Wall of text, so...yeah...sorry XD
I have been a Call of Duty fan for quite a while. It's sad to see such a great series grow stale because of greed, though we are to blame as well (We're still buying this stuff guys). I recently watched footage of Modern Warfare 3 from E3, and honestly...I don't know what to think. This game had even less developement time than Black Ops. Modern Warfare brought Call of Duty into the spotlight. It deserves better. I don't know what to think because it seems like it's dead inside. An empty, soulless shell. It's like meeting a nice girl, falling in love with her, and then she has to move away. You still talk to her, but it's not the same. It tears both of you apart. She gets mixed up with drugs, alcohol, etc. You meet her years later. You're happy to see each other, but she's not the same, sweet person you knew years ago,but part of her is still alive in there. Sadly, you know she'll never be the same. (Sorry about that XD)
A little more before I get to the friggin' point:
Modern Warfare is known for it's "shocking" moments.
COD 4: The bomb scene. It didn't really bother me that much, but only because a friend spoiled it for me.
MW2: The airport. We all heard about this. When I saw it, I was actually moved. It got to me on an emotional level. I played through that level, and I still got that powerful feeling, but it wore off after a few playthroughs (What? I have to relieve stress somehow XD).
Now we have MW3. I know it seems stupid and odd, but that one small and insignificant part in the beginning of the demo in which you swim through a flooded Lincoln Tunnel with dead bodies stuck in the cars, THAT scene, that one THIRTY SECOND scene, was powerful. Not just because I'm a New Yorker (Plus, I live outside of the city, although not too far away), but because it just WORKED. It showcased the horrors of warfare, which was the goal of the other moments I described. The rest was painful. I mean, it looked cool and everything, and I'm sure it will be fun. It IS Call of Duty, after all.
My point:
Modern Warfare, no...Call of Duty still has the potential to bring itself back to greatness. The milking of a series is a sad thing. I just feel that with more developement time, this could be the next great game in the series. I liked every game since COD 4. Hell, I REALLY liked Black Ops, but I recognize that it's going downhill. I don't want that. No fan wants that. The death of a series is a sad thing. I was sad when they "cancelled" Duke Nukem, and I never even PLAYED a Duke Nukem game. Great games take time. I recall on Extra Creditz (which you should all totally watch) it was once said that a REALLY good quality game takes 3 to 5 years of developement time. I think that's true, and a good game can restore a series. hell, I have faith that Halo 4 can be good XD. I mean, it's been almost 5 years since the last MAJOR title (Talking about Halo 3. Loved Reach, by the way) So I've been thinking...I must ask you, fellow Escapists...
If Modern Warfare 3 was given more developement time, would it restore your faith in the series? Would you buy it?
Also, when discussing the Call of Duty series, this is always necessary, so I'll get it out of the way now, William Shatner style:
KOTIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
