I'd give the assholes jail time, perhaps be charged some sort of fine, and prohibit them to ever use computers ever again without strict monitoring.

Maybe go the government rout and force em to work with security companies and such so their skills can be put to use in preventing or slowing down this sort of nonsense.

I hate whoever did this as much as the next person, but lynch mobbing and murder are rather extreme for something like this. Death is just too extreme when you can punish them in a far more useful manner.

This disaster has affected me and it annoys me a lot, but I wouldn't do anything to him. I'd put him in jail for a few years, but that's it. Sure, he's an asshole but people have just got to chill.

They show me to the table, a vast variety of the tools of their trade appear on the table, knives, bludgeons, guns etc.

Jail is most likely what will happen though if I had my way and if everyone turned a blind eye to what I did then I would do what I've always wanted to do.

Out of curiosity what would be the real-world punishment for this?

It's a non-violent crime, so far we've not seen any evidence that a profit has been made from it. So pure data-theft, like breaking into a shop and stealing their customer records. Anyone know what the sentence is for that?

I suppose breaking and entering would get you a couple of years, data-theft I have no idea so I'm going to guess another couple of years, maybe 5 years in prison total?

I'm tempted, because of the nature of the crime to tack on a 10 year period in which they can't use a computer but that's so harsh they'd never be able to work again, it would be a life-ruiner for a tech expert.

Imprison them for life. When you calculate even 6 months prison sentence for each credit card stolen and give them consecutive sentences they will be in prison for far longer then their natural born life.
