Okay, I'm bored and have been on a Star Wars kick lately. If you had to be a group from any of the Original Star Wars movies, which I limited it to because I think I might make a separate poll for Old Republic era factions later.

The Galactic Empire: A human-centric militaristic state governed by the Emperor and his cadre of advisors and governors. The Empire is a ruthless, expansionist government hell-bent on keeping its hold on power. However, despite its ruthlessness, it serves a function not unlike the Roman Empire in history. While the Republic credit had been a weakened currency rarely accepted outside of the Galactic Core, the Imperial Credit that replaced it was ubiquitously accepted throughout the Empire, obviously indicative of a stronger, improved economic situation under the Empire (probably stimulated by military buildup). Though parts of the Empire run efficiently, others are not so lucky and fall under the control of corrupt, despotic, or incompetent rulers. There is also an unspoken rule that the Empire will work harder to preserve its territories and interests in the Mid Rim and Galactic Core whereas the Outer Rim, the farthest-flung outposts of Imperial authority, are not so lucky.

The Rebel Alliance: A patchwork of various dissatisfied aliens and other humans hoping to restore the Republic. The Rebel Alliance is loosely governed by both a political head of state and the head of its military. While the Alliance's navy is strong enough to defeat the Imperial Navy in battles, by sheer production capacity and firepower, they often find themselves outgunned and outmanned. The Rebellion is arguably much more likeable than the Empire given its commitment to fair treatment of all races, human or not.

Unaligned: These are individuals who choose to take no definitive stance for either side, or even to exploit the fighting between the two. The unaligned faction represents everyone from apathetic citizens not caring about who governs them to crime syndicates willing to hire themselves out to whoever will let them practice their illicit trade, many a smuggler benefits from strict Imperial controls on trade and thus has an incentive to preserve such a status quo. However, Imperial order in some cases throws a wrench in the gears of criminal operations, and inherently freedom-loving smugglers may be motivated by higher goals than credits.

Edit: In case you can't tell what faction I selected, check my avatar.

Is this a VS type thread? No threads of these kinds please.

I would either go for the Empire or Unaligned. Or maybe just move to another Universe...

I'd take the Solo route, probably a mercenary, but at some point I'd pull a Karrde and join the good guys.

Actually, the Empire primarily focused on putting down resistance, and aside from the occasional bit of censorship (only against music and films that had "fuck the empire" as their primary point) and blowing up pirates, they left well enough alone. Well, that and the slavery, although typically the people in question did something to piss the Empire off, so it was more like Jail and hard labour, something we have here. Economically, the Galaxy was very strong during the Empire's reign, with goods being less likely to be stolen by pirates for fear of Star Destroyers suddenly appearing to vaporize them.

Besides, the Rebellion was formed by a bunch of sentors when their power started to wane. The only one to survive the war then basically took over galactic governance (albeit with a republic), so I kind of consider the rebels to be like the Sons of Korhal from starcraft. Even after Endor, the Empire kept rolling, although it reformed big time, and never died, even though the Rebellion's legacy did. So yeah, I guess it's time to get fitted for an Army (Not stormtroopers, they had a regular army too) officer's uniform.

Heh, I notice that your descriptions of the factions seems pretty biased in favour of the Imperials. Though I guess that's justified given you seem to support them more than anyone.

Anyway, to be honest, I'd probably join the Rebel Alliance. However, I would try and work my way to the top and become one of the generals or captains or something, so I could really make a difference, rather than just being one of the random unnamed pilots and risk, you know, being blown up in an A-Wing... :p

Either unaligned as some kind of smuggler, most likely, or Empire. I figure that not every person involved in governing at any level would necessarily be a dick, right?

Mercenary. It's a damn GALACTIC CIVIL WAR! There'd be so many credits to be earned from working on missions, stealing information from your employer, and selling it to the enemy!

Oh God don't start the Vs. thread paranoia again. It's just a poll to ask what faction people would be if they could, geez, people are mature enough on this site to handle a question like that.

The Empire of course. They have the best theme music.

You sir, have summed up my feelings on the Empire, you win a cookie. Also, since you are evidently a snooty Englishman, you would probably be in the Empire since all the officers in the films were played by British actors because on some weird rule from a British actors' union that British actors had to have a certain number of speaking parts.

Being *that* kind of person, I said Rebel Alliance.
I mean, c'mon, they're the good guys. (Yeah, I'm a sap that way, I'm sorry). Also, they have far more interesting ships and things, they're inventive and tenatious (or however you spell it), and, AND (!) they've got Chewbacca. What's not to like?

(Oh and Han Solo, but that's a personal prefenece).

Ah, I realized that and tried to modify my poll to be less so, I just figured that's about as true as it's going to get. Yeah the Imperials are dicks but they bring stability, the Rebellion is much more committed to human rights and fair treatment of aliens than the Empire is (well, the Empire is only cool with aliens that are die-hard loyalists, just look at Thrawn). I dunno, I understand that the movies are supposed to be the classic story of good vs. evil but I just don't like to have things working that way all the time. Believe me when I say I honestly am trying to make an argument for both sides in this case, I just can't think of as much to write for the Alliance as I can for the Empire.

Im torn between The Empire and Unaligned/Mercenary. One has so many similarities wih the Imperium of Man in WH40K, the other presents so many opportunities to exploit both sides and come out on top. I just can't decide.

The Empire was relatively decentralized in some aspects (such as how the Grand Moffs were pretty much left to their own provided they didn't try to rebel themselves). And actually slavery was specifically reinstated by the Empire, though it survived in the Outer Rim during the Old Republic, during the Empire it became a state-sanctioned trade, and even though most slavery was punitive (i.e. commit a crime, get put into slavery) they still targeted those who would make ideal slaves, such as Wookiees for their strength.

And yeah canonically the Empire functioned as the Imperial Remnant following Endor, it wasn't much until the Fel Dynasty. A series of rebellions, some of which were lead by Imperial warlords, pretty much devastated what was left and made it into the Remnant. But yeah the Empire got much better after Endor, since it wasn't being ruled by people like Tarkin or Palpatine anymore and it pretty much had to drop the racism since they just didn't have enough humans to keep doing what they were doing.

One nitpick though: stormtroopers were the core of the Imperial Army, of course they had some more ragtag groups for enforcement on the Outer Rim but stormtroopers were pretty much the way they kept peace on the ground level. Some Stormtroopers were clone soldiers after the Empire restored its old cloning program (albeit with more clone templates than just Jango Fett since it became clear it was a security risk), but they also opened their ranks up to non-clones and even the occasional alien provided he or she was willing to serve and didn't mind some very unsubtle discrimination. It'd probably be not unlike an African-American serving in the U.S. military in the 40's, under the command of human officers and the only ones that really advance are the ones that prove that they can go above and beyond their human cohorts.
