This is just something I was mulling over lately. With all the things that consoles can do now days, they're almost PC's. But, that means they're extremely expensive, too. If a game console came out that was cheaper and just played games, would you buy it? Consider that you would have internet, but you couldn't get on the web. There would be a store to download titles and all of the current cross platform games would be available. It would be like an economic console system. So, would you buy it?

It's called the Wii lolololololol

But in all honesty, as long as the software lineup is good, I'd be fine with it. I never use the extra features on my PS3 or 360, and I don't know anyone who does either to be honest.

I probably wouldn't notice.

I use my PC for everything important.

I was thinking that would be someone's response, lol, and I almost included something about it in the post, guess I should have :p. But I don't mean like the Wii, I'm talking about a system that could play all the current gen cross platform games. Maybe thats all it'd be. It'd be a cross platform only system that just played games and allowed for downloads.

Edit:

Yeah I guess this question is directed at the console/pc and console playing crowd.

I don't use any extra features, so yeah I would. I never wanted the features in the first place, I have a computer for when i want a computer.

I only use them for games anyway... Everything else I can do on my computer or some other appliance. I WISH they came out with a "Game only" version of consoles, because I don't need any of this extra crap I'm forced to pay for.

Thats my thinking. I didn't have enough space on my 60gig's HD for movies or music because there was game data on it. I found that having game data on my PS3 was more important then some song or video. Now granted, I did use the internet on it when my laptop broke, but I could do that with my DSi now.

Thats DRM, which I actually did think about in my post, but didn't include it. Since it'd be up to the company to include DRM or not. Like, since Assassin's Creed is Multiplat, it'd be one of the games you could play. Unfortunately, Ubisoft likes DRM, so it'd be on there. But as far as the console itself, the idea would be that you didn't need internet to play, sort of how you don't yet need it for every SP game at the moment.

I'd buy it. I don't use my console to browse online, watch movies or play music. That's why I have a computer.

in that case I might consider it if they are gonna release big games with the option of renting them or downloading demo,s

Yeah, that was my original idea. Like, you'd have the console work just like other consoles as far as gaming goes, but it wouldn't have all the extra stuff, like being able to play movies or music. Background images and all that. You'd just pop in the disc and start playing, like back in the days of the NES, but with discs.

Well... Not really.

I use my PS3 as a gaming console, but more importantly as a Blu Ray/DVD player and media center to play movies/series/music from my PC.

See I don't have an HD TV anyway, and I have a Bluray player someone gave me, so I guess I wouldn't use it for that to begin with (if it still worked.) But I can't help but think that a system designed just for the games would sell well because it'd be so much cheaper and a better option for people like me. Of course, you wouldn't get exclusives, I guess.

Had to go with the last option, because I don't game on consoles.

But if I did, I don't think I'd really need all the bells and whistles - I have to maintain a computer anyway, so replicating part of the functionality on another machine doesn't serve any purpose for me.

I didn't vote in the poll because it depends on what games were released on it.

I'd LOVE a console without the bells & whistles (the bells & whistles are annoying - how dare they charge me more for them).

But I'm not gonna buy it if I don't like any of the game.

Haha, well I'm glad you picked an option, lol. Yeah I agree that if you have both, I'd see where you wouldn't have much of a need for it. Still, if thats all it did, it would save you some room on your harddisk.

Really.... I don't want to see another Sega. It's really not required.

I'd like to see the next gens hook up with someone like Google. I'd like to see them do everything they currently do, but also have the flexibility and power to kick out... the world, and a world that is supported, upgraded, open, and standardized.

Sony was doing well to attempt Yellowdog Linux on their console. However this was poorly implemented. (Sec before you scream :) ) The way they did this left the console effectively living a split personality. It also required setup and reading that left it to a small community. Of course, when this capability was brought out, this was the state of technology and Linux. We've moved past this barrier especially with Android, and with Android's user interface it's simple enough for grandma.

The thing is, the new consoles aren't going to be cheap. Even the ones that are (Wii) have more then enough power to run pretty much all the bells and whistles.

If you're referring to bells and whistles as the latest and greatest tech (Blueray at the time), that would be a solid debate.

It could be argued that starting low and allowing the bells and whistles through upgrades might be the path, but this has proven to be a bad path. Both the 32x and Sega CD were great pieces of hardware, but only a small percentage of Sega owners actually bought one. If I were a game designer I'd avoid these upgrades like the plague as it limit's my audience. This means fewer titles for the upgrade. The upgrade effectively defeats it's self as fewer would buy it due to the lack of content (meaning fewer devs want to touch it).

Nintendo did well without the bells and whistles, but it owns it's own little niche. This is kind of like Farmville and other social media games.

On the other side of the house, you've got a huge player base that wants more complexity in games. This base doesn't play much Farmville or Nintendo. These are the people who go back and play their favorite oldies and come back saying "Wow, I don't remember the graphics being so horrible". This base requires the latest and greatest hardware to compete with hardware that will be out in the coming years. Because of this it's more then worth it to come out with a piece of hardware that is so powerful and complex that first games only use a percentage of the available power. This gets expensive.

Where do I sit? I'm with the non-Farmville/Nintendo players. Course, all of this is pointless I guess.... if I have my choice I'll have the best of the "game players". The PC. (BTW The X-box controllers works great on it.)

Yeah, most of it's fairly useless. I've got a computer for browsing the internet, and I have very little interest in music (amazingly.)
