It has some of the better turn based combat I've seen. I loved the way Persona's 3 and 4 handled the usually droll concept of "elemental rock-paper-scissors".

I love me some quality real-time combat in RPGs, but Persona was simply not made with that in mind.

I mean, how would summoning a persona to cast spells in real-time even work? It would seem extremely odd to me, if my main source of real-time input was levied to a third party entity rather than the character who's movements I control. Keeping it turn-based completely eliminates such a problem and allows us to keep using personas.

It would suck.

We don't see enough turn-based RPGs any more. The Persona series (and by extent, Shin Megami Tensei) are one of the current bastions of good old-school, turn-based, tactical RPG goodness.

Removing turn based combat would remove a large part of the game's identity. And aside from that, why on earth would you want it to change? It's not just because the game is turn-based, P3 and P4 have some of the best battle systems in recent memory, period.

Persona's gameplay tends to be style over substance anyway. Most of the RPG elements are somewhat redundant since you don't really make choices when you level and peronas themselves are essentially just gear. As long as the combat fits the themes of a new game I wouldn't be particularly bothered. That said Personas 3 and 4 featured some of the best jrpg style turn based comt I have ever seen and if they added some more depth and customisation then there wouldn't be any reason- outside of narrative mechanics- to ditch something that's already well polished and beloved by many.

In either case they better start naming their stats more logically, or at least providing tooltips explain exactly what they mean. They also need to stop making the ability to resist certain effects dependent almost entirely upon level, thus forcing the player to grind before bosses that use charm for example. That shit just doesn't fly.

Nah it just wouldn't be Persona without the turn based combat, although they really need to get a better way of finding out weaknesses so you don't just have to keep trying until you find it.

Wouldn't that make the entire game easier? Plus unless it's a boss , it's already really easy to find out a monsters weakness, especially in the persona games. I disagree wholeheartedly in doing that . One of the things SMT games do well is challenge .

OT: KEEP THE TURN BASE FOREVER . I like turn based game , i dislike anything else , especially when you have a party , it becomes a giant clusterfuck , like in Star ocean 3/4

It'd be an interesting change and I don't doubt Atlus' ability to make a fun game, regardless of whatever changes they implement. All this said though and I must admit to really digging the current combat system.

I'd like to add a little caveat to my poll choice: I love real-time combat, and I love turn-based combat. But for the love of god, forcing a game over just because the main character dies while the rest of your party is at full strength is PANTS ON HEAD RETARDED

Persona 3 introduced a slick, functional, responsive turn based battle system- one that I honestly feel holds up today. I wouldn't even raise an eyebrow if they kept the battling as it is in P4:G- such is my faith in the way of the blessed "One More!" style.

Obviously, Atlus knows what they're doing- it doesn't *really* matter; either way it'll be designed to appeal to the fans. Still, I'd rather they kept it turn based.

As long as I can get my hands on a new Persona game, Atlus can do whatever the heck they want with the combat.

I'd really prefer it if it stayed turn-based though...

I've never played them, but my whole idea on it could be something similar to Kingdom Hearts, if it were to drop turn based.

Honestly, the only thing that makes me hesitate when considering picking up a Persona game is the turn-based battle systems (and I've got a friend who is ALWAYS bugging me about picking up P3). I absolutely despise turn based combat and I really don't think I've ever seen a good turn based combat game, ever.

How would you feel about it?
Persona is one of the last bastions of Turn Based Combat! If Persona leaves that behind, it won't be Persona anymore.

I would be very, very disappointed if Persona 5 did that.

I prefer to keep it Turn Based, the SMT series is the only franchise I can think of that is still doing that well, we could go to other franchises for real time combat but SMT is the place to go for the old school turn based.

I think the turn based combat is good, but grindy sometimes so the change might be welcome, but I'd rather prefer a spin off from it to do so, but I'd want that to also be less grindy.

Mainly because I want a more actiony Persona to give me the enthusiasm required to finish one.

I wouldnt be too bothered as long as it was good and kept the same kind of feel but I am not confident they could pull that off maybe they should do a side game in the persona series (despite it already being a spin off) and try it in that and see how it goes.

Really though I expect Persona games to be turn based it has worked well and can still be improved on imo so continual refinement would be less risky than ripping it out and adding a brand new system especially as Persona dosent really need to specifically appeal to the mainstream as it is lucky to have an inbuilt fan base and it would not be wise to piss them off.

For real time combat in my Persona games I will stick with Persona 4 arena.

Persona with Namco Tales-style combat, please. Would be the best JRPG ever.

That would be awful, simply awful. You don't want it to be like Final Fantasy where the battle system is significantly changed every installment. Small, gradual change, and not change for the sake of it. Like others said, persona is one of the last strongholds of turn-based battles and it should stay that way as it suits the game really well - these days, it sets SMT games apart as unique. That said, if ATLUS came up with an innovative system which seemed like a logical successor to turn-based combat I wouldn't hate them for it.
