A question, though. Do people who have this done ever have trouble talking?
Not at all. A split that goes back 2 inches doesn't effect speech. It would take a botched procedure (cutting of nerves or whatnot) to effect speech. Because of how muscle groupings are set up in the tongue, you could go all the way back to where the tongue is connected. At that point, I believe, speech becomes effected.

I have no problem with split tongues and I do think they're quite cool. I've always been tempted to have mine pierced but not split

Fair play, I had to ask because it holds alot of weight, you know what I mean?

So are you definitely going to get it done?

I wanted a tattoo of an anime character on my shin. I don't watch that anime anymore. I think the same principle applies.

I'm on the fence, but in favor of getting it done. Despite the nearly one-sided responses of this discussion, one thing most people have right is that it's a big deal. Regretable in the long run if I ever change my position on this. I'm about to return to college (art school), and I can't help but wonder if getting it done while in college will alienate myself from the youngins. :)

Best of luck to you, I hope it turns out well, to be honest its one of those things you'll get used to and you'll want to change another part of you somehow.

Well if you have certain psychological issues that is, I don't mean it as a great big awful mess of an issue, but you know how girls who have boob jobs sometimes go on to have more surgery in order to enhance?.

Just make sure its what you really want, don't go doing it because its something you think about once a month, my girlfriend makes sure that I think about her period once a month, but I don't go out getting my own period because of it.

Ah I'm in the same boat actually, in a few years, when I'm in my 30s I'll be back in Uni, so I hear that. Mind you with some of these kiddies today... ;o)

It will alienate everyone who is closed minded, not just the youngins Firia, I'm sure you already knew that but I felt it needed reiterating in text form.

Its not the worst thing in the world is it? alienating someone that is that way.

Also if your a nice person, then what you do could impact the lives of these youngsters in college, for the better... as in positive reinforcement in someone that is physically different to "the norm".

If you do get it done, I wanna see pics :D

The guys tongue looks like a lobster claw. It seems like it would be cool for a while but then I'd definitely get bored after a while.

I wish I had seen the first video before I voted. You would have gotten one less "Wow, that's messed up" and one more "That's cool!" I think that video was really cool, although I would never get it done to myself. NEVER.

Ignore all the naysayers. That is awesome.
I knew there'd be naysayers aplenty. :) So far, responce has been about on par with what I expected.
but let me guess: you're going to go through with it anyway. i don't see any particular reason for doing this honestly. it doesn't look cool, it won't be a benefit for future employment and it won't be a nice thing to give to future you. future you will most likely be swearing at present you for this decision and may come up with a plan to mock and torture you for this. be warned, future you's are vengeful.

it should be noted: i'm all for change of aesthetics to mark who you are, but you can do that in better ways than this.

A few perspectives:

Pessimist - "If you get your tongue split nobody will hire you, nobody will date you, your parents will disown you, and your dog will pee on you in your sleep... Even if you don't own a dog."

Optimist - "You could get hit by a bus walking across the street tomorrow. If you think sawing your tongue in half will bring a few moments of pleasure to the short time you spend on this earth, go for it."

George Carlin - "Unless you have an earring with a Live Baby dangling from it, it doesn't mean anything.
I want you to know that I am in favor of self-mutilation and personal disfigurement. I've always said there's nothing like puncturing and perforating your skin in a dozen or so places to demonstrate your high self-esteem. When I see a young man decorating his scalp with a soldering iron, I say 'There's a happy guy! Thinks highly of himself!'"

A humble request: If you do get your tongue split, come back and tell us if you like it.

You know that tongue piercings and splitting increases your risk for heart infections, right?
Like, a drastically shortened lifespan and needing open heart surgery every decade or so...
I know I'm a bit paranoid, but I'd say don't do it unless you really really want it, and its worth the risk. Like, you feel empty inside without it.
At least, that's what the doctor up at school kept reiterating.
Good Lord, I think he thinks I'm some sort of disturbed goth lesbian...

All that I keep thinking is that you haven't made your mind up, which brings the question to light "do you REALLY want it done?" It's the kind of thing I would've thought you either do or not, but umming and ahhing? Surely that bit of doubt is sure to creep in at some point?

Even if you hang out in the kind of circles that think it's really cool, it will inevitably have an effect on your love life, your work life and your home life... Can't you just start with a few unusual piercings and go from there? ^_^

EDIT: Erana, where did you read that? I've never heard about that? How does it cause increased health risk?
