I'd say anything but the .50 cal.

Seriously, that's a little...overpowered, not to mention expensive. Also, if you hunt, the Barret is a lot heavier, therefor harder to carry and run around with.

you don't hunt with a .50 cal
first off its not legal in most states to hunt with any rifle bigger than .30'06, i know in Massachusetts its not legal to hunt with a rifle bigger than a .22 so to do any real hunting you need to use a 20 or 12 gauge and as we all know slugs arn't exactly accurate.

Well, not sure on the retail price but a cheytac intervention would be pretty cool. Destroy the same engine block as the barret only without the missing.

Hmmm...Then I suppose that is another point to use in the anti-.50 cal argument, eh?

WHAT?!? no i love the 50 cal for target shooting. If it weren't illegal to own a 50 cal in Massachusetts I would own one. Also I don;t have enough land to shoot it on. I think its a federal law that you need a 1 mile long range for 50 cal rifles and machine guns.

.50 cals, especially Barretts, are like corvettes... absolutely no reason to own one, other for the sake of owning one. It's a gorgeous, expensive rifle that promotes quite a bit of conversation around the shooting range.

A .50cal rifle? Unless you've got a couple of miles' worth of flat desert with some thick igneous rock surrounding it in your backyard, you're taking a serious chance of a stray round hitting something you don't want it to. A .50BMG round can deliver lethal force to a human being TWO MILES AWAY. Is it worth it to your ego to risk a stray harming someone? (Or, hell, SEVERAL someones?) The 7.62x51mm is much safer for recreational use.

Remember, a good shooter keeps in mind the safety of EVERYONE around him.

It really depends what you're gonna use it for. What you're gonna be shooting at and how far away it's going to be.

If it's for decoration just get a replica.

Regardless of what all the "gamers" here would say (who's entire knowledge of firearms comes from a video game) I recommend you custom build a rifle. It will be far more accurate and have some sentimental value to it, too.

Get a Remington 700 action, probably from a place like Surgeon Rifles. Get a custom barrel on it, 26". I'd recommend to have it fluted. Choose the caliber you want. Choose the stock you want (for a tactical rifle I'd recommend a McMillan, they make plenty of nice stocks in whatever color you want.

As for optics, I will alway say go for a Leupold :D
A Mark 4 should top that very nicely. And get a few other minor accessories, and you got yourself a nice long range precision rifle that will reach out 'n' touch something :)

Also, calibers I recommend:
.338 Lapua (expensive now, but gaining in popularity among target shooters)
6mm BR Norma (a great Euro target caliber)
6.5-284 Norma (another great Euro target caliber, more readily available in the US)
.300 Win Mag
.300 Ultra Mag

Also, I am assuming that you reload your ammo custom...because if you don't, you really shouldn't even be getting a rifle that high priced, you'll just bottleneck it's accuracy.

All this is still cheaper than a Barrett, I believe. And also, the M82A1 never got off the ground because it had limited accuracy at longer ranges, which made it better suited for an anti-material rifle. And the action of a semi-automatic has far too many moving parts to truly allow it to compete with a bolt action sniper rifle.

Back to topic: Why the hell would you want a sniper rifle? This makes you sound like a mass murderer waiting to happen. I hope any gun store owner you ask for a sniper rifle kicks you out. If you want a gun to shoot targets with just get a .22. Works just as well and its a hell of alot cheaper.
It's stereotypes like this that will eventually cause the downfall of firearms. Everyone assumes since someone wants a precision rifle, they must be out to fuck someone up...

It's also on part of a lack of education on the matter that causes people to react this way.
And other thing: The "retail price" of a Barret is over double what you say it is. It will run you around $8,000... a more reasonable option would be going with the bolt action single shot version. Much more practical for what you want to use it for.

I went for why you needed a sniper rifle, though I"d go for the Bravo. It's cheaper to shoot, and won't pull off false alarms on the police for just owning it. It's a good rifle for big bore hunting like moose, bear, boar etc.

You Americans and your weapons... is there anything you aren't allowed to buy?
I'd say unless you're planning in advance for a zombie apocalypse or you want to overthrow the gouvernment where's the point in owning a sniper rifle?
I am planning for that, only I call it "emergency plan 1: Viral outbreak"
"emergency plan 2: World War -enemy invasion"
"emergency plan 3: US government goes crazy" (least likely, only if they completely ignore the constitution).

Why do you need a Sniper rifle? Am I going to hear about you on the news sometime?
With a .50 I'm betting international news. At least when you go all John malcovich on Mr Obama try and take out a couple of republicans too, you know, even things out.

My question is, why the fuck do you need a high powered sniper? Luckily as a UK Citizen I can ask this question without fear of being shot from 2 miles away. Thank god for the pond.
Do not worry, I am looking more for recreation and hunting then anything else

I had not considered building my own rifle that is a good idea. I know the US army marksmanship team "reengineers" all the parts on their rifles. Yes, I do plan on loading my own ammo.

But you might be right on bolt-action also, I prefer semiautomatic only because that is what I am used to. I should make the switch for stability.

Yea I see absolutely no reason to have one.

It is impractical for self-defense and are you even allowed to hunt with a sniper rifle?
Yes, you can hunt with a long range rifle.

Ok correct me if im wrong but isn't a .50 caliber HIGH POWERED rifle a Class 3 weapon? If thats the case then you are going to spend almost 6k in taxes and licensing fee's not to mention all the red tape. Of course anyone who calls a high powered rifle a 'sniper rifle' is a first person shooter nut who probably doesn't know the first things about firearms and even if you do you have no business owning those high powered rifles anyways. They are way too much gun for someone who doesn't have military training, i mean thats like riding a moped for two months then buying a Ducati 1198 thinking you can handle it. Its just......stupid.

So, your primary reason for wanting a .50 anti-material rifle in case of a zombie apocalypse, but you think the US government is the crazy one?

Bravo. Why? Because I'm a cheap bastard and I do not regard a higher priced item by so much, with a higher upkeep cost, a valid investment for my enjoyment.

However, remember, when buying sniper rifles, cry once.

Don't think about, "Oh, I'll get this more expensive one later" Get the one that fits you and ignore price.

Don't be a fucking idiot. There is NOTHING you could possibly need a sniper rifle for other than brutal, cold-blooded murder and why the FUCK should we advise you on how to do that?

Give me ONE good reason why you'd need a sniper rifle, and I'd call you a liar (and a psychopath while I'm at it).
