I've been hearing a lot of people wondering if the cost of games will be going up next gen since the costs to make games are still going to increase. So, I want to know from you fellow escapists.

Would you still buy games if the cost were to go up to $69.99?

No, and I also won't buy a pc game at $59.99 but that isn't stopping some people leading publishers to think they can get away with pricing more and more games at 60 bucks.

Edit: With the prevalence of deluxe editions to people willing to pay for dlc season passes, we are already paying more than 60 dollars for our "AAA" games.

It would barely affect me at all.

Games drop in price so quickly now and there are SO many of them to chose from that unless I MUST HAVE IT NOWZ! (maybe once a year), I don't ever buy at full price. So they can do what they want with the price for I will just continue waiting to buy the game until it gets to a price that I find reasonable.

So I suppose "Other" would be my choice since I wouldn't say Yes or No because I don't care. I also don't buy used games all that often so that wouldn't matter and I don't think we need to overthrow the gaming government because the prices of our games have gone up :)

Didn't Sony say prices would be staying similar to they are now in the current gen?

The most I spend on a game is £25, Its my "cut off" price, even if I have the money its just a principle I've set for myself.

Nope. I'd just wait a few months on all my game purchases since by that point the price will have plummeted into the $20 to $30 range.

Nope not unless I really wanted the game as soon as possible because that's getting a bit too over priced there for my liking.

I'd still buy games if the price went up. I wouldn't buy them full price, but I rarely do that now. The only thing a price increase would change is the time I have to wait before the game got into my price range. There are plenty of games in my backlog to keep me busy so I wouldn't mind.

Nope. Here in the UK, games are already toeing up from the £40 mark, and that's as high as I'm willing to pay for a game.
And the larger publishers (EA, Ubisoft, Activision) seem to be pushing that up to £60.

Personally, I'm willing to pay up to that for limited editions with a few physical extras (hello Bioshock Infinite!), but I only very rarely buy vidyagames new.

No I wouldn't, I'd rather stick to my PC with my dirt cheap steam sales and games that are sometimes even given out for free[footnote]see adonyne[/footnote]. I mean buying games are nice n all but 70 bucks for a new release is something I wouldn't want to pay for, I'd either wait till it drops down to <50 at the least or get some ridiculously stellar reviews.

And just to top it all off being an Australian 70 bucks for you Americans is probably 100 bucks for us. Hooray for the video game industry!

Nah they won't do that, because they realized hidden costs are far better as the customer can't work out for howmuch he is getting hustled.

EA didn't announce all their future titles will have microtransactions for nothing.

I would just simply play my backlog or already huge library of games i've built up, publishers can starve for all I care.

not to mention the annoying amount of "season passes" and DLC's that are coming out these days, and they hardly EVER slash prices for those, the fuckers try and recoup any profits they can by luring you in with the broken down game and sell you parts that should've been in there in the first place.

if new games are going to have price increases then i will so be giving consoles a pass for as long as i can, PCs are becoming cheaper and so are the games, it would actually be interesting to see what would happen if the cheaper PC games began to sell more than their expensive console counterparts, probably wont happen but it would be very interesting

Nope. I won't be buying a PS4 or Nextbox. And even if prices jumped on games this generation I still wouldn't pay that much.

Few games on PC survive a $60 pricing for long. There's little chance that PC gamers would tollerate a $70 pricing scheme for long.

This is Australia calling.

A day one, high profile PS3 game can cost $110.00 at some retailers here. And yes, our dollar is worth about the same as the US dollar.

We laugh at your alarm.

So yeah, personally I wouldn't be all that fussed. Besides, between Steam sales, GreenManGaming and other such sellers, I rarely pay full price these days.

I'm going to leave this here while the thread is nice and short in its early stages. Later posters are a bit more likely then to see this post as they skim the first page, after all.

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2010/10/an-inconvenient-truth-game-prices-have-come-down-with-time/

Basically, $69.99 (US money, not real money like we have in the UK xD) is not as expensive as games were years ago. We're not forking out silly amounts, we're paying the same or less than we used to but the number has simply changed. Unfortunately, most people on this site don't understand what inflation is in the economy, not properly, because they're in their late teens or early twenties and thus are too young to have experienced the reality of 'financial value' first hand, so game prices seem to be going up when really they're coming down. So yes, I will still buy games at full price in the future, because I know I'm getting a decent deal there.

With the amount of games coming out each day and all the DLC's and extras they try to sell you over the course of the year, I'm surprised that even $60 is still acceptable. I'm not gonna buy any game for $69.

Fuck you, captcha. $69 is a lot of money!

Voted "R3v01uti0n!!!!," because it was the closest option to "start buying more indie games and watch the AAA industry go into another crash." Because seriously, they were reaming us at $50 a pop. $60 each was worse, adding DLC was just highway robbery. If they go $70 and still do DLC (which would happen -- there's no way the majors will give up on paid DLC just because of a price hike), I'll sit back and laugh as they go out of business, while my money goes to bedroom coders who actually treat their customers right.
