First off is it Empirical or Imperial? Cause nothing against you, but we should be calling it the correct name it has. Or doesnt it matter?

Anyway, Lets go with your example. you're using a standard ton, and it was pointed out to me that a metric ton is slightly over 2200 lbs. So youre starting standard, when you could just start metric. Dont ask me how that works, I learned a a ton was 2000 lbs regardless of standard or metric. Just feel I should point that out.

besides, I dont know, maybe its just me, but I like the extra work. thats an exercise and math, and the more challenging, the more beneficial. and it keeps you sharp. I've found that when you use metric you get lazy. And most things like grams to ounces are usually used in weight (which I personally like better in standard for over an oz, but in metric when under. I.e. capsules of medicine). ANd most things that do need the conversion have both Standard and Metric measurement (baking for example).

But you are saying that we as americans should change. And you're saying the sooner the better. But why do we need to change? why cant americans just keep going, just keep converting. Perhaps I'm looking too large scale, but then we run the precedent that will cause a change in currency, giving us all once central currency because it would be easier then converting money. Or one language cause its easier then translating. It leads to a centralized world, the vision and purpose of any genocide, which any humane human agrees is wrong. There would be no race, there would be no Europe/Asia/Americas/Australia. We would be one thing, obeying one rule, using one currency. There would be no option for change or variation. And when there is, it would just happen again.

I'm not saying turning everyone to Metric will do that, but its a step to one unified world that doesnt have variation or different or what makes us us. But again, I may be going to large scale, and like I siad, I like to use metric, I just dont see the need to change completely. Americans should be taught Metric only when it is necessary, and allowed to use Standard whenever else they want. And most classes where you need metric, you are taught it anyways.
So because you think it's LESS efficient and requires more work, you say it's better? I can think of far better ways to work the brain, that don't include potentially redundant calculations.

In my two examples I used exclusive units. The first was ONLY standard, the second was ONLY metric. I did this specifically to prove one system is less efficient than the other.

After that, your jump in logic is ridiculous. Simply adopting a system of measurement will not create a "slippery slope" of adopting everything we come across.

However, lets say your idea of adopting a universal language and currency is correct. The genocide you mentioned is a VIOLET means creating a unified world. Willfully adopting an idea is the polar opposite of such a crude idea. Who said sharing currency and language makes us essentially sheep that follow one voice? If I try my best to work with everyone in a shared culture, why would that make me evil? Why would that eliminate all of the races in the world? It doesn't.

No option for change or variation? Many countries only have one national language, currency, and measurement system. Do you honestly think those countries can't change? You must be insane. Your leaps in logic are beyond bountiful. Unless you're assuming sharing the same way of measuring something automatically equates into a complete dictatorship. In which case, I couldn't possibly argue logic or reason to you.

I'm not trying to be a condescending dick, but your opinions reflect something of a headstrong teenager. You can't see the true "big picture" and lack a scope of how the world really works. That or you're arguing just to argue. But hell, if that's what you think, I'm not going to try and change it.

i propose a compromise, have the written measurements (like on roadsigns and so forth) in both imperial and metric

example:
boston
2 miles
3.2 km

and to those who say that it would be too difficult to switch from one to the other, australia was able to do it by gradually phasing it in over a period of years, and we're just as stubborn and set in our ways as americans are, so if australia can do it, than the US has no excuse as to why it can't

In Britain, engineers, scientists and manufactures use the metric system, and the general population use both but there is a bias towards imperial measures. Temperature is always given in Celsius, whilst when describing the dimensions of ones body, we use Imperial. Although, a Briton's body weight is not weighed in lbs but stone instead (I'm around 11 stone). Some of the Imperial measures we use are different to the Americans. In my opinion, i much prefer metric because it is more logical- hopefully there will be a shift towards metric some time soon.

I don't like it either but I'm kind of stuck with it until the government wants to go through and change all it official documents and retrofit the entire country with metric equivalent stuff.

Also, that first line makes me think of this:

you say this like its a question. Metric is odviously better, but thats not the issue. the issue is that #1: some people don't want to learn, #2: many people aren't accustomed to it, #3: many things in US are designed around imperial units, making it both difficult and expensive to change. and lastly, #4: people naturally resist change.

I have no idea why I do this, but a lot of people still do. New Zealand converted to metric in the 1960's and I use metric for everything except height. If I have a distance it is in metres or kilometres. If I have I'm pouring fuel it is in litres. However if someone asks how tall I am, I will say about six foot. I have no idea why.

I use miles for distance, stone for weighing humans, and feet etc for height/length.

Metric is awesome.
I don't have any concept of a yard, pound, ounce, Ferinheight or gallons.

We still use MPH though for some reason...

Because we are America, and we use whatever the fuck we want because we can.
If you disagree you clearly hate freedom and are a communist, socialist, or some evil combination of the two.
This needed to get quoted.

You damn Nazi's. We the American people will always reject the metric system. Because the commies use it, and we hate the commies.

Metric is better in every way, and everyone should use it. I think we can all agree on that. But as with time zones, it'll be hard to implement this not really necessary, but very beneficial, change without something forcing it. Unfortunately you can't just count on people being smart enough to know their own good.
BTW, Metric is universally used within scientific fields.

I'm tired of hearing this stupid argument.

For the United States to switch to metric, Every factory and manufacturer would have to switch to metric at the exact same time for it to work. If one part of the manufacturing process went to metric and the other used standard measurements, then the entire production would be off. It's not that most of us don't want to switch. It's simply an impossible task.

On top of that every piece of machinery in the United States that uses Standard measurements would have to be destroyed, since it would be impossible to find tools to fix them.

So in short, yes metric is very nice and is more exact; however, for us to do so would mean the destruction and obsoletion of the largest amount of equipment in the world overnight.
You do realize that the equipment would at most need to be relabeled, right? I mean, the devices don't change, the sizes don't change. You just need to fix gauges and scales. And even then you don't need everything to happen overnight.

The imperial system is lame. Some sort of weird measurement units you just wouldn't come up even if drunk and on drugs. Ever.

They should just start teaching it properly at school for them to see how many times simpler it is.

Also, the frack are the people talking about throwing away equipment and an apocalyptic problems of mass destruction? All devices can be calibrated. Most recent ones electronically... in a second... you don't need to throw anything out.

Problem imperial?

First, oh fuck, stop mistaking one country for a whole continent. I'm pretty sure the whole LATIN AMERICA uses the metric system. Even Canada is quite fond of the metric system. It's just the stupid US.
When people say 'The Americas' they are lumping the two continents together.

When people say 'North America' they mean the top continent, when they say 'South America' they mean the bottom one.

When people say 'America', they are not lumping both continents together- that would be saying 'The Americas'.

When people say 'America', they mean the USA. That's just how it is.

Metric all the way..

Even though I was brought up in the 1990s in England where metric and imperial systems were having one last massive dispute and so I know both systems..

Metric is hellishly easy.. thats why I like it, thats why British cars should use KPH and why Imperial measurements should die..

And the fact that time is similar to the Imperial system is not an arguement, our time is broken down into 24 hours a day and 365.25 days a year because it suits the existing Earth rotation and angle cycles.. we can't change those so human timing is good the way it is, however Imperial measuring is just a silly by-product of human timing systems..
