The thing is, I've come to terms in accepting that "anime" isn't a concrete genre that can be judged as a whole, at least not in my eyes. Primarily because I have a Japanese wife and we lived many years in Japan, and really - anime is just a blanket term like animation, not a single genre - in fact it's the same word but contracted and filtered through the Japanese languages extremely limited and simple sound structure. Yes, cultural and stylistic differences exist - and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a *huge* fan of some of those differences. I'm rarely attracted to anime, the only time I will go out of my way to see one is if it's by a filmmaker I have come to love - such as Miyazaki, Satoshi Kon (RIP), Mamoru Oshii or other Ghibli animators like Isao Takahata. Otherwise a friend has to poke me into seeing one. Usually, I judge them individually as I would any movie - I may not be the biggest fan of the animation styles (At least not always, Satoshi Kon and Miyazaki impress me sometimes.) and I rarely like "action" anime, at least not things like Dragonball or Naruto, but if the movie or programme is genuinely good and is relevant to my interests like Death Note (Thrillers and goth), Ghost in the Shell 1 & 2 (Philosophical sci-fi), Paprika (Dreams and psychology) or Mononoke Hime (mythology and history) then I like it.
So I guess I'll hit "like" but I do wish there was an "inbetween" option.
