Steep learning curve? Well I play the game on easy for the story. Just try to beat the Darkspawn Chronicles on Hard, I dare you.

And by the way, make it so your characters take a health potion when their health is at less than 10% for regular foes, for boss battles less than 25, and for High Dragons or The Arch Demon, 50%.

I was doing good, I was the human noble warrior, did redcliffe, thought defending the town was a challenge, but fun. Then I went to the Mage's Circle and I died inside. The end of this level was just rage inducing. That damn sloth demon...I couldn't kill it. No matter what I did, I could not kill it. So I stopped playing for a while. then I realized I had screwed up somewhere in leveling my characters and what-not. That, and apparently bringing two mages (wynne AND morrigan) was just a stupid idea, considering the last party member was the thief girl with the sexy accent.

So I started a new game, a dwarf noble warrior (yea yea, BIG DIFFERENCE) and I've been playing it pretty slowly. First time I was a sword and shield specialist, this time I'm going for dual wielding. Still very early in the game (Just became a Grey Warden, and now the battle has begun) So hopefully I won't screw up to badly this time.

The only (big) problem I had with dragon age is that the choices weren't easily identifiable as good or bad. I generally picked the one with the least amount of jerkish undertones, but there were some choices where three of the four choices given could have been considered "good."

A good thing about Dragon age, though, is that you get like three separate times to confirm your decisions.

I was ok at the game. I played through it on casual because I had rented it, and I wanted to beat it before I had to return it. casual makes things quite easy. I had more trouble with the Hurlock Alphas than I did the Ogres, Which probably isn't supposed to happen. I also got stuck with a set of characters in a combat heavy section of the game w/ no healer, so I died a few times.

Also, mages are really powerful. You can get a total of 3 or 4 AoE spells, and have them all in the same spot at the same time, which is pretty OP. The only beef I have with mages if that their hats look silly.

Dragon Age's difficulty is rather refreshing. Yeah, you have piss easy games that encompass over 50% of the games market, but then you have a game like Demon's Souls that repeated just keeps crushing you under it's heavily armored boot. A game like that kicks your ass and makes you work like all hell just to get back a measly quarter of the progress that you lost.

Dragon Age, on the other hand, has it's challenges, parts that you genuinely struggle with, but it's done in a manner that's actually manageable. Enough to the point where you have to up your game from a relaxed state of enjoyment to a more determined and focused stance when coming upon that one boss that killed you the last time. Then is when the satisfaction if victory is most highest, because you set a goal and earned it.

I played it a lot last year, so...I'm pretty good. There is a learning curve, but a huge chunk of that game is learning what builds and characters work and then abusing that to no end. If you're really stuck, try this party:

Tank: Alistair/Shale
DPS: Oghren(Sten is a fine backup here, but Oghren is ultimately better)
You: Rogue Archer(easiest to win with IMO)
Healer: Wynne

Make sure to talk to your party members enough to get them to like you(raises their stats and possibly gives them new skills) and/or give them the appropriate gifts. If you have the DLC packs, go and do those pretty early on since they're pretty simple and net you tons of XP and some of the strongest loot in the game.
No mage? Mage is the funniest to play and it massacres. :D

Oh, I love having mages around, I'm just saying for someone new to the game it might be easier to avoid using them on the first play-through. Besides, even with Wynne as a healer she has enough skill space to grab a lot of the really strong mage spells(at the very least I give her the whole Crushing Prison tree).

That was kinda the point. There was no good/evil axis in the game, it's all grey area. You would have to decide between short term and long term goals, as in letting people live in peace or force them to defeat the big bad for the good of all.

On topic: I find it makes a HUGE difference if you've got a good tactics setup for your healer. At some point in my first playthrough I copypasted a set of actions for wynne and it just changed everything. She could heal for eternities without running our of mana, if she's got the right spells.

edit: searched for the setup I used:
http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Healing_Spells_Efficiency#Tactics_Setup

I didn't even use agressive mages in my games, which are considered a bit overpowered with shattering, and the only time I ran into problems was when fighting Flemeth.

If you're playing on console, I can undersand, because the console version can be a bit hectic, but the PC version is a masterfully designed tactical RPG.

The game is mildly challenging, on HARD difficulty.

Unfortunately that is actually a step up from the usual casual fare we get.
DA:O gets a thumbs up for this reason alone, but Bio messed up with DA:awakening which is trivially easy again.

I stopped playing Dragon Age mainly because I couldnt deal with so many DECISIONS... and reading... I mean don't get me wrong I love books but I don't get what people meant by saying DA:O had a great story. Also wtf is with deciding everything? ok for the average person this might be enjoyable but for me it usually involves this:

- La la la playing game
- "I know I'm a blood mage but I need you to forgive me, will you?"...wot? o_O what if I do? you'll betray me wont you...
- But if I don't forgive you then will you kill me or will I pass up an option for a powerful comrade?
- *Goes on google and searches* hmm ok well this guy says go for it, but this guy says dont
(2 hours later)
- Phew ok I'll forgive him

That happens at EVERY SINGLE FUCKING CHOICE so then I turn mr xbox off.

But in general I suck at shooters (ok maybe not 'suck' but I'm a bit above average at best) and am better at non-shooters so I can't relate in any way other than the above.
You're doing it wrong. You aren't supposed to look it up and mull it over for hours. You're supposed to ROLEPLAY. You know, do what you'd do in the situation? It's one of he cornerstones in the RPG genre, that has been there since D&D, and I feel that is missing in a lot of RPGs. Dragon Age (or any BioWare game, really) are some of the few that actually implement it into the game.

Better than average I reckon - don't know if I could handle it on hard.

I micro-manage but I can't use the tactical menus.

I use cheats when playing it, so yeah. I suppose having god mode would equate to "I am a God" :)

Nah didn't suck. Found it relativly easy. 2 Warriors, 1 rogue and 1 mage and i pwned that game hard. Shame it took me most of the game to realise it sucked.

Hard at first, but gets ALOT easier. I played it regularly for nearly 2 months and managed to solo the whole game on nightmare.
