I'm not an idiot here. I wouldn't be supporting the guy if he didn't do anything particularly useful, but I've lived in this district for 18 years and there have been significant changes made for the better that are his doing. As such, he's one politician I'd at least like having around. I don't know how good the next Democrat from here will be.TheSchaef said:Or so you assume. As we've established, he can look you dead in the face and tell you the sky is green.Kryzantine said:He might be a lying SOAB, but he's a lying SOAB that has done everything he can for the district he represents. The fact is, he sticks up for his constituents and doesn't fall on party-line politics.
And even if we stipulate that his prime directive is public service, we've already established that he'll go on the floor and lie through his teeth to advance his agenda. It's one thing to lie to save your own ass, but the House debates legislation that impacts the lives of 300 million people. In my opinion, if something with that kind of scope can't be achieved with honesty and decency, I don't see how it can be a moral position to begin with. I am pragmatic but I am not an ends-justify-the-means kind of guy.
And I know you in particular were not talking only about Fox News but I found the approach to his record interesting against the backdrop of this particular topic.
And as for lying to advance his agenda... well, what politician doesn't? If you want politicians getting the boot for defamation, then you shouldn't be expecting any politicians. Yeah, Weiner lies about other people, and other people lie about him. I don't see why that is such a big deal. I do not know a single member of the House that debates such legislation with honesty and decency. There hasn't been such a member, there never will be such a member. That's how Congress was first envisioned, you know. The House was supposed to be rowdy, completely indecent. Real legislative debate is supposed to happen in the Senate.
Anyway, this is horribly off-topic. It's on the verge of being a P&R thread.
