So, I've been playing Dragon Age for a while now. I actually bought it before Mass Effect 2(to help pass the time) and I keep going back to it to try to finish my first playthrough. But I have this problem. I SUCK at any game that is not a shooter. Seriously. So, yeah... I guess I just posted this because I have nothing better to do, but I'll add a suckiness poll and you can give me tips and stuff if you feel like it. Yeah, then this thread will have a purpose.

Edit: Dammit, why can't I change my poll?!

I'm opposite. Good at strategy, poor on twitchy action. I found Mass Effect much harder (well, frustrating) than Dragon Age.

Yeah, I really sucked at Dragon Age when I first picked up. I've heard that a lot of people do, so apparently the game has a steep learning curve.

Of course at some point in the game I'm pretty sure most players figure out some cheap move they continuously exploit to win fights. For me it was just luring enemies around corners and then using cone of cold. Allowed for good crowd control and possible instant KOs due to shattering. I really wouldn't consider what I did to be cheating, but I did find most parts of the game to be much, much easier after I used this trick.

I'm better then average but I'm not a god. I find I'm better at Mass Effect only because I've played threw it more then Dragon Age.

I was pretty terrible up to the point where you have to defend the town being invaded. That was when I mastered the whole pause-plan-pulverise thing.

First you need to play more non-shooter games to get yourself used to the style of a strategy based game, because those types make you use your brain.

Dragon Age was never really hard to me.
Once I got my plan worked out I could even slay the high dragon with no diffuculty.

I played it a lot last year, so...I'm pretty good. There is a learning curve, but a huge chunk of that game is learning what builds and characters work and then abusing that to no end. If you're really stuck, try this party:

Tank: Alistair/Shale
DPS: Oghren(Sten is a fine backup here, but Oghren is ultimately better)
You: Rogue Archer(easiest to win with IMO)
Healer: Wynne

Make sure to talk to your party members enough to get them to like you(raises their stats and possibly gives them new skills) and/or give them the appropriate gifts. If you have the DLC packs, go and do those pretty early on since they're pretty simple and net you tons of XP and some of the strongest loot in the game.

It is kind of hard, in my opinion, anyway. Until I got Wynne and her delicious healing spells, I would usually win fights solely through luck, and even then with 2 or 3 of my characters dead.

There's strategy in this game? I just did more quest till I leveled and got the higher end skills/spells. Just over level.

I stopped playing Dragon Age mainly because I couldnt deal with so many DECISIONS... and reading... I mean don't get me wrong I love books but I don't get what people meant by saying DA:O had a great story. Also wtf is with deciding everything? ok for the average person this might be enjoyable but for me it usually involves this:

- La la la playing game
- "I know I'm a blood mage but I need you to forgive me, will you?"...wot? o_O what if I do? you'll betray me wont you...
- But if I don't forgive you then will you kill me or will I pass up an option for a powerful comrade?
- *Goes on google and searches* hmm ok well this guy says go for it, but this guy says dont
(2 hours later)
- Phew ok I'll forgive him

That happens at EVERY SINGLE FUCKING CHOICE so then I turn mr xbox off.

But in general I suck at shooters (ok maybe not 'suck' but I'm a bit above average at best) and am better at non-shooters so I can't relate in any way other than the above.

I'm fine at it. In the instances when I start having difficulty, I just do the smart thing in turning down the difficulty.

I always just hotkeyed 6 abilities that I knew I'd be using, and used them. I don't think I ever did the pause-plan-kill thing.

Out of curiosity, are you playing a console version or the PC version? Supposedly, on consoles, it's supposed to be easier. I had it for the Xbox for awhile, but then traded it for the PC version after I got a decent computer. I haven't really noticed much of a difference, honestly... if anything, the PC version is easier when it comes to assigning actions to your party (the mouse and tactical zoom-out help a lot).

I found it odd you could go through some matches with hardly any problems, then hit one that completely obliterates you.

Also the navigation annoyed me, but that's not really the topic at hand.

*concentrate on making sure everyone stays alive, use your pause menu feature (dk what system your playing on) micro-management to slow things down so you can look at who has what health and what they are doing

*keep your mages alive, wynne/morrigan is a must to have in the party, and i usually like to control them so they can do more damage with their area damage attacks (like blizzard and chain lightning)

*use your specials! they can really make a difference (ESPECIALLY agains the archdemon, i beat it on hard mode by ONE ARROW! otherwise i was toast the next time it attacked)

really all i can say is just get used to using the pause/micro management button, it helps slow things down so you can look at the battlefield and how everyone else is doing, dont get too strung on one player, remember, you control a party, not just your player.

Melee forward, magic and ranged behind to nuke them. Buff spells... debuff them, keep heals going...

Not much needed.

If you can some area spells can drop on groups of critters before they can attack. Drop the ice storm then the fire area spell and bang two damaging mass hits and they haven't gotten near ya.
