The only RPG where i was god was KOTOR. Other than that I am pretty average. Dragon Age kicked my ass for a while but I started getting better once the good stuff became available. Just gotta tough it out.

Yeah, I really sucked at Dragon Age when I first picked up. I've heard that a lot of people do, so apparently the game has a steep learning curve.

Of course at some point in the game I'm pretty sure most players figure out some cheap move they continuously exploit to win fights. For me it was just luring enemies around corners and then using cone of cold. Allowed for good crowd control and possible instant KOs due to shattering. I really wouldn't consider what I did to be cheating, but I did find most parts of the game to be much, much easier after I used this trick.
My trick was restarting the game as a tank. I ate the damage while Wynne healed everyone, and sometimes Morrigan too. So easy after that.

Draw aggro! Focus fire! Heal heal heal! MOAR DOTS!

That's the basic run down of my battles, anyway. I'm great about being strategic, so Dragon Age was a perfect match for me. But stuff like Halo and Call of Booty? Not so much. I've found that when I can't pause, I have this ridiculous tendency to flip the fuck out and LEEROY JENKINS through the entire game in a thick mental haze of panic and terror.

'Makes me think that I wouldn't do so well in an actual survival situation. :p

Wow... I played through the whole game and didn't realize there was a 'healer'. I must have lost her for RP reasons.

Either way, I found the game pretty simple.
I played a sword/shield tank, also had Alistair specc'd the same way, with Morrigan & (forgot the names) one of the two rogues for lockpicking & backstabbing.

I spent most of my gold on buying stuff for healing salves in the first half of the game, but I didn't find this to be an issue since there wasn't much else to spend it on anyway.

Once you got to level 8-10 it was a breeze, since both tanks (you + Alistar) have 3 stun/knockdown effects. And if you gather runes and stick to weapons with tons of rune slots, you'll be outputting tons of damage too.

Just go to options and switch it to easy for the first playthrough so you can get used to it.

But... it's not hard... how can you suck at it?

It's just KOTOR stripped down and repainted with fantasy-ish colours.

It's.... easy....

The main reason why I had a hard time I didn't level up my own characters, the game does a shitty job for you.

It definitely has that one boss thing going on.

I was doing fine on normal, having fun, there would be that tense moment when I was low on healing items, but other than that, nothing major.

Then, I ran across the Broodmother.

FUCKING BROODMOTHER!

She was a serious wake up call, after that though, all was good. I actually ran with 3 warriors and a rogue, no healer, I just had a lot of healing items packed up. :p

My Berserker - Dual Weapon Damager
Alistair - Tank
Leliana - Grenade Rogue, and she does some damage with Majorlaine's Recurve xD
Veritas - My loyal WAR HOUND

Fucked them darkspawn up, man.

I found Kotor way easier, they didn't have force whirlwind in this game.

Once you figure out the systems behind the game I'd agree that it's easy. Until then it can be a brutal slog. Hell, I didn't know that I could pick up a specialist healer by simply doing quests in a different order and I dind't want to sacrifice murderin' spells for Morrigan to help heal. My first stop after Ostigar was the Forrest and there were many, many sequences that rapidly drained my medical supplies. The fight with the dragon alone was brutal since it delivers insane damage at very high AP levels and is immune or highly resistant to most attempts at crowd control. It also did significant AOE damage. Eventually I got the right combination of skills, movements, traps and potions down and killed the thing.

By the time I got to the tower, I had figured out how to survive without a healer and having Wynn on the team made the game into easy street.

True, but there are various spells that you can unlock which involve freezing or stunning opponents. Having the same effect as force whirlwind.

Just sayin.

I suppose it simply depends (just like in KOTOR wink wink*) which area you go to first.
I went tower, Ostagar, forest.
And of course I had Shale.
So yeah. Depends, I guess.

WW did that and huge amounts of damage, plus I had a shitty controller so doing AoE attacks, always ended up getting interrupted

I didn't really find it too hard, but that might have been all my mods making the game so much simpler.

Either stock up on potions, or get a healer in the party, or both and you're pretty much set.

Try not to have an AOE oriented mage though, since there's a chance of friendly fire. VERY annoying when you cast earthquake and everyone falls down, including your dps.

Are you having trouble even on the easy difficulty? I feel that on easy they are basically FORCING you to win. My first playthrough was on Normal and I found that to be a bit too easy for my liking. I played through on the hardest setting and found that mode to be very tough and ultimately had to rely on a lot of saving before battles and reloading til I got lucky on some stuff but I definitely found beating it on the hardest setting more rewarding.

I know there is a difficulty in between normal and the hardest one that I imagine is probably the "sweet spot" for just enough challenge but I never really tried that setting.

I basically just used Shale to tank, Alistair for DPS and Wynne to heal. My player character was a mage who really did a majority of the killing and crowd control. I think the secret to success in that game is controlling WHO the enemies are attacking and keeping enemies disabled for as long as possible (paralyze, weakness, crushing prison, curse of mortality, petrify, etc.)

I'm much better at ME1 and 2 then DA:O, not because I suck at strategy, but because I refuse to pause the damn game.

I'm pretty good at Dragon Age actually. I quite like building characters. The only enemy that I really hate are revenants. Only killed me the first time I met one at Redcliffe but they can be rather long battles considering I generally don't use a range melee character and half my party are mages. I use Alister to tank, Wynn for healing, Morrigan for crowd control, and my PC, a duel wield rogue with stealth, to take out threatening enemies (mainly mages) first. Haven't really had much difficulty with boss battles though I haven't played on the highest difficulty yet.

Well, I guess what we can take away from this is that Star Wars is awesome and infinitley better than the random fantasy things that are spawned nowadays.

I've been having a hard time, too. There's been some especially hard moments that have made me lapse on the game, I've had it for sixth months and I'm just now getting toward the end. I came to realize that a generally good strategy is to select all your characters and have them take on enemies one at a time as a group. It may not be the most strategic way, but it's been effective.

Oh, and I'm playing on Easy =P
