Doctor Who guys!! how was that missed?!!!!
It wasn't missed, others have said it earlier in the thread. But as to this poll, I'll have to give Doctor Who the second position.

I voted Star Trek, two reasons: I want a holodeck and a food replicator. Okay three reasons, it doesn't hurt that I could use a transporter to transport to any coordinates I wanted on Earth, that is if I was living on Earth.

Doctor Who, being my favorite show of all time, at the moment, would be nice as well. It would be dangerous but fun to go on adventures through time in the TARDIS. Heck, in the last episode of Tennant's reign as The Doctor, The Doctor found out the lotto numbers in the future then went back to Donna's wedding and gave her the numbers as a wedding present.
So I would do something like that and become a millionaire.

Mass Effect hands down. The casual space travel and mingling with various alien races is what it's all about!

Yeah for Doctor Who!
However, that world might be pretty boring if you are not going around in the Tardis, I mean most people never encounter the Doctor, do they?

So I would likely go with Mass Effect.
One Word.
Asari.
;-)

But otherwise b5. I just love the alien races there.
Would be wonderfull to have a conversation with G´kar!

I was tempted to say Mass Effect, but Star Wars has always been the sci-fi universe in my heart. Mass Effect still deserves an honorary mention for being awesome and very interesting indeed.

Here is what I considered before voting for Star Trek. I ruled out series which I know little to nothing about (Babylon 5). In Battlestar Galactica there is the whole issue of the Cylons(sp?) trying to kill humans. That was out. In Star Wars the political state is constantly unstable. Quick, think of a Star Wars game or movie with a stable and just government... there isn't one? In Firefly, love it as I may, the Alliance is corrupt, non-Alliance folk are incredibly poor and live in a, mostly, archaic way and on top of that you have to deal with Reavers, so that was out, too. Mass Effect was my second choice, but the whole Reapers thing made me have some second thoughts on that one... Maybe pre-Mass Effect 1 galaxy would be fun.

Star Trek won out in the end because, while it has galactic threats, they always seem to mostly deal directly with Starfleet. The whole universe seems pretty clean and crisp. Plus, Picard is sweet.
cept for the whole "resistance is futile, you will be assimilated".
...Yeah...That little problem got taken care of in the Star Trek: Destiny book trilogy >_>

[Also went with Star Trek]

Iain M Banks Culture. Machines take care of the drudgery, humans (and other sapient lifeforms) just do what they want.

As a regular guy, Star Trek has to be far and away the best one to live in. Mankind has gotten it's act together, Earth has no poverty, there are replicators for food, holodecks, Risa... life in the Federation would be fantastic. Star Wars would be cool if you were a Jedi or something similarly awesome, same with Mass Effect, but life in those universes do have the potential to suck too. Stargate is basically here, unless you go through the gate and if you're doing that, it would be cool. Firefly would be great if you could get into the adventure, but has a huge suck potential.

Life on (the re-imagined) Battlestar Galactica would suck whoever you are, cramped and eating algae and the reward isn't exactly a utopia either. I think I'd be tempted to pick the 40k universe before that.

i chose stargate, i was going to choose mass effect but i thought it would be exactly the same as my normal life except with aliens for me to not give a rats ass about, with them being everywhere.
