ONE thread on a topic at any given time is enough. If you have something new to add add it to the thread itself.
Define "any given time" first.

Yes, it gets silly when there's half a dozen almost identical threads on the first page of the forum, but I'd say once it's off the first page it's fair game for a new thread
I have seen this happen to a thread that was ten minutes old before, so no. How about once it is five pages back, we can consider a new thread, provided the last post is more than 40 hours old.

I voted for the ball. There aren't enough threads about the joys of bouncy balls. Seriously people, go out to one of those little 50p dispenser thingys and get one. Hours of fun to be had! also playing catch with a ball and seeing how many throws you can do before it hits the ground. Or we could dress up as Batman and play with bouncy balls.

Yes, it gets silly when there's half a dozen almost identical threads on the first page of the forum, but I'd say once it's off the first page it's fair game for a new thread from the casual forum visitor, and by the third page it's fair game for the rest of us.

As to adding to long existing threads - personally once a thread hits 5+ pages of replies at most I'm very unlikely to look at it again unless it's a thread I started, and/or I get a reply notification in my inbox when someone quotes me. I'm sure that's true of lots of forum goers. So any comments tagged onto the end of a long thread are much more likely to go unread by most people, especially if they're only peripheral to the original thread topic.

Finally, what is or isn't on the 'same' topic? I started a thread today wondering why The Empire Strikes Back is more popular with fans than the original Star Wars. Does that belong on other recent Star Wars related threads? No, because although it's Star Wars related, it's got nothing to do with Episode 7, JJ Abrams or lens flare.

But one thread per topic seems a tad harsh?
Maybe one thread per 10 pages? It seems a bit fairer since peeps won't have to necro old threads.
But definitely some restrictions, seeing like 3-6 threads about the same thing on the same topic makes my head spin.

Apparently some clarification is necessary:
By "one thread on a topic at any given time" I of course meant that, as long as there is a thread on the EXACT same topic on the first two forum pages, the need for another thread about the EXACT same topic is somewhere close to zero.
(E.g. If there is already a thread about "guns don't kill people, people kill people", you don't need to start a thread about "guns kill people" or "guns might be dangerous" or "killing people with guns".)

If you however wish to start a new thread on a similar topic (e.g. the star wars example given by sixcess) that is totally fine.
But there's also the fact that people are far more likely to read the first post in the thread. So even if there's a discussion about the topic, the OP might not be setting a good course for the discussion.
For example, if someone starts the "guns don't kill people, people kill people" with an anecdotal story about how his sister got beaten up with someone who didn't have a gun and so this means people can hurt others without guns, there's room for someone making a thread about "guns might be dangerous", with a discussion about the safety measures gun owners should take.

I was kinda thinking about making a thread about sexism men face (because it's an issue people only tend to care about to counter feminist's arguments) I've seen the thread with the topic before, but it's generally been more whining about how if something bad happens to a man it's sexist, rather than any actual discussion on how sexism affects both men and women.

I searched for the forum for threads on that topic to see if there had been discussion, but all the comments about how men are oppressed and how rape is not bad if it's woman on man I just got depressed...

We need a Yahoo Answers type thing where when you go to make a new thread, it looks for keywords and suggests other threads that match. I imagine that most of the time people start new ones because they dont see the others that are currently open.

Well, after having contemplated the implications of the escapist forum trends, I have found a connection between the popular forum topics:
Drowning people's guns causes sexism.
I have meditated over this issue for a long time in a mountain far removed from civilization subsisting on a diet of raw mushrooms and pure spring water.

My reasoning is as follows:
Woof, Bacon, breasts, gender, guns.
AND BATMAN

The logic is infallible.

Clearly, all of these threads are part of a larger conspiracy planned by the templarilluminati that serves to not only oppress everyone but will also kill all guns and drown water.

So, we must stand together as one and fight back. We must not let the templarilluminati win.
So I say we fight for freedom by making NEW, interesting and funny threads.
No longer do we regurgitate the same topics forever and ever, ONE thread on a topic at any given time is enough. If you have something new to add add it to the thread itself.

I disagree with everything. I believe that we need MOAR threads about ponies, guns, drowning, and of course more bacon threads. In fact we should have new Forums made for each of these.

Also Batman is a whiny little momma's boy who never grew up.

Good god! Mark my words escapist, the world is headed for a shortage of meta humor if the you keep up your rate of consumption.

I voted to save the dog. A random person might as well be a bad person, why would I save him? The dog is important.

Oh shit, the Templar and Illuminati have combined? Not even an arsenal the size of Alex Jones' will protect you from that!

The good news is that this is completely impossible. Those two will never be able to agree on who's name goes first. Phew, that could have been awful.
They worked through their differences:
It changes every 2 days.
So one day you will be a templaruminati and the next day you could be an illuminatemplar.
They are very crafty...

The poll clearly follows the basic normal distribution often found in statistics, further supporting these findings here.

However I do feel I must disagree in part with your eventual conclusion.

Studying the ebb and flow in Escapist topics here I think it's pretty obvious that it is in fact the friendzone which causes gun control which eventually leads to, as you accurately pointed out, sexism.

Guns are not the issue people! Guns never did nothing to nobody (I'm not entirely sure what that means after three negations but I'm certain it's true). The issue lies much deeper!

Don't be fooled by easy and convenient explanations sheeple! Dig deeper! Find the truth!
Shhhh!
The friendzone is the final stage of the illuminatemplars plan. They want every man to be friendzoned by every woman he knows so that within only a few generations almost all of mankind will go extinct so that they may inherit the earth.
And only when they rule the earth will the friendzone finally be put to rest.
Muhahahahahahah.

Ehm
I mean

Er
The friendzone isn't a thing, ignore what I just said etc...

Serious mode on:

Then use some common sense. It's not a superpower.
If someone wants to start a debate on the topic of bouncy balls and starts it off by explaining why all green bouncy balls everywhere need to be put into solitary confinement and incinerated at the first chance you get, simply because green sucks, maybe you could try getting a civilized discussion going.
But if there are already 3 bazillion threads on one issue on the front page, maybe you don't need to create a new thread to voice your opinion and could just as well post in one of the existing threads.

I'm pretty sure the ending to Mass Effect 3 is somehow to blame for all of this.

Also people liking popular things that you just never quite got into due to your own personal preferences.

The bastards.

...Uh, huh? Okay. Whatever you say, OP. I usually don't mind the extra topics, but I would like to see something other than sexism and gun threads. Oh, and I voted for Attila the Hun, just cause.

Yeah, I liked Rainbow Dash in this episode too. A shame the show has been going down hill ever since EA took over.

The Illuminati are insulted by this accusation, even they are tired of this shit.

I said I'd save the dog, as the dog is unlikely accuse me of sexism and lacks the opposable thumbs required to operate a gun.

In seriousness, I just steer clear of any thread that seems to be about these sorts of things. Everyone just argues around in a circle, no one changes their point of view and in the end everyone ends up miffed at the situation.
Also, I loved the 'will also kill all guns and drown water' bit, it genuinely made me laugh.
