) has been dogshit.

What the hell happened to movies like Akira and Memories; Movies which had jawdropping hand drawn animation?

I haven't had cable for a long time and got really bored with the lack of scope of the shows I saw. It is a change of pace, and one that I can appreciate. The one concept that I keep refering back to is Death Note. Kid gets book that can kill with a name and a face. Tries to become a new god by killing all bad people in the name of justice. As much as I like House, CSI, Family Guy, Sci Fi, anime's style has more of an impact for me, especially because they often keep moving and are (usually) very short at about 24 episodes. Almost all tv dramas go on...and on.... and on.... and on.... (I know there are animes that are exceptions, I did use 'most')

I watch quite a bit of anime and am even president of my college's anime club (which actually does more than just watch anime, believe it or not). I enjoy most of it but tend to go for the edgier, darker themed anime rather than the DBZ or Pokemon styled ones.

But it was actually Video Games that turned me on to anime. Games such as Star Ocean and Final Fantasy paved the way for me to discover Japanese pop culture, etc, and the rest is history.
I know, off topic, but I'm pres of a college anime club too, though we are small and just watch anime. What else do you do in your club?

The thing is, I've come to terms in accepting that "anime" isn't a concrete genre that can be judged as a whole, at least not in my eyes. Primarily because I have a Japanese wife and we lived many years in Japan, and really - anime is just a blanket term like animation, not a single genre - in fact it's the same word but contracted and filtered through the Japanese languages extremely limited and simple sound structure. Yes, cultural and stylistic differences exist - and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a *huge* fan of some of those differences. I'm rarely attracted to anime, the only time I will go out of my way to see one is if it's by a filmmaker I have come to love - such as Miyazaki, Satoshi Kon (RIP), Mamoru Oshii or other Ghibli animators like Isao Takahata. Otherwise a friend has to poke me into seeing one. Usually, I judge them individually as I would any movie - I may not be the biggest fan of the animation styles (At least not always, Satoshi Kon and Miyazaki impress me sometimes.) and I rarely like "action" anime, at least not things like Dragonball or Naruto, but if the movie or programme is genuinely good and is relevant to my interests like Death Note (Thrillers and goth), Ghost in the Shell 1 & 2 (Philosophical sci-fi), Paprika (Dreams and psychology) or Mononoke Hime (mythology and history) then I like it.

So I guess I'll hit "like" but I do wish there was an "inbetween" option.

Me. I've never really liked the narrative style or tropes used in most animes, it makes my brain want to vomit.

There are a few I'm looking at watching, though.

I truly dislike most of it, especially the anime version of metropolis. What an abortion that was.
My big problem is the way it's drawn, it just doesn't appeal to me, and when people are calling the animation in a anime so great, and I look and all I see is stilted people with as little movement as possible, I get a bid mad.

The narrative in this might make you want to vomit, but not because it's like most anime. More because it's like an upside down rollercoaster (though ultimately even more fun, imo).

I wouldn't be able to tell, because there aren't any countries in the world except the US.

Every anime I've watched I haven't enjoyed and really have no desire to broaden my horizons on it because the anime art styles in general I find annoying to watch anyway. Everything i've seen though has just been too ridiculous/nonsensicle to get any enjoyment out of, or its aimed at teenagers, or both.

But then again i've never really been able to "get" any kind of Japanese media including anime, games, movies etc. It just doesn't sit right with me usually. Probably a cultural barrier.

Saying "I like/dislike anime" is roughly analogous to saying "I like/dislike movies". It's a medium, not a genre.

So.

I like some anime. I dislike other anime.

Holy shit. It does! Opening theme is actually tempting me to watch this.

I don't watch much TV at all, and I've watched 1 anime in full online. Apart from not finding them very interesting, all the anime websites I've found are just horrible, and I don't really think it's worth the hassle.

If you keep watching, I can't recommend the english dub enough. One of the few cases where the dub actively improves upon the original beyond just being more familiar and making it easier to watch

I dislike it. I can't tell you why, I just don't like it. I think it's the nature of most anime. Pardon me though, I have not watched that much of it as I simply find it annoying, but all of it that I have seen just tends to rub me the wrong way.

I like anime when it's done right. The problem is that most anime are just stupid, obnoxious, and don't deserve all of the praise that they get from the anime community. But when something like Baccano!, Now & Then, Here & There, and Durarara!! gets made I praise the ever-loving shit out of them.

There are plenty of anime that I don't care for, but there are quite a few that I enjoy quite a bit. I guess it just boils down to what the anime is. Stories about children going to school and having silly stuff bores me. Just like any television show about the "problems of being a teenager".

I like anime. My favorite movie is an interesting manga called Patlabor. What I hate about anime are its fans. I find they take all the fun of enjoying Asian cartoons.
