I would probably end up as one of those guys who would just join the Imperial Academy as a way to make a living, then after I complete my training I would realize that the Empire can be super corrupt.
After which, I would go join the Rebellion.

I've gotta go with mercenary/unaligned.
The Empire and Alliance have very low job security. If you're in the Empire you're getting blown up or force-choked, and in the Alliance you get blown up and fall for numerous TRAPs.

Unaligned/Rebel smuggler. For some reason I think being a galactic smuggler is just awesome.

Crap accidentally voted for the rebel alliance. I've always been a fan of the Galactic Empire despite my good natured ways. I think the coolness factor of Darth Vadar has something to do with it.

Mercenary as long as I can still use a Lightsaber.

I'd be the most badass Merc ever in the Star Wars universe, all shall bow down before me with my 16(yes thats right SIXTEEN!)lightsabers, one on each finger sorta like Capt Kuro from One Piece* colored gold and 3 on each hip(3 white and 3 black),and I myself would be wearing a white suit with a white trenchcoat.

*here is Capt Kuro, notice how he has a sword on each of his fingers:http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/Kuro

I need to dissect a specific point here...

The Galactic Empire: A human-centric militaristic state governed by the Emperor and his cadre of advisors and governors. The Empire is a ruthless, expansionist government hell-bent on keeping its hold on power. However, despite its ruthlessness, it serves a function not unlike the Roman Empire in history. While the Republic credit had been a weakened currency rarely accepted outside of the Galactic Core, the Imperial Credit that replaced it was ubiquitously accepted throughout the Empire, obviously indicative of a stronger, improved economic situation under the Empire (probably stimulated by military buildup)...
I don't know if "more widely accepted" really is an indicator of "stronger economy", especially in the pseudo-terrorist Dictatorship of the Galactic Empire. Accepting a currency and being afraid to reject it for fear of having your homes and families burned (and/or planet blown up) are completely different issues. (I assume that's what you mean by "military buildup")

Now for the anti-Communism tripe: Would you be so quick to make the decision if you truly knew what it felt like to have no freedom (and don't give me that "I'm a kid, I have no freedom" bull)? Are cool guns, shiny outfits, and badass theme music really worth giving up literally everything else? Think about that for a few minutes...

Needless to say, I choose the Rebellion. Not just because they're the "good guys", or because they win in the movies (eventually). But because, like Rome, the Empire would eventually have collapsed in on itself, and I don't like waiting around for it. (political euthanasia, heh)

Well, Bounty Hunter, obviously.
Based on what I've seen in the movies, only 1 of them dies, compared to the millions of Imperials or Rebels.

Easily Galactic Empire. I like the uniforms more, and something tells me that Stormtroopers can aim a little better than as shown on the box.
Their officer uniforms are pretty awesome looking. The only downside is if you mess up you get killed by a higher ranking officer, unless you're under Thrawn who encourages creativity even if it fails. He was the smartest and more successful officer in the history of the Empire. Still, I'd have to pick being on the Empire. I'm a Human and many aliens in Star Wars freak me out. I guess it's just for me :D

Plus, I don't want to learn all their languages, sheesh. Like the Wookies growls and Jabba's talking. Just stick to the Human Galactic Basic for me, please!

PS: As for people saying the Rebels win in the movies, there's more to the storyline. The war doesn't end from Ep. 6, the extended universe goes on for a long, long time still. Including a point where Emperor Palpatine is reborn as a clone. Snap.

The Empire of course. They have the best theme music.

This is my ringtone for a few people, so yes I voted for the empire. They just look cooler overall. Plus I bet we could buy off most the people that choose merc and outnumber the rebel scum.

Empire black ops team oh yeah!

Alien scum: Echuta

Me: Ready! Aim! Fire!

Empire, specifically an Imperial Spy.

Far as I'm concerned, being a spy would be the best job, since you are less likely to die in front line duty, and there is more excitement involved, plus you get the likelihood of spending time in one area, instead of constant reassignments.

As for picking the Empire, if you were to choose between the possibility of becoming a POW with the Imperials or the Rebels, I think you're more likely to get tortured for info with the Imperial Interrogators.

You know I'm not even being remotely serious in saying that I would join the Empire solely because of the cool uniforms and/or theme songs right? But actually in Star Wars canon the galactic economy was pretty strong under Palpatine. I'm not so sure about your point about there being no freedom in the Empire, it was relatively "live and let live in regards to social policy during its reign. They'd come down on anyone who committed what they defined as treason or dissent like the wrath of God and there was certainly a cult of personality regarding the Empire and plenty of propaganda to go with it, but you're still talking about a strong, centralized government (as much as it can be on such a scale) with a strong economy. All in all, strong economy, a government that's only somewhat obtrusive provided you pay your taxes and don't break any laws isn't too bad of a deal if all it asks is to not rebel and deals with it swiftly and efficiently if such a thing occurs? I'd take that over the ineffiicient, decadent mess that the Republic became.

The sheer level of technology and the size of the galactic economy in Star Wars also provides the ability for any relatively competent government (and even those that were stunningly poor leaders could last a while, like the Republic in some periods) to stick around for a very long time. Canonically the Empire lasted well beyond the Original Trilogy and went through various systems of rule (from being ruled by Sith like Palpatine or Krayt) to a pseudo-monarchial system. The fact of the matter is that with technology that can get you from the Core Worlds to the farthest reaches of the known galaxy in less than a day, medicine that replaces nearly every system of conventional medicine in the known galaxy, and a hyper-advanced economy, very little is beyond the scope of a government ruling all those systems. It's next to impossible to destroy, even if a star goes supernova and blows up an entire system there are so many countless more worlds under its control that few things short of a galaxy wide cataclysm could cripple a government like that.

Also, knowing that the Star Wars universe is so distinctly full of all manner of horrifying alien species and fiendishly evil beings. I'd be perfectly fine giving up a couple of my own liberties for the greater good of protection from whatever horrifying things are lurking beyond the edges of known space. The New Republic won against things like the Yuuzhan Vong but only at a tremendous cost. The Empire was building things that could make short work of them, a government like the Empire would've prevented planets from being horribly ravaged by the onslaught of an alien invasion.

Imperial rule for a strong galaxy!

Rebels might have "good" intentions, but promote the kind of weakness that bought down the fall of the republic in the first place.
Keep the empire, get rid of the sith emperor perhaps, and you get the best of both worlds.

Furthermore if rebels weren't plotarmored (and imperials weren't plot nerfed), the rebellion wouldn't even have lasted long in the first place ¬¬
