The series is really good; there were other games released around the same time as the original Half Life that pretty much did what it did, but Half Life, of course, gets the credit. I still blame the hype that was built up for Half Life for the fact that Shogo: Mobile Armor Division never got its much deserved sequel. I've never understood how Half Life is the greatest game ever and Shogo is mostly forgotten. It did the vast majority of what Half Life is famous for in 1998, and by all rights it should be Monolith that everyone worships, not Valve. That said, the Half Life series is excellent, and was revolutionary at the time of release -- just not as good or revolutionary as everyone seems to think it is or was.
I feel the same, but it is the No One Lives Forever games, that I feel deserve more recognition. NOLF came out just after Half Life, but it was a far better game. It did however, have cutscenes that broke the first person perspective.

OT: I like Half Life and it sure did change story teling in FPSs, but it isn't the alpha and omega of PC gaming.
You probably know this, but NoLF and Shogo were made by the same people; NoLF even runs on a newer version of the Shogo engine. Monolith doesn't get half the credit they deserve :(

Don't forget Tron 2.0! While I'm not a big fan of Blood or Blood 2, about the only Monolith game I didn't enjoy was F.E.A.R., and that was their most succesful one.

I enjoyed F.E.A.R., but the multiplayer was a major letdown after spending so much of my childhood playing Shogo's multiplayer. I wish it were easier to find games from their back catalog; they've switched publishers a couple of times, and most of the rights are locked up so tight you can't get the games anywhere. F.E.A.R. and Shogo are the only two that are still available, to the best of my knowledge.

HL and HL2 were great, EP1 was less than stellar, and EP2 was as good as HL2. It is a great game taken in context. it is no COD2, It is nothing like BF2, completly different from Halo CE. the series is different from all other FPS. thats why i like it! it fills its own niche that no other FPS has done since.

*edit:

no other FPS has done since means all FPS since has been run and gun, twitch shooters. they took shooter from first person shooter and ran with it. HL/HL2 is a FPG. replace shooter with game because you can play it and not shoot anything except striders and the helos..

I definitely don't hate Half-Life. I do believe it's easily the most overrated series of all time though. Then again, I think all of Valve's games are massively overrated. TF2, Portal, Half-Life, and L4D are all mediocre at best in my opinion.
