No. I refuse to accept people choosing to sound ignorant out of sheer laziness. In a fast-paced game, shortcuts and typos are perfectly reasonable, and even in a forum setting, it's unfair to judge someone for splitting an infinitive or not proofreading. But people who simply don't care enough to try and communicate correctly don't deserve respect or tolerance.

As an aside, I am constantly impressed by the flawless English of most of the non-native speakers on this Forum and in our IRC channel. More often than not, I have to be reminded that someone is from Portugal or Brazil or Croatia, because their use of the language is so spot-on.

Oh god, the title of this thread scared me, I thought you actually typed like that, (i couldn't see the part that said "mild rant" on the thing on the side with the threads with the most recent posts). Unlike many, I try my best to use proper grammar, diction, spelling and punctuation on the internet. The rules of english still apply, and I don't want future historians thinking that our societies messages look like someone smashed their palm over and over onto a keyboard.

Oh God yes. I hate\ that excuse. Since when does the fact you're on the Internet mean you can just talk like you've randomly smashing your keyboard?

I mean, sure, some mistakes are okay (especially if it's not your mother tongue), but sometimes it's just people being lazy. And obnoxious.

The internet, fourteen million apostrophes, all in the wrong place.

I think Jeremy Clarkson said that, he's not far off.

For me it's the equivalent of using script to write faster. Normally I'll use complete sentences and spell things properly but sometimes it doesn't matter to do so so I don't.

When on the internet, it is not particularly important to watch your syntax or grammar, however, if you wish to be taken seriously, it is suggested that you do so.

While clarity may not be affected much by the lack of an 'o' or a misplaced apostrophe, when using contractions, it shows a certain lack of care for the opinion one is making an attempt to express. If one does not feel strongly about the issue, it isn't a big deal but if you wish to do well in an online discussion relevant to a strong opinion you hold, one absolutely -must- pay attention to their use of written form.

I love seeing "sorry for the language, I'm from <insert non English-as-a-primary-language-country-here>" and until that point, not having any idea that the person wasn't from the Western Hemisphere.

The bit at the end of this clip, that's me on an almost weekly basis in Sydney. Except I'm not Russel Peters.

I always try to spell and use grammar correctly. Mistakes do happen, though. But whatever, a typo or two won't hurt anyone.

I don't mind as long as clear communication is conserved. Generally though, my reading speed really slows down when people start to go a bit overboard.

I see decent grammar and spelling as being a form of respect. If you've got the time to post in a forum, you've got the time to construct a proper sentence. On the other hand, there's always circumstances where this form of respect gets a pass, in favor of efficiency. FPS games without microphone functionality, for instance.

Personally, beyond FPSes, I only use shorthand in texts, mostly because I'm not using an iDevice, like all of you privileged meanies. :( My boring old Samsung flip phone makes it so I've got to press each key THREE TIMES just to get to ONE letter. When all you want is to give a reminder to a friend concerning directions or a specific address, this is freaking murder.

So yes, I do use shorthand in these instances. Beyond that, I spend too much time writing as it is to even tolerate the use of shorthand in a serious thread. As a role-player, this is particularly distracting to me.

Yes, i try, i just can't make it sometimes. If you think that's obnoxius there's a trend here in wich teens repit vocals, i haave noo iideea why, liike thiis (though pronuciation in english would vary more because of that).

I put a bit of effort to try and write things like a proper person. Sometimes I make spelling mistakes and that happens to everyone no matter who you are, so I can let spelling slide. I also have a tendency to miss out words.

But...
if u tlk lyk dis evry time u get close 2 da keyboard and not taking the piss?

I will hunt you down and kill you.

I enjoy that as well.

Also, I may be weird, but I force my phone to learn my odd words so that I can still speak in my particular brand of oddness even through texting! And much fun was had by all.

[sup]Well, I had fun at least.[/sup]

This is the Escapist. Utopia of grammar nazis. The answer is very clear.
But yeah, I find it difficult to talk to people who type like that. A lot of the time I can't even figure out what it is they're supposed to be saying. Comma usage, people! It saves lives!

How shall I put this?

[HEADING=1]I'm a writer.[/HEADING]

Went to college to learn my trade, and now the only reason there wouldn't be proper grammar or spelling is if I were perpetuating a form of expression for the sake of amusement and/or entertainment.

Hello.

While I do believe that spelling and grammar are very important parts of a balanced internet experience.

That being said nit picking small grammatical errors, and then calling said person stupid because of it, is just as bad. I can assure you you have probably seen it on the forums before where someone who disagrees with another person's opinion then uses a tiny error to try and prove they are somehow a complete idiot regardless of the validity of the opinion.

I admit though I feel very sorry for people who use that excuse, to not at least minimize there errors, for example the built in spell check on Google chrome is a godsend, or the spell check from Google toolbar.

Hello.
Congratulations that must of been challenging, i'm not exactly a bad writer but i'm nowhere in the league for creative writing. Must have been quite a challenge, or at least I think so. I guess it's a bit different if you enjoy what you do.

It's absolutely a person's right to spell poorly on the Internet. It's also my right to look down on them for it. All you have here is your words, and if they look unintelligent, So do you.

The internet should be like Sanctum where when you type something, Microsoft Sam repeats it back to you so that you know precisely how stupid you sound.

But then people would spam JOHNMADDENJOHNMADDENCHEESECHEESEROLFROLFROLFROLFROLFCOPTER
Ahem:
OT: If u typ lk dis thn u r rly bd.

But if you type like this then you are quite the fine gentleman! If you use 2 once in a while then that's OK. But if you type like you are typing on a phone missing most of it's keys then you should really get some better typing skills.
