Depends on what I'm in the mood for, but after the slew of overly serious games we've had these past years, I'm definitely interested in some more tongue and cheek.
If you liked Twin Peaks, and are in the mood for bizarre survival horror, go with Deadly Premonition for sure.
Yeah, I saw Spoony's review. Maybe I'll check it out.

And I LOVE Twin Peaks. Well, up to about episode 15 anyway.
Yeah, Deadly Premonition IS a terrible game, but also the most lovable and enjoyable of 2010.
It's also 20 bucks.

Humor isn't necessary but, I would prefer to have some in there. Like, it's fun to murder tons of dudes but, it's more fun to do so while wearing nothing but panties and a Donald Duck mask...with a waffle-iron

This made me think of a game for PS2 and I can't remember the title for the life of me. You are a girl who gets pulled into some kind of dark fantasy world and you get the ability to morph into different forms for combat. Each form is a demon and has different advantages (high speed with lightning, really strong with fire). There is a gargoyle who is your buddy and helps you solve puzzles.

That's besides the point, but back to OT what I noticed is that while the gameplay was nothing special and the plot wasn't that great the interactions between gargoyle and girl are hysterical. I mean really, truly hysterical like when she accidentaly breaks his ear off with a rock and he gets mad at her, "You broke off my ear! I can't put it back on!" They have dialogue like a really good buddy cop movie.

I kept playing that game just because it was so funny yet was billed as a serious action game for some reason.

Side note - Anybody remember the title of the game I'm talking about? It's driving me nuts now.

Was it Kameo: Elements of Power? That was an early 360 game, as I remember, but maybe there was a PS2 version?

No, it wasn't Kameo it was on PS2 and didn't get a lot of press when it came out. I literally ended up playing it because there was nothing else to rent and I thought it looked passable.

I also remember that the premise is the girl is in a coma while she adventures around the fantasy world, so when you die she dies in the hospital bed. The look and feel of the characters almost made me think of The Dark Crystal movie, dark and creepy but puppety enough to not be truly scary.

I'm going to be obsessed now, darn it...

I think that probably puts me in the "Pants!" category.

What game was that? Just that statement make me as curious as a hyperactive squid staring at a cookie jar!

For me, it's best to be either over-the-top funny, or little tiny bits of humor in a serious game. Try to make the humor either stand out, or make the entire game humorous. If it's serious, but with too much humor, one harms the other.

Recettear [http://store.steampowered.com/app/70400/], a game about a girl who runs an RPG item shop to pay off a loan her missing father skipped out on so that a fairy won't repossess her house.

...no, seriously.

I like the game to have a sense of humor about itself, but I don't want the humor to be the driving force behind the game.

See games like Portal, Fallout, Halo (don't tell me Halo doesn't have a sense of humor, have you ever listen to the grunts, or checked out any of the easter eggs?).
I didn't mean Halo wasn't funny, just that it's not a particularly goofy game. There isn't a swearing weasel with goggles.

Overall, I would rather just have a good atmospheric game that takes itself seriously. However, humor could always be found somewhere in a game. The Mass Effect games were great at doing this.

I love you, it was Primal! I award you +1 internets, a cookie and a big stack of pancakes with extra syrup.
But...but...I said it first...

But there are some ones (like Batman: Arkham Asylum) that are amazing the way they are, and humour would probably ruin it.
It's true, humor in a game featuring the Joker would totally throw off the moo-wait what?
