It really depends on the game and how it's executed, games which are parodies are supposed to be full of ridiculous things to poke fun at the stuff they parody.

On the other side are games like CoD are supposed to be serious since they're about serious things- it really depends on the atmosphere of the game.

Just saying all games have to include humor or be deadly serious detracts from the point of games that are meant for the opposite.

On a less philosophical side, I voted Pants! :p

Both. It depends on the game. I loved the monkey island games, Sam and Max and day of the tentacle. But when I play silent hunter, for example, I don't need the lognes monster doing the boogie in front of my persicope.

Primal!!!!! I thought I was the only person to play that XD
I love you, it was Primal! I award you +1 internets, a cookie and a big stack of pancakes with extra syrup.
But...but...I said it first...

*sniffles in a cardboard box all pancakeless and alone*
I confirmed the post but for some reason I never got a message about you quoting me so I didn't know you got it first!

You can have +1 internets, a cookie and some waffles with strawberries and whipped cream to make up for it. ;)

overall my favorite joke in a serious game has to be the famous mass effect 2 qoute "im commander shepard and this is my favourite store on the citadel" just because its unintentionally hilarious that you can do it to both stores and get a discount plus everytime you walk in you get to hear that line. I do hope that in mass effect 3 they actually include it as a little joke.

my favourite comedic game has to be battlefield bad company 2 just because of some of the random stuff you can do in multiplayer puts a smile on your face.

I really appreciate when a "serious" game (or otherwise serious situation in a game) is unintentionally funny.

I prefer games that don't take themselves too seriously. That doesn't mean it can't be a serious game though, MGS is fairly serious but what matters is that it isn't afraid to crack a few jokes occasionally.

I like games like MGS, where humour is certainly not in charge, but does occasionally pop up. Some of the codec calls in the MGS series are just hilarious. But generally, I do prefer more serious games. Not COD, of course. Think, more like Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, Heavy Rain and Dead Space.
It worked for awhile, I agree, but after Psycho Mantis showed up I just couldn't take any part of it seriously. Once the fourth wall goes down you can't put it back up.

OT: I don't reall have a preference for either; I prefer consistency.

So that's where that got started. I wondered about the whole Shepard's favorite thread on the internet thing.

It's probably because I didn't initially quote you. Your post showed up after I'd already posted; I edited my post after I looked up the game. I guess edited-in quotes don't send the alert message.

BUT IT'S TOO LATE FOR YOUR SWEET BRIBERY NOW.

Why is every one of these sorts of threads so absolutist?

Let me put it this way: I have played very, very few 'comedy' games that were actually funny. To a large extent, I think this is due to technological limitations ? No One Lives Forever had a very funny script that was usually ruined by an engine that just wasn't capable of moving the cutscenes along at a comic pace; the comic timing was always way off. These days, we don't get very many funny games precisely because those limitations have soured people on comedy games in the past, even though the technology for well-blocked, well-animated and well-timed comedy is now widely available.

Have you ever listened to the radio on The movies?

1920 - 1940 is a posh guy ( I think hes also gay)
then its jus a load of anti communist propaganda
then its a hippie
then its some random teenager.
You forgot the "Iceman" from the mid-70s, and the New Age-y chick from the 1990s on.

OT: I like humor only if it's appropriately timed (i.e. Portal)

Sacred 2 would be pretty boring if it wasnt basicly a parody of RPG games.
For instance, inquisitor looks pretty much like emperor from Star Wars, he has ability to shoot lightning from his fingers snd some of his helmets kinda resemble Darth Vaders mask. And yeah, there are some lightsabers in the game.

I found RUSE to have great humor (humour). Well sadistic humor (hurmour)such as, Infantry charging your base just to be intercepted by 1000 missles smashing into them.

Metal Gear Solid and Fable finds a good balance to these.

First play through, I usually do it for the story and how serious it can be. I want a gritty, epic feeling.

Second time, I do everything, so I come across the silly things, but I have a completionist mindset, so I can't enjoy it.

Third time is strictly for the lulz.

Portal, Borderlands, and Brutal Legend I loved because of how funny they were.

Halo's grunts or whatever are about as funny as random sarcastic remarks in any of your generic war games (not that funny).
