See, back in November, I started going out with a girl in the year below me at school - and certain people started to call me a pedophile. NOT KIDDING.
This has been going on for four months, and no one has ever said nor done anything in that time. To be honest, I only just mentioned it to my parents (while in floods of tears etc); mainly because I'd hoped that the people doing this would see sense and stop. And they haven't

The aforementioned events made me into a gibbering wreck, unable to enjoy anything.
All methods of entertainment left me hollow. I saw the errors in my favourite movies, the bad edits, the plot holes. I tried to play Monopoly - I lost within half an hour (and I kick ass at Monopoly) Last month, even videogames were losing their lustre for me.

So, yeah. I just thought I should bring this to the board of the Escapist, a collection of people who I view as mature enough to evaluate this issue. I'm not neccesarily asking for advice - more your opinion on what occured.

Okay I admit to some " the younger one is" a year or two can seem like a bigger difference. Then you look at older and older couples, those who are married are often 5 to 10 years apart, I know of a few couples 18 years apart.

I'm sorry this is the second time in five minutes I have pointed out your ignorance but the legal age for sex in the UK is 16.

This means a 17 year old will be seen as a peadophile by the law, if they have sex with someone who is 15 or younger... This is referred to as Satutory Rape.

A load of jerk offs, obviously ignorant of the meaning of a word are probably just acting like twats because they once saw a newspaper headline like "pedophile rapes youngster, laughs afterwards, he is the truest definition of evil, we are justified to lynch him, more on page 4" and now they turn their ignorance and media inspired programming into bullying, which is making you depressed, which in turns deprives you of joy.

It sounds very much like you need to hand them a fucking dictionary, get the authorities involved if it's bugging you that much or something along those lines.

Jeez sounds like my school, except mine has more Leb gangstas. I'm not too good with advice, but if it were too happen to me in my school my friends would all give me the same advice: harden the fuck up. But we all go to different schools, so its likely it'll never happen in my school since people start cheering you on if you get a girlfriend. And I don't think they would go around call people pedophiles either.

But seriously that's just plain immature. If it's really affecting your life then you need to tell someone who can do something about it.

Just tell them that you like'em young. 1 year age difference is nothing. Besides, just take it as a joke, i've had a girlfriend 6 years older than me, does that make her a cradle robber? No, just means that there's an age difference. (I'm well over the legal age, just for clarification)

Don't worry about it man. They're just jealous you have yours and they don't. Yes, age seems like a big thing in highschool, but it's not. It only feels that way because of a standardized "grade" or "level" system.

Yeah ... Been there, done that mate. And it wasn't for just one thing. It was for everything I did. And I turned out juuuust fine. The voice in my head said so.

I'm guessing you're below eighteen. And people below eighteen. Well, many of them haven't developed a brain yet, it may seem. I talk out of experience. They'll stop it at some point. They'll realise it's no fucking point in being a jerk. If you can outlive (Uhm ... expression!) the harrasement, you'll be just fine. And when you do, you'll see that it was ridicioulus to not just laugh at them back then. That is - at least what happened to me.

The only thing you have to remember is. Be strong. You have to try not to care. Find something that you enjoy. For instance your girlfriend (Wich I didn't have at that time -.-). Spend time with her, and enjoy it. Don't care about the others. I have no idea why they tend to do stuff like that. But they jsut do. And they'll stop. You'll just have to be strong enough to make it through it.

Oh! Crap. You didn't want advice. Uhm. My opinion is that a lot of people go through this. A lot. It may seem like you're the only one. Wich it certainy did with me. But youre not. It's quite common. When you and the others grow up, things will definetely be a lot better =)

There is no one set way to prevent or end bullying. Sometimes you can reason with people, other times it's a matter of earning their respect (or fear), others only continue to do it so long as you react to it, while some real special assholes just can't be stopped.

Without knowing the specifics, I'm going to assume you mean highschool, and are thus in the mid to late teens. If that's true, you're pretty much boned. There will come a point where you, being the older one, turn eighteen and she would be younger than that. From then, until the point you are BOTH 18, your relationship could actually have you facing charges as a pedophile. An obsession over "protecting the children" has left the world in a state where they refuse to acknowledge that kids don't just suddenly turn into adults at 18, and that people under 18 may actually have relationships. You can go to the teachers and/or principal about the harassment, but that has equal chance to land you in more hot water as it does to end the torment. You said you went to your parents, as you probably realized, that's totally useless. So your choices are thus:

Break off the relationship.
Continue the relationship and just ignore the harassment.
Beat the sweet silly shit out of anyone who harasses you, each time they do so.

Until you're both over 18, that's pretty much the only two options.

Well, in most states there's some kind of clause saying that if the difference in ages is less than a set range there's no pedophilia occuring. For example in Texas, it's legal as long as they are no more than three years apart - for example a 17 year old girl could date a 19 year old guy with no repercussions.
So unless she's really young for her grade, there's no way it's actually pedophilia, and that's assuming there's anything sexual going on, which is not a safe assumption.

But yeah, OP: Don't sweat it. Ignore them and eventually they'll lose interest and leave you to go out with the girl - but honestly, high school relationships almost always end when one person goes off to college, and if you're being called a pedophile chances are you'll be off to college fairly soon.

I was involved in a similar relationship when I was 18 and my girlfriend (then) was 15. My mates took the piss a lot, but the moment I told them I couldn't give a monkeys and played along with them whenever it was brought up. It was never seen as a problem since. And trust me, it's harder to stand up to your friends than it is some mindless bully.
