Hype... I remember when I bought the Galactic Edition of Spore from a preorder due to hype. It gives it a chance, but doesn't make it any better. Let's take a look at the hype for Modern Warfare 2, shall we? It hasn't been released yet and already I know tons of people who have already preordered or plan on buying it. They don't know if it's good or bad yet, they're deciding out of hype. Modern Warfare 2 could suck a lot and get bad reviews, but people will still buy it because it's been hyped so much.

Depends on the game, really. A shitty game could be hyped to hell and taken in as a good game because of it, or a brilliant game could get similar hype and become a letdown.

I usually never get too hyped about games but when I do it's never a 6 ton gorilla of gaming I give the somewhat smaller titles a chance. The last game I hyped was Farcry 2 and the next game I am hyping is Borderlands. I won't be mad if I'm disappointed. I won't go pointing fingers at the devs. I'll know it's my own fault for getting overly excited about a title I've never even touched and picking it up first day without any insight as to how good it is other than hype.

The promise of a hat is what drew me here. I see now that I will probably not get a hat. You sir, have deceived me, and I shall not forget.

I notice how, in Polls, if you ever put a funny option like "where's my hat", people will choose that no matter their belief or ideas

Luckily, i missed the hype of the first so it remains one of my favourite games.
This is what happened with me and Spore. All I saw was a light summary about all the stages, so all I saw was what I got. So, I really liked Spore.
Unfortunately I killed that with too much hype and character creating before it even came out. I've been thinking of going back to it lately though so with lowered expectations i might enjoy it a little more.
certain parts of Spore had to be culled because they made it unplayable, other parts couldnt work properly. its more a glorified 3D modeler

Good for game makers, bad for customers. I call the 'thread' thing and want my free hat.

If i don't get my free hat. . . I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.

Hype can bring little games into the spotlight, like Scribblenauts.
They can also diminish the game experience, like the Fable games.
Now, may I have my hat now?

when people make out a good game to be GREAT

it makes people disapointed, making the game bad.

im afraid thats the way it has to be xD

dont judge games by what people say about it, judge it for urself

oh, and i expect my hat in 10 working days.

Hype that doesn't promise blood and titties doesn't get my attention, that's why I'm looking forward to Assassin's Creed 2.

So make with the hat!

New poll.
Do threads designed purely to get badges do more harm than good?

It depends on how good the game is. Sometimes, it does wonders.

Othertimes, it makes the game less enjoyable (I'm looking at you, Scribblenauts!).
