You, sir, have tricked me. Give me a damn hat before I storm your house with my trained polar bear, my bullet proof parka and my musket.

Hype is only bad if it's overused to such an extent when it has people believing so much in how "good" it will be -cough-Lionhead-cough- they would perform backflips to get it...and then the next morning when playing the game they realised what they had just done for this "game" -cough-Sega-cough-

Now,
Where's my hat?

I think there's a key difference between hype and lying. A game can be hyped up without actually betraying what's in it - like E3 trailers or opening movies. Like the Assassin's Creed 2 trailer. If Ezio can do all that stuff in game, I'm going to love it. What I find bad about hype is when they start plugging misleading features of the game that actually aren't that prevalent, as in Fable II where they talked about being able to change the world and see the impact your actions had. No, that was really badly done in the actual game. They should have hyped different features.

Every game needs some advertising or it won't be noticed and word of mouth will be too slow to get the word around. Too much hype though just ruins things when a game inevitable fails to live up to massive hype.

I still hold up the belief that despite all the disapointments and fanboy/hater flame wars hype is still ultimatley beneficial. Because it helps to put gaming in the spotlight, one anticipated future release and it gets a lot of people interested which in turn makes big shot investors realise that gaming really is a good place to invest vast amounts of money which in turn allows for small developing companies to retrieve vast sums of money to help creat some truly great games. I still think that hype for Halo 3 was one of the main reasons 2007 was a great year for the game industry, simply because you get a lot of people interested in gaming and you allow the mainstream media to start giving gaming recognition around the world and for developers to put out their products and have people snap them up.
Hype has always been a selling point behind all forms of entertainment and art, without it then no form of entertainment or art would at all be successful.

Hype doesn't help a game in my case since I never pay attention to it and go in with no expectations.

Sometimes hype pays off, and a game does need some degree of it in order to get people to notice and buy it. However, there is such as thing as too much hype.

Peter Molyneux the master of hype, has been bitten twice by this and one has to wonder if he simply has terrible luck, or hyping a game up is asking for trouble. People gave PM the benefit of the doubt after Fable, but he went and blew it again causing his credibility to dip even further.

Problem with over-hyping is that you can swiftly go from Hero to Zero - ask John Romero.

hype is mostly a bad thing, it makes games dissapointing when they come out, making us hate it more than we should.
