Secondary school, two months of a biotech Bsc. and currently working an undergraduate degree in Wildlife Biology.

That might change if our lovely government decides that it's easier to pay unemployment benefit for thousands of dropouts by cutting academic grants [Ireland, by the way]. I think there's talk of abolishing grants for postgrads, which really goes against these plans they have for fostering scientific research.

I'm hoping there'll be some riots.

College dropout, however I learned more from these men than any school could EVER teach...

And if you think school counts for any KIND of critical education...

George Carlin - dropped out 9th grade
Bill Hicks - college dropout
Lenny Bruce - high school dropout
Steve Jobs - college dropout

George W. Bush attended and completed college!

I rest my case.
I do hope you realize that they're nothing more than a lucky few, right?

Because good fucking luck getting a decent job without finishing school.
The colledge dropout argument is quite silly. Lucky is the wrong word. These people worked hard and got to a good academic place, they used that to make contacts that offered them more than academia so they dropped out but they already got everything they needed out of schooling. In the case of Mark Zukerberg it was the contacts to make his company and in bill gates case the group of technical people required to invent microsoft. Dropping out with nothing to show for it then using that argument is contradictory. You have to know what you are doing, for those people even though they had a contacts and such dropping out was a gamble. If you don't have contacts dropping wont take you far.

Going on my last year of high school now, with any luck I'll start with nanotech at Lund University. Can't wait as everything seems awesome. I want to learn how the fuck they're planning on accelerating neutrons. Like in depth, not just "pull this lever". We'll see how far I go, but anyway... SCIENCE.

I really think college degrees are on their way out. Employers are complaining of a talent shortage, college graduates are complaining of low pay, and no one is really training anyone for real on the job experience... which is what employers really want.

I can honestly say I'm glad I didn't waste my time with higher learning, taking on student loans. Over several years, I did receive an associates degree from a community college when I could afford to pay for classes in cash.

I have a friend my age, closing in on thirty, and he's 40K in debt between loans and credit cards, and still works as a waiter. This is with him still living with his mom and dad, paying no living expenses and being handed money. Meanwhile, I busted my ass since high school and I make what he is going to make when he gets his degree, finds a job, etc.

By then, I'll be making more because I've learned how to just go out there and start doing.

There's something to actually talk about in yet another poll thread for ya.

Seems very vague and technical.
You could go to high school and college for years and not really get educated.

And on the opposite end of the spectrum, I know a guy who didn't go to college and hasn't been able to find a job that pays more than minimum wage where I'm making over $100,000 annually at my first job after getting a bachelor's degree.

Although, I am a special case, college degrees are very, very important at the moment.

A bachelor's? If it's not too private, could you tell us what the degree is in?

Now, please know that I am only pointing out the flaw in your argument. I make absolutely no judgements about you or your decisions to drop out. Hell, I was a college dropout at first. I quit after my 2nd year of failing grades because I didn't care. 5 years and many occupations later, I returned to school for an AA degree and am now completing a Masters degree.
I can spot the flaw in your arguement

You are getting a degree for the sake of getting a degree, you don't even know what you want to do with your life
Actually, not true.

I got a degree in Sociology (BA) as it interested me and I want to be an advocate for social justice and multicultural studies.

My MS is in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling, and guess what? I want to be a MFT.

Therefore, my degree is not simply for the sake of getting a degree. It's because to do what I want to do, I need said degree.

The poll options don't reflect my unique scenario :(

I got early entrance to my college, but I won't receive my diploma til I finish two semesters.

I went and got a degree so that I could be unemployed with a large student loan, rather than simply being unemployed. Yay.

GCSE's, A levels and half a degree.

Got turfed out of university because I disagreed with a professor.........now thats what I call petty academic nonsense.
Dam you baited me, what was it about.
During a history seminar, I saw something on a tv documentary and asked whether technically WW2 started in 1937 when Japan invaded China and that 1939 is a very western view on the war, so we debated it, as a group I might add, with me being the most vocal. A week or so later the prof hauled me before the dean saying id been very aggressive and had brought his ability to teach into question.

According to the university, its not a students place to question lecturers and discuss events......so I was thrown out. Complete bullshit if you ask me, I just feel that the guy was power mad.
I'm sorry but that simply can't be all there was to it. I believe your story but there must have been something else if you would be willing to disclose...
Nope, thats the extent of it. The guy couldnt take the fact that I brought something up that he couldnt explain away and over exaggerated events to the faculty board. I tried to appeal the decision but aaaaall power to the head of depaaartment
Those academics are so sickening, believe everything they do is better than anyone else, just arrogant. Good luck with your future
