Stats, numbers and tactics.

I think that's why I love strategic RPGs, there's nothing better than setting up a combo that completely destroys an enemy.

Characters, tactics, story, setting. Almost in that order. I'd put tactics and story roughly equal.

Don't care about math, exploration or character customization [small](unless it's a WRPG, where I will need it because fuck you)[/small]. Moral choices are nice but optional, and the same goes for growth [small](although that one's a given in every RPG with leveling, namely all of them)[/small].

Actually, a lot of these are optional if the game manages to excel in another field. Resonance of Fate had a completely impenetrable story and a fairly grey/brown setting, yet it was a lot of fun because the characters were good and the combat was incredibly addictive.

EDIT: That's not to say I have anything against exploration or character customization. It just isn't what I like the most in an RPG.

i like a good story, building a character, and stats/tactics pretty much equally. i'm very much a min-maxer so stats are important to me. in fact, for a multiplayer game, stats are more important to me than story (i'd argue that in multiplayer, story is irrelevant).

To be perfectly honest, I looked at every option on the poll, and said, "Hell yeah, I like that in an RPG!" but then I took a minute to think and realised, "Wait a second, for all these features I love, I can think of plenty of 'RPGs' that I've loved that didn't have this!"

RPGs are a big, big genre. I don't know, maybe I'm just easy to please, but I like having variation in the genre. I like having RPG/FPS hybrids like Fallout 3 and turn-based like Fallout 2 or Final Fantasy. I can think of plenty of flaws in all these games as well as other RPGs but if I hated every single game that had a flaw in it the only game I'd still be able to play is Abe's Exoddus.

So, yeah, in short:

What they said. I like all these things in games, but the absence of any one of these isn't a dealbreaker for me. I can think of plenty of games I thought were excellent even if they don't have some of the specific features I would say I love most.

I like my RPGs like I like my woman: hot, blonde, and down to f...wait what are we talking about again? Hmm, maybe this analogy doesn't work that well.

I love having the freedom to go wherever I want in RPG, and to go there when I want.

My favorite aspect is probably the freedom to do anything you want and the ability to explore a rich world.

FO3 had a terrible and short main story. I loved the game though. After a bunch of mods that made the world come to life and let npc factions have their own interaction I enjoyed just roaming and doing the side missions.

I still like more story driven/linear games but when it comes to what I spend most of my time in, it's always big expansive worlds.

I voted other:
Being able to play in the shoes of someone completely different, the more fantastical (fantasy) the better.

I like them over-easy with some cheese and a hint of tobasco sauce.

I like my RPG only one way: on pen and paper. And also the interacting with other people aspect of it helps as well.

For me, an RPG should be complete freedom with the character. Appearance, skills, personality, make decisions that affect you and everyone around you, that sort of stuff.

I really don't get the stats and numbers crowd, the ones who believe that any game that also employs some skill in combat breaks it from being an RPG and that's why anything Bioware puts out is just a glorified shooter (and other similar comments). It might just be because I never really liked tabletop gaming but, that just sounds really really dull. It's essentially buying a game and then watching it be played for you. I like upgrading my stats as much as the next guy but if I don't want to be in direct control of the situation I'll just watch a film.

I HATE the crap Bioware shits out with every release, I prefer open world games like Bethesda makes.
Disclaimer: I am assuming you're speaking about Oblivion.
Yeah, isn't it awesome to roam the world of the same 7 npcs, level-scaling monsters (which means that a few rats can easily challenge an archmage), being a glorified postman (fetch quests), killing stuff with the same four spell animations and apparently suction cup-tipped arrows (how else would it be sticking out of an argonian's head without killing him?) or stumbling through the abysmal main story. Yes, I can see why you prefer Beteshda.

OT: All of the above, although I HATE! LOATHE! DESPISE! Black and white, good versus evil morality (so just watch that point) and the CHOSEN ONE cliche. By god, do I hate "THE CHOSEN ONE!!!" - and what makes it so bleeding annoying is that all the 'chosen ones' are guys anywhere from 10-25 with short brown/black hair, no/little facial hair, a non-existant personality, a vapid love interest, a sword, daddy issues up the bum and an ugly tendency to be complete and utter squeaky clean Gary Stus (or worse, impossibly whiny dipshits). I mean, really, check the list: Harry Potter. Rand al'thor, Frodo, most of shia labeouf's characters, luke skywalker, Starkiller, cloud strife, disney's hercules(the myth's version is a bearded man with psychopathic tendencies) as well as countless other fantasy/sci fi/protagonists. A lot of protagonists also fit the aforementioned description without being explicitly the CHOSEN ONE, since that is almost a fantasy-exclusive trope.
What makes that annoying is that CHOSEN ONE usually = viewpoint character.
Sorry, went on a tangent there.
I also believe that an RPG doesn't necessarily have to have numbers 'n shit (although skill trees are appreciated).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but "RPG" stands for "role-playing game", as in a game that lets you play whatever role you see fit (which is why I don't think a lot of JRPGs aren't "real RPGs", whatever the hell that means, but that's neither here nor there).

That said, I prefer character customization. I'm one of those players who "directs" the course of the game; it isn't my story. It's that of the character I made - I'm just steering him/her along towards the end-game. That's how I like to play.

Hmm... I just noticed there's no real option for what I just wrote, and that my answer wasn't really consistent. Ah well... 'tis life I guess.

There wasn't an option just for gameplay? I like Planescape's story over System Shock's, but SS2 is the better game because its gameplay was actually nerve-wracking.

I like games that can make me give a shit about the characters. I absolutely despise games with characters that are so bland and one-dimensional(with the exception of Duke Nukem). Games like Dead Space, Metroid other M, and Gears of War are good examples of bad character development. Usually games like Valkyria Chronicles, Heavy Rain, and Persona 4 can make you empathize with the characters and really tug at your heartstrings. Here's a re-enactment of me during certain scenes of those games.SPOILERSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSZZZZ!"NOOOoooo ISARA!!", "NOOOoooo MADISON!!", and "NOOOoooo NANAKO!!".
