In the same way that David Camerons 'worst film', Titanic, was also his most successful.
James, not David.

OT: Liked Half-Life 1's gun play, AI, and atmosphere. Liked Half-Life 2's pretty-much-everything-but-gunplay and different type of atmosphere. Disliked all of Episode 1. Kinda liked Episode 2. Would be more exited if VALVe did an original IP (as well as DOTA 2) instead of Episode 3 (there I said it).

Mark this the last time I ever talk about Half-Life on the Escapist and focus on some other game like...

Um...

PONG! Yeah, that was a good one.
You're right, I was thinking of the Prime Minister.
But wouldn't THAT be something.

I thought Half like was an ok game but I was more of an Unreal fan back then.

Half life 2 on the other hand... is the best game I have played even though I wasnt very hyped about it and played it a couple of years after relaese. Its the "Darkside of the moon" of gaming and still new FPSs cant come close.

Liked Portal but was dissapointed by Portal 2 and have played L4D for 5 minutes so not rellay a Valve fanboy like some.

As much as I fondly remember HL1 and 2... I would never say they're the greatest games ever or that they're "godlike." At the time, sure, but that's the nice thing about technology and games... they keep outdoing themselves. I think HL2 was better than Portal, though. Just saying.

The Half-Life 2 Episodes were never "meant to be part of 2". They were an alternative to Valve immediately starting to work on Half-Life 3.

The first game was great, a marvel of its time. The second game and subsequent episodes were weak, and had no sense of purpose. In the first Half-Life, you're just trying to survive amidst a facility overran by aliens and a military with orders to gun you down to cover everything up. In the second, you're... rebelling against a guy, I guess, for reasons they never quite bother to spell out. The entire feeling I got going through HL2 was "Why am I doing this, again? Because everyone told me to?"
You're trying to stop an alien occupation that ended up being one of many Unforeseen Consequences of your actions in the original game.

Well i'm not soley a PC gamer, but i've never understood the Half Life love.

The gameplay is slow and lacks any real tactics, and the story that everyone is so enamored with is no better than anything made by Bungie. Another thing I can't understand is why does everyone like Gordon Freeman? He's a blank slate that you project yourself onto, actually now I think I understand why he's so popular. There's nothing inherently wrong with the series, it's just sort of average.

I don't hate the series though, i'm mostly indifferent to it. The fanboys on the other hand.... well nobody likes fanboys.

"God of the PC Gamers?" Oh hell no. A good game? Yes, it is, but definitely not the best game ever created. Most of the Half Life series's major following comes from the Valve fanboys. I can understand why people like it, but there's so many problems with it that the game is more of a chore instead of an this amazing thing. Then again, I've never played the first one, just the second and the "Episodes."

I got bored with Half Life 1 after about 20 minutes of playing it. Half-Life 2 lasted about 3 hours before I stopped because I got stuck somewhere and wasn't really interested in continuing. (also bored with it I guess)

I am at episode 23 of Freeman's mind, and loving that series.

From what I played of them, I can safely confirm them both to be "good". I also know that they're not my kind of games. I can say without shame that puzzles and silent protagonists aren't my favourite things. :) But hate or dislike? Nah. I actually quite like what they stand for, and the .. 'mood' ? and design of the games was great.

Can I ask why you think this?

The Half-Life series is one of the five FPS that I like, so yes as far as I'm concerned it is the 3rd best FPS ever released.

I've loved the HL series since 1998, and am currently replaying the entire series. The set pieces are incredible, and the parts between those set pieces are also tons of fun. Story is great if you give it the attention it's due.

No, the fanboy following comes from the Half Life series.

I proffer myself as an example. Thought Half Life (1) was average. After playing the sequel I am now a fanboy.

Seriously though, the hell's up with all these people complaining that they don't know what they're supposed to be doing or why? It's one thing to dislike the game or find it boring, but how can you be so stupid not to understand the WHY of the story? It's all perfectly obvious, but you need it explained anyway?

I don't think there'll be many who say they don't like it. Hell, I've barely played the games in the series, and I really like it already.

Half life is like Woodstock. If you wasn't there back in the day, you won't understand the magic of it.

The series is really good; there were other games released around the same time as the original Half Life that pretty much did what it did, but Half Life, of course, gets the credit. I still blame the hype that was built up for Half Life for the fact that Shogo: Mobile Armor Division never got its much deserved sequel. I've never understood how Half Life is the greatest game ever and Shogo is mostly forgotten. It did the vast majority of what Half Life is famous for in 1998, and by all rights it should be Monolith that everyone worships, not Valve. That said, the Half Life series is excellent, and was revolutionary at the time of release -- just not as good or revolutionary as everyone seems to think it is or was.

The Half Life games give me motion sickness, so I don't like them.

I think they're complaining more about the lack of something resembling a minimap, lack of some sort of button you push where it tells you what objectives you have to accomplish, lack of a waypoint, etc. I mean, I found myself going in circles on that damned buggy a couple of times because I didn't know which way I was going. Speaking of the vehicles, the Mako was easier to control than that stupid dunebuggy. Hell, the boat was easier to control.

What's up with all the HL threads lately?
Anyway, I can't say that I particularly like the HL series. They're all very solid FPS games but I find the story very boring. I still enjoyed the games but by far not as much as many others I've played in my life.

I really wanted to like Half-Life, but for one reason or another I just couldn't get into it. My first experience was playing Half-Life 2 when I got The Orange Box. The first few levels left me thoroughly confused with regards to just what the hell was going on, and I stopped playing after experiencing one too many "where the hell do I go now?" obstacles.

Thinking that perhaps things would make more sense if I started at the beginning, I tried the first Half-Life next. Unfortunately that wasn't the case, as I still had no idea what was happening and I was still getting stuck trying to navigate the levels.

I could forgive the convoluted story, but the confusing level design is what turned me off to the series the most. It's never a good sign in an FPS if I have to use a walkthrough just to navigate a room.

Still, I wouldn't say I hate Half-Life. I just don't "get" it, that's all. Besides, I have to give the series credit where it's due. If Valve hadn't made the Half-Life series, there would probably have never been any Team Fortress 2/Left 4 Dead/Portal.
